CHAPTER 7 - Cold Words

As much as he did not want to see her, he wanted to at the same time. His feet dragged him down the stairs, into the living room. His heart thumped madly in his chest and he realised he was straining to hear her voice. A voice he had not heard for at least five years. Maybe more. He felt slightly light-headed. By then, he was already in the door way.

He did not even hear when his cousin called him.

He saw her. Only her.

***

"Chhote? Tum aagaye?"

Khushi turned immediately.

He was standing right behind her, looking at her, only her. It was as if she were the only one in the room. Without knowing it, she too was unable to take her eyes off him. His hair was cropped shorter now. But he still had that air of pride about him. She observed him as he did her. It was his eyes she avoided looking in. She was afraid of what she would see there, though she did know that his expression would be unreadable like always.

Arnav Singh Raizada.

A name she had forbidden herself to think about and to say aloud, even forced herself to try forget. And yet, there was not a day she had not thought about him.

***

Her eyes were wide as she stared at him, careful never to let her eyes clash with his.

Arnav notice she had not really changed over the years. She had the same long hair that fell to her slim waist and for once she had kept them open... just as he liked them. The same coffee brown eyes that opened wide when she was surprised or shocked. The same satin smooth cheeks which blushed when she knew he was looking at her.

Khushi Kumari Gupta.

Her lips parted as suddenly their eyes met.

She had never looked so beautiful.

***

Arnav froze. A frail thing was sitting before him on the ground, hissing and huffing. He saw her try open her eyes but the lights were irritating her. Biting back the anger, he extended his hand to her to help her stand up. She did see it but got up all by herself, royally ignoring him.

Pride wounded, he fisted both hands at his sides and stared at her while she continued ignoring him and glanced at her hands before wiping them on her emerald green churidaar. She had still not even looked at him. Arnav inhaled sharply and tried to control his temper, but this girl was doing everything to keep it high.

Suddenly, she raised her head and looked straight into his eyes.

"Aapki himmat kaise hui?" (How dare you?)

Arnav was surprised for a minute. What was wrong with her?

"What? Meri himmat?" (My daring?)

"Haan, aapki! Aapki himmat kaise hui hampar gaari chalaane ki koshish karne ki?" (Yes, yours! How dare you try to run over me with your car?)

"Maine tumpar gaari chalaane ki...? Are you crazy? Dimaak kharaab hogaya kya tumhaara?" (I tried to...? [...] Have you gone mad?)

"Aur nahin to kya? Aapki gaari humein kuchalne vaali thi!" (What else were you doing? Your car was about to crush me!)

"Oh really? Tum sarak ke beech mein kya kar rahi thi? Tumhaara hai kya?" (What were you doing in the middle of the road? Belongs to you?)

"Haan hamaara hai! Aapko kya farak padta hai? Humein to laga tha ke yahan havaayi patta ban gaya hai, aap yahan apni gaari jo ura rahe the." (Ya, belongs to me! Why do you care? I thought it had become a runway by the way you were flying you car on it.)

"Excuse me?"

"Theek hai. Aap maafi maang hi rahe hain to hum aapko maaf karte hain." (Fine. I you are asking so I'll forgive you.)

"What the-? Maine kab tumse maafi maangi?" (When did I ask for forgiveness?)

"Arey. Abhi-abhi to kaha aapne: 'Excuse me'." ( You just said: 'Excuse me'.)

"Bloody hell!" Arnav thundered through gritted teeth.

***

"Aao Chhote, Khushiji se milo to." (Come and meet Khushiji, Chhote.)

Anjali was calling him with a voice that rang with excitement.

Khushi's eyes still focused on him only when he walked towards her, slowly. Arnav made sure no feeling, whatsoever, was seen on his face but he alone knew what he was going through.

Five years he had had to spend without her, and now that his life was slowly returning on the tracks and he had begun trying to forget about her, she was standing there in front of him, in his own house, looking more beautiful than ever. Standing before him, that silky red saree elegantly draped around her, in a way that it hugged all her curves.

Damn! Why did she have to look so beautiful?

Why did she have to wear red, dammit? She knew it was his favourite color, she knew that!

Then why?

Once he reached her, he gave her the coldest look he could manage, and in the coldest tone possible, he greeted her, trying to make her feel most uncomfortable.

"Hi, Khushi."

CHAPTER 8 - Uncomfortable
"Main tumse sorry nahin keh raha tha, you get that?" (I wasn't asking for forgiveness, you get that?)

"Aap... Aap apne aap ko samajhte kya?" (You... What do you think you are?)

"Jo bhi. Tumse matlab?" (Whatever. Your problem?)

Khushi opened her mouth but she had no retort. The man sneered at her and fished for some notes in his pockets.

"Yeh paise lo and get lost." (Take this money and get lost.)

Khushi was irate already. What did this guy think? He was seriously so full of himself. She'd never ever in her whole life seen someone act this way.

"Humein aapke paison ki koyi zaroorat nahin hai," she replied through gritted teeth. (I don't need your money.)

He sighed impatiently, taking out more notes.

"Chaaho to aur le lo!" (Take more if you want.)

Khushi narrowed her eyes dangerously at him. If looks could kill, he'd be dead and cold already.

"Humne kaha na, aap apne paise apne paas hi rakkhiye!" (I told you, keep your money to yourself!)

She started to walk away, fiddling with the end of her plait but paused. He could not get away so easily. He had insulted her, so he deserved the same treatment. Afterall you reap what you sow, right? She turned to him as he was opening the door of his jeep.

"Suniye!" (Listen!)

He looked at her arrogantly and snickered sarcastically.

"Iraada badal diya kya?" (Changed you mind?)

"Ji nahin. Hume bas aapse kuch kehna tha," she answered with a sickly sweet tone. "In paison pa aapko bohot ghamand hai na? Bacha ke rakkhiye, ek din chaayad aapko hi zaroorat pad jaaye." (Not at all. I just had to tell you something. You pride a lot on this money, right? Keep it well, you might need it someday.)

His expression fell immediately, bringing a triumphant smile to her face.

"Aur haan, agli baar in paison ke saath-saath saamne vaale ko sorry kehna bhi seekh lena." (And yes, nexr time learn to say sorry to the person you are giving this money in similar situations.)

With that, she chuckle and went her way, satisfied with his discomfited face.

Arnav watched her go, eyes narrowed and mouth gaping. How dare this girl speak to him like that? What exactly did she think of herself?

Whatever!

Besides they wouldn't meet again, would they? He shrugged and got into his jeep.

***

Her eyes lowered on her fidgety hands immediately and she mumbled a quick 'Namaste' back at him, feeling his eyes rove all over her. Suddenly, she saw something shine on his right hand. She focused on it and realised it was his engagement ring. Her eyes filled immediately, but she willed the tears not to fall. Just as she hoped her heart wouldn't break further, Radhika came up behind Arnav and hugged his arm with a large smile. He kept looking at her, devoid of any emotion. Perhaps this was what she deserved... This was her punishment for breaking his heart so many years ago...

***

It surprised her when he sat right across from her at the dining table. When she looked up, she was still staring at her with that weird expression.

Khushi felt uneasy. Did he always have to glare at her like that?

She looked down quickly, trying her best to ignore him.

Did she always have to look away when he wanted her to look in her eyes? Dammit!

Arnav was having some difficulty in hiding his frustration. He wanted her to look at him in the eyes at least once, but every time he managed to catch her eye, she looked away.

Dammit! Why did she have to have such an effect on him?

Khushi tried to look anywhere, except the dark tempting pools of grey in front of her. Her gaze suddenly fell on her sister's engagement ring. It was so beautiful, Khushi felt her heart break. She needed to look elsewhere. Her eyes clashed with his. And he was hardly looking at his plate. His gaze was fixed on her. Only her. He ate without really seeing what was going into his mouth.

Khushi felt her stomach lurch by the way he was looking at her.

It wasn't right... It wasn't right at all...

***

"Aaj bhi tu bahar jaa rahi hai kya?"(You are going out again today?)

"Haan, jiji!"(Yes, jiji)

"Kyun? Hamaara ghar tujhe achha nahin lagta?"(Why? Don't you like our house?)

"Jiji! Aap aisi baatein kyunkarti hain? Aapko pata hai na, hum ek jagah baithe nahin reh sakte. Hume kuchh na kuchh karna hi padta hai aur yahan ghar pe to Maasiji kuchh karne nahin deingi. Is liye hum apne din bahar ghoomkar bitate hain. Vaise kuchh ziaada rochak bhi nahin ho raha hai. Hume to bas Jijaji se milna hai!"(Jiji! You are you speaking like this? You know that I cannot stay idle. I have to be doing some work and here Maasiji won't let me do anything. That's why I go out and roam around. Anyway, you guys aren't doing something interesting enough. Ijust want to meet Jijaji!)

Payal smiled as Khushi blabbered on before hugging her to say goodbye and then rushed off. Her cousin was a bit pagli, but no one could help loving her.

Khushi spent a lovely morning walking in part of the village where she had not been before.

"Bas, ek baar voh Laad Governor hamaare raaste se door rehein!" she said aloud. She tought of the guy she had met the night before. She did not know his name, so she referred to him as 'Laad Governer'; it suited him, his anger, his arrogance... "Jaane khud ko kya samajhte hain! Humein paise dekar, hume kharidna chahate the! Unki inti himmat?"(Just don't make that Laad Governor come in front of me! Dunno who he thinks he is! He wanted to buy me with his money! How dare he?)

Just then she- her head more precisely- bumped into something hard. Khushi looked up in shock.

Laad Governor!

CHAPTER 9 - A Devil Round The Corner

Laad Governor!

Think of the devil! This one really came!

Khushi's eyes widened.

"Aap?!" (You?!)

"Tum?!" (You?!)

She quickly grabbed his head and bent it down to hit it against her again.

"What the-? Dimaak kharaab hogaya hai tumhaara?" (Have you lost it?)

"Hum nahin chaahate ke hamaari singh nikal aaye!" (I don't want a bump on my head!)

"What?"

Arnav cursed mentally. What the hell was this girl doing here again? God! Why had he even come around here?

Oh yeah! Right! Because the internet connection had been damaged and was currently under repairs, and he was getting bored at home. Dammit! If he had know this calamity would be here, he would have stayed away.

"Ek baar sar kahin patak jaaye to singh nikal aata hai. Agar dusri baar patak jaaye to nahin aata!" She rubbed her forehead frantically. (If you knock your head once, you get a bump. you don't if you knock it a second time.)

"Kya nikal aata hai?" (What do you get?)

"Singh! Matlab bump!"

He lifted an eyebrow at her and gave her his 'What the-' look.

"Don't tell me tum yeh bakwaas maanti ho." (Don't tell me you believe this nonsense.)

"Aapse koyi matlab? Humein kis baat pe vishvaas hai aur kis pe nahin, aap se kya? Aur vaise bhi, kal humein sirf shak hua tha, aaj saabit ho hi gaya!" (Your problem? I believe in something or not, how can that concern you? By the way, yesterday, I had my doubts, they're confirmed today!)

"What?"

"Aap poor eke poore andhe hain!" (You are totally blind!)

Arnav inhaled sharply. This girl was just... She always managed to get the best of his temper.

"How dare you?" he asked in a dangerously low voice.

"Kyun? Daring sirf aap kar sakte hain? Hum nahin?" (Why? Only you have the right to do the daring? Not me?)

"Yeah, yeah, whatever!"

"Kal aap humein apni gaari se kuchalna chaah-" (Yesterday you were trying to run over me with your car-)

"Gaari nahin, jeep! It's a bloody JEEP!" (Not a car, jeep!)

"Haan, haan, jobhi hai! Ussi ki family hai. Kal aap humein kuchalna chaahate the. Aaj bhi koshish ki. Problem kya hai aapki?" (Ya, ya, whatever! Same family. Yesterday you were trying to run over me. You tried again today. What's your problem?)

"Main kya karoon agar tum hamesha mere saamne aa jaati ho? Don't you dare blame me for everything, ok... tum jobhi ho..." (What do I do if you always come in front of me? [...] Whoever you are...)

Khushi gaped at him, flustered.

"Hum jobhi hain?" (Whoever I am?)

"Agar meri jeep 'gaari' aur 'jobhi hai' ho sakti hai, to tum kyun nahin?" (If my jeep can be 'car' and 'whatever', why not you?)

She narrowed her eyes while he smirked devilishly. Then he continued his way, leaving Khushi fuming. She blowed a strand of hair which had fallen in the middle of her face during her outburst. She usually didn't have such a temper, but it did go overboard with him around.

'Gusse mein achhi dikhti hai,' Arnav told himself. He stopped and shook his head. What was wrong with him? Before he knew, he had turned to look at her just in time to see her blow a lock of hair from her face. He had actually seen it slip from behind her ear and fall on her face while they were arguing and had felt the desire to put it back in its place gently, but the anger she was arousing in him had been greater than the desire. (She's beautiful when she's angry.)

As their eyes met, his breath hitched and her eyes widened. Their hearts picked up speed immediately. 'God! Could someone look more beautiful?' he thought. 'Stop it, Arnav!'

He turned back and went on, not bothering to repress his smile...

***

Arnav had left immediately after dinner, under the pretext of some urgent work. Khushi felt a bit relieved by his absence but his abrupt departure also annoyed her. Did he hate her so much?

Moments after he had gone, Padmini told her daughter to go have a walk in the gardens. The blooms would end soon with the winter approaching and it would also help both of them patch up after so many years of separation. The garden was bathed in moonlight. It looked so beautiful, just like one out of a fairy tale...

However, Khushi felt something wrong about Radhika. The latter felt too cold despite her attempts to appear nice. Suddenly her phone rang. She looked at it then at Khushi.

"Sorry, Khushi. It's a friend from London, answer karna hi padega."

She did not wait for an answer and disappeared in the far end of the garden. Khushi stayed there awkwardly. She did not want to disappoint her mother so she would have to hand out here for a moment. She let her mind wander.

But she could think of him only...

"Bass kar, Khushi," she whispered to herself. She would have ranted on, lecturing herself of the reasons why she shouldn't ever think of Arnav Singh Raizada again when she stopped cold. (Stop it, Khushi.)

Her heart.

All of a sudden, it was beating fast. Too fast...

Was he-

CHAPTER 10 - Spectrum Of Emotions

He had heard Radhika's phone ringing first. Then his fiancee had excused her herself to take the call. Khushi had not spoken a word at all but he knew she was there too. He crept behind one of the big roses bushes and observed them. He saw Radhika move to the far corner of the garden. Khushi was left alone.

She had changed. He had noticed that earlier. There was something else about her eyes. They no longer held that happiness as before. They were sad and looked wounded, deep inside. They pierced through his heart with a lot of pain. Was this change because of him? She was the one who had broken his trust. Did she deserve it?

Why the hell did he still have to feel for her, dammit?

Now, looking at her swathed in moonlight, a flimsy sari draped around her, his heart went madder than ever. Where they had come from, he didn't have the least idea, but two lines kept swimming in his mind.

<<Hai dhoop sa voh agar.

Voh chaandni raat si>>

Arnav realised tose words were meant for them. He was the dhoop; harsh, cruel and reckless at some times, calm and caring at others. She was the chaandni; always gentle and affectionate. They contrasted each other completely, and yet they would not exist without the other.

She always cared for people around her... But that had not stopped her from breaking his heart though. She had not cared the least for him, his trust, his love, his trust... Anger gripped him with full force an before he could stop himself, he was out of his hiding, standing right behind her, and heard himself bellow at her: "Vaapas kyun aayi?" (Why did you come back?)

Khushi turned, shocked by his voice, and in the process her foot turned and she stumbled. He caught her in time, one hand on her shoulder, the other on her waist, just before she fell on the rocky pathway. She looked up at him with her wide, chocolate brown eyes; eyes he had dreamt about constantly for the past five years.

His face was bathed in moonlight. She could see the day-old stubble which had formed on it. He always had one. Khushi had to admit it made him look more mature and handsome. Suddenly, she realised how close they were and tried to step back but her ankle hurt like hell. She gasped breathlessly waiting for the pain to subside. Arnav's arms tightened around her, his face etched with worry.

"Chal paaogi?" (Will you be able to walk?)

Khushi tried to make a few steps while he held her but the pain in her leg was paralyzing.

"Mujhe lagta hain sprain ho gaya hai," he whispered softly to her. (I think it's sprained.)

Khushi glanced at him briefly. The anger in his eyes had been replaced by concern for her, something she had witnessed often in the past. She closed her eyes to stop looking at him. To think of something else, anything but Arnav Singh Raizada. But then, she felt the ground leave the soles of her feet. Instinctively, her arms went round his neck as she lifted her in his arms.

Arnav noticed she was as light as she used to be, if not lesser. He took her to the nearest bench and sat her carefully before kneeling in front of her. Her eyes opened broad as she registered what he had done, what he was doing. He held her sprained ankle in his hand as gently as he could, paced in on his knee and raised her sari to her mid-calf but she stopped his hand immediately, trying to push her edge of her clothing back in place. He shot a stern glare at her. He pushed the sari up again and, trying to even his breath, he took hold of her foot to unsprain it.

Khushi closed her eyes tight as pain shot throughout her leg. She bit her lip to stifle a cry while her hand reached out to hold on to something.

"Ab dard nahin hoga," she heard him say, his voice involuntarily husky. (Now it won't hurt.)

His hands pulled her sari down, and her sandals back on. Her eyes opened to focus on him, then on his shoulder where her hand clutched at his suit. She looked at him again before releasing him. Her breath was ragged. She stood up at once and decided she had to leave as quick as possible.

Without a word she walked past him, making her way to the house, but his hand wrapped around her wrist to pull her flush against him. When she met his eyes, they were full of fury again. Khushi struggled hard to release herself.

"Chhodiye humein!" (Leave me!)

He glared at her spitefully. "Main tumse kuchh pooch raha tha, Khushi. Javaab do." His voice has dangerously calm. (I was asking you something, Khushi. Answer me.)

She paused momentarily, bit her lip then went on struggling.

"I asked you something, dammit! Answer me! Why the hell did you come back, Khushi?"

She pushed him away, finally free, but refusing to look at him. Instead she stared at the gravel at he feet. "Humein aapse koyi baat nahin karni hai!" (I don't want to talk to you.)

Arnav's anger fired up. "Khushi, look at me when I'm talking to you!"

She looked up in defiance. "Humein na to aapka chehra deknha hai, aur naa hi aapki baat sunni hai!" (I don't want to see you face, and neither do I want to hear you.)

"Khushi-"

"Aur hum aapko kissi bhi tarah ki safaayi dena zaroori nahin samajhte." (And I don't find it necessary to give you any explanation.)

With that, she ran past him, into the Raizada Mansion. Arnav stood there glaring at the empty space she had left.
