CHAPTER 21 - Realising It?

"Chhote! Chhote!"

Arnav looked at Anjali, surprised as she frowned at him.

"Kitni der se bula rahe hain! Tum kahaan kho gaye?" (I've been calling you since so long! Where were you lost?)

He shook his head. Where had he gotten lost? Was he just thinking of Khushi?

"Kahin hamaare Chhote kop yaar to nahin hogaya?" (Is it that my Chhote is in love?)

Arnav glared at his older cousin who was smiling cheekily at him. She sat down on the poolside recliner beside him.

"Pyaar? Aur main?" (Love? And me?)

No, he did not love Khushi. Maybe he was attracted to her, but could never be love. He would not let that happen. Besides, love does not even exist. Anjali giggled.

"Dekhna, ek din tumhaari zindagi mein ek ladki aayegi na, aur tumhein pata bhi nahin chalega!" (You'll see, one day a girl will come in your life, and you won't even know!)

Arnav rolled his eyes.

"Voh tumhaari zindagi ban jaayegi. Jiske bina tumhaari dhadkanein hi ruk jaayengi. Jiske bina tum ji nahin paoge." (She'll become your life. Without whom your heart will stop beating. Without whom you won't be able to live.)

He sighed in exasperation, giving Anjali an incredulous look.

"Aisa lagega jaise... agar voh tumhein na mili na... to tumhaari saasein hi ruk jaayengi." (It'll feel like... if you don't get her... your breaths will stop.)

He chuckled.

"Seriously, Di? Saasein hi ruk jaayengi?" (... My breaths will stop?)

"Chhote!"

"No, stop it, Di! Yeh sab bakwaas... I mean, look at me... Aisa lagta hain hass hass ke saasein ruk jayengi! What you said is crap, Di! I mean, kissi ke bina saansein aur dhadkan ruk jaayengi? Aap bohot ziaada filmy ho, Di!" (... All this nonesense... It's more like they'll stop if I laugh more than this!... Without someone my heartbeats and breaths will stop? You're too filmy, Di!)

"Chhote! Tum maano ya na maano, ek din dekhna, aisi hi ladki aayegi tumhaari zindagi mein!" (Believe it or not, one day you'll see, such a girl will enter your life!)

"Meri zindagi mein koyi bhi nahin aayegi! Aur mere saath aisi nonsense nahin hogi, kyunki main apni zindagi practically tarike se jeeta hoon. Aur aisi ladki aayi bhi na, to main usse door hi rahoonga." (No one will enter my life! And none of this nonsense will happen to me, 'cause I live my life practically. And if such a girl comes, I'll stay away from her.)

"Voh to tum kar hi nahin paaoge!" (You won't be able to do that!)

"Why? No wait! I don't wanna know!"

He left the poolside and went in the bathroom to have shower, Anjali's laughter following him.

***

Laughter welcomed him as he came downstairs. He went to greet his Nani and bent to touch her feet.

"Namaste, Nani."

"Jeete raho, bitwa!" (Live long, son.)

Devyani Malik caressed her grandson's cheek with affection. Then, he greeted his Mama and Mami. Manohar Mama was a man of few words. He did not speak a lot but he did have a good sense of humour. Aradhna had always said that his wife, with all her chatter had made Manohar like this and Arnav personally doubted his mother was wrong.

Manorama Mami, on the contrary, spoke a lot, too much for Arnav's liking, but she was his aunt and he could not help liking her. She cared a lot for the family and at times, she did not behave like what she seemed to be. Despite having a grown up son, she loved dressing up. It was like she had never grown old, and her husband teased her about it whenever he got the opportunity. She could say harsh things to hurt people at times, but those who knew her also knew she was good at heart. one thing that Arnav absolutely hated about her though was ' well, if he did not count her nosy nature ' that she was always trying to speak English when she never knew how to. Instead, Manorama ended up making a fool out of herself. But that certainly did not stop her...

"Hello-hi, Bye-bye Arnav bitwa! Haw aar you?" (How are you?)

Arnav half-smiled at her. "I'm fine, Mami. Nk nahin aaya?" (Hasn't NK come?)

"No, bitwa! Ooka ekjaaminasan kari ka padi! He comes latarj! Oo to baad mein aawat hai." (No, son. He has exams right now. He will come later.)

He nodded and went out in the garden. Better escape, or his aunt would cook up his ears with her silly gossip. When he reached the gazebo, where he had noticed Radhika, Gitanjali, Khushi and Ritika were sitting and talking, they had not noticed him yet.

"Hey, Arnie!"

He internally flinched at the sound of the nickname Radhika had given him. He glanced at Khushi. She was suddenly blushing furiously, and he knew at once she was remembering of what had happened in his room.

"Hey, Rad!"

His fiance had stood up, flung her arms around his waist and risen on her tiptoes to kiss his jaw. He put his hand on the small of her back, eyes still on Khushi. Anger flashed in the brown eyes and he smiled. He saw just what he wanted. First, her reaction back in his room when he had kissed her. Now the jealousy when he touched her sister. Khushi definitely had some feeling for him in there. He just needed to stir them up and wait till they came to the surface.

***

Khushi had stayed at home for two days as fever had her pinned to the bed. Several times, she had tried getting up but she felt too weak. As a person who could never stay idle, she started feeling bored. She missed walking outside in the open. Strangely enough, she found herself missing Laad Governor too. The third day she struggled out of bed, wrapped a shawl around her and got out, despite her Maasi's protests and Payal's scolding. She could not do this anymore. She could not stay in bed anymore...

***

Arnav was in an unusually foul mood. He kicked the stones on his path, trying to remove her from his mind in the same way. But he just could not do that. It had been three days almost since she had gotten hurt. Almost three days since he had last seen her. He sighed and closed his eyes, only to have her image flashing in his mind. Her laughter rang in his ears.

Dammit! Where the hell was she? He kicked the bark of the tree near which he had stopped. What the-? Why the hell was he missing her so much? Why the hell was he so worried? Everywhere he looked, he saw her! His heart beat faster at the simple thought of her. Where the hell on this earth was she?

Just as he asked himself the question, he felt someone clutch his shirt at the back and yank it...

CHAPTER 22 - Thoughts About Marriage?

Much later he sat in his room, thinking about Khushi. He had enjoyed seeing her jealous but somewhere it pinched him to hurt her like that. Arnav walked to his bedside drawer and opened the last one. He removed a photo from under a book and smiled at it.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

It was a photo of Khushi which he had nicked from the Gupta Haveli. He hid it back and went to sit on the recliner to type an email he had to sent by the night. Instead, he sat back, staring at the ceiling, unable to concentrate on something other than Khushi Kumaari Gupta.

***

"Where the f*** are you? You had told me you would come today!"

Radhika was raging but she spoke in whispers, afraid someone would hear.

"I'm so sorry, sweetheart, but you'll have to wait some more weeks. My work here is not over yet, and it might take some time."

"To hell with your work! You had promised!"

"I'm sorry, love, I really am. Please, try to understand."

"Sorry my foot! You just don't care about me!"

"I do, sweetheart, I do. It's just that my work is important too, right? Don't worry. I told you I'll come, na? Then, don't worry, I'll be there, just give me some time. Okay? Well, I have to go now. Take care, huh?"

He disconnected on her face. Radhika glared at her phone. She had thought this one person would care but no, he had also turned away. She clenched her teeth together. Well, she did not really need him either, if he did not care.

***

Arnav stood by the poolside staring into nothing. He had finally managed to type the mail and had sent it just in time. Now he was free for the remaining of the evening but he had no idea of what to do. Two arms suddenly came out of nowhere and wrapped around his torso and he felt a kiss being pressed into his shoulder. He cringed mentally as he recognised the only person who would have the guts to do that.

He turned around and Radhika grinned up at him. She hugged him tight and mumbled against his chest.

"Mom's calling you down for dinner, Arnie."

He did his best not to push her violently off him...

***

A weight was falling on him. He turned to catch it. An angel fell in his arms, unconscious. Her long dark hair was open this once and spread beautifully in his arms. Her pink lips parted slightly. Her skin was flushed and her body was on fire. Fever, he realised.

He watched with surprise initially. It took him some time before he could react. He quickly wrapped the shawl around her as it had fallen off. Then, he placed an arm behind her neck, the other under her knees, then he scooped her up in his arms. She felt very light. He gazed at her pale, beautiful face as she was unconscious in his arms. Why did it feel so right to hold her in his arms?

He looked around and saw a temple at a distance from them. He walked over there as fast as he could but did the least to disturb her. The sky above them was darkening and it looked like there would be a shower that afternoon. He couldn't leave her unprotected and feverish like that, all alone.

As he shot a glance at her, he noticed her head had lolled towards his chest. His heart gave a flutter. Carefully, he sat her on the floor of the temple, against a pillar. Once he had made sure she would not slip to the ground, he left to find her something to eat and drink. Unluckily, there was no one in the mandir or even near to it. Then he remember the halwaayi shop. He ran up till there. It was open.

Arnav returned with a gilaas (glass) of warm milk and a platterof her favourite jalebis. Another pat at her cheeks and forehead confirmed his worst fears. She had fever. He did not even bother about the fact that he was also at risk of catching it. He kept the milk and jalebis near her and rushed to fetch water which he sprinkled on her face. Relief swept over him as her eyelids moved while she tried opening her eyes.

"Khushi..." he whispered hoarsely. Her dry lips parted when she tried to breathe in. He pushed the gilaas of water gently to her mouth and made the drink some of the water, the side of her head resting against his chest. She blinked in confusion, her senses slowly coming back and her dark brown eyes met his dark grey ones...

***

"To Khushi Bitiya, aap shaadi ke baare ma ka soche hain?" (So Khushi, What have you thought about marriage?)

Khushi choked on her food at Nani's question. Ritika, who sat beside her handed her a glass of water and rubbed her back while everyone at the table stared at her. When Khushi looked up, her eyes clashed with Arnav's who, strangely, had again chosen to sit right opposite to her. He looked impassive yet.

"Ka hua, Bitiya? Aap theek to hai na?" asked Nani. (What happened? Are you alright?)

Khushi nodded. Nani tried asking her again.

"To bataaiye, Bitiya. Aap shaadi ke baare ma ka soche hain? Kaahe ki aap apan ke liye laika dhoondhe pa padi, na?" (So tell me. What have you thought about marriage? Because you should start looking for a suitable match too, right?)

Khushi was utterly shocked. What would she say?

"Naniji, shaadi?" (Naniji, marriage?)

"Haan." (Yes.)

She glanced at him. He was still staring at her intently, his cup of tea halfway to his lips.

"Naniji... voh... Hum shaadi nahin karna chahte..." (Naniji... uhh... I don't want to get married...)

"Ka?!"

Anjali laughed at Nani's baffled expression.

"Chinta mat kijiye, Nani! Shuru mein sab yahi kehte hain! Chhote ne bhi yehi kaha tha humse, par ab dekhiye! Khushiji ki bhi shaadi jald hi pakki ho jayegi. Unhein bas ek baar apne sapnon ke rajkumaar mil jaayein!" (Don't worry, Nani! Everyone says this in the beginning! Even Chhote had told me this, but now you see! Khushiji will soon get married too. Just let her fing her Prince Charming!)

At this Nani and the others smiled, but not Khushi. Instead, her eyes went to the man sitting in front of her. He gulped down his tea, without leaving her eyes once. The realisation hit her harder this time. He was the man of her dreams. He was the only one with whom she could be happy. But it was too late now, he belonged to someone else. And it was all her fault.

Khushi looked away from him or she knew she would cry. However, she did miss the amused look and half-smile he gave her...

CHAPTER 23 - Love You...

Khushi had walked for a long time and she felt the tiredness slowly creeping in. She had been feeling quite irritated too. But why? Because she had not seen him?

Stop it Khushi. Why these feelings? For a boy you don't even know properly? She had rounded the corner weakly, her eyelids heavier than ever. There was a figure just ahead of her.

Laad Governor!

Like every time she saw him, her heart went a bit mad. She staggered towards him, each step making her weaker. She only managed to grab his shirt from behind when all she could see was darkness...

***

Night had fallen. Alok and Padmini had come to fetch their daughters. The next day, Sagar would be returning to his boarding school. Khushi noticed Radhika kept glancing at the stairway. Ritika sneered.

"Humein lagta hain yeh chudail intezaar karti hi rahengi!" (I think this witch will keep waiting today!)

Khushi's eyes widened.

"Maaf kijiye. Hum jaante hain ke yeh aapki behen hai magar humein to yeh bilkul bhi achhi nahin lagti. Aapne suna voh Bhaiyya ko kya bulati hai? Arnie! Yuck! I hate her, Khushi! Jab bhi yeh yahaan aati hai, jaate vakt Bhaiyya ka intezaar karti hai. Sochti hai Bhaiyya aayenge usse milne, par voh hain ki care hi nahin karte, aur kabhi aate bhi nahin hai. Aaj bhi nahin aayenge!" (Sorry. i know she's your sister but I don't like her at all. Have you heard how she calls Bhaiyya? Arnie! Yuck! [...] Whenever she comes here, at the time she has to leave, she waits for him. She thinks he'll come to meet her, but he never cares, and never comes. He won't come today either!)

But Ritika was wrong; her brother did come. Just before, they left, Arnav hurried down the stairs and walked right to his fianc, without caring to look at Khushi. He greeted the other guptas first, before he hugged Radhika. Then only he looked at Khushi, straight in the eyes, over her sister's shoulder. The pain was obvious in those dark pools of chocolate. She heard Ritika huff in disbelief behind her and the latter moved to her sister's side.

Arnav smiled and Khushi felt her eyes pricking. Tears had begun to form there. She wanted to look away, but she could not. His eyes were like a pair of strong, dangerous magnets, attracting her, and she helplessly let herself pulled to them.

"Love you."

Khushi froze, her breath caught in her throat. He had been looking at her when he had mouthed those words or she had just imagined that? Then, he winked at her and her heart felt like stopping. What was he playing at? What did he mean? She suddenly felt scared. He was really frightening her now.

***

The face above her was blurred. She felt cool water running down her throat, but she was on fire. Everywhere was burning. Her head rested against something hard, she was sitting on the floor and an arm supported her. Khushi looked up only to lose herself in dark grey eyes. She blinked a few times to clear her vision, and she recognised her... she recognised the Laad Governor.

His brow was furrowed, worry clearly written on his face. She noticed his stubble was darker, and his breaths shallower.

"Tum theek ho?" (Are you okay?)

She nodded feebly. He pushed something in her hands.

"Yeh lo, khaa lo." (Take this, eat it.)

Her hands were trembling.he tried to see what he had given her but he, seeing her weakness, had snatched it away and started to feed her himself. The sweet taste of jalebis dipped in warm milk filled her mouth, causing a small smile to form on her lips.

"Tumhein bukhaar hai..." (You have fever...)

She swallowed a mouthful and nodded before taking another bite.

"Aur phir bhi ghar se bahar nikli..." (And yet you left your house...)

She looked at him innocently.

"Khushi, are you crazy?"

She blinked in silence.

"Khushi, you... Tum aisi haalat mein... Why the hell did you leave home, dammit? Tumhe pata bhi hai ke tum behosh hogayi thi? Main na hota to? Tumhe kuchh hojaata to? Answer me, dammit!" (... In this state, you [...] You know you had fallen unconscious? What if I were not here? What if something happened to you?...)

But Khushi kept staring at him meekly. Arnav swore under his breath and shoved a piece of jalebi in her open mouth.

"Nautanki!"

She smiled at him, making him smile too. he sighed as he continued feeding her.

"You're impossible, Khushi!"

***

"It's Rads, Khushi! Not Radhikaji!"

Khushi rolled her eyes as she walked out of her sister's room. Radhika was becoming more and more irritating. This morning itself, as soon as their parents had left with Sagar, her ranting had begun. She wanted to be called Rads.

"Rads? Yeh bhi koyi naam hua?" (Rads? Is this a name?)

Then, she remember the nickname her sister had given Arnav. Arnie. She giggled to herself. She wondered how he could be bearing with this stupidity if he hated the nickname Chhote, which his dear cousin had given him.

Maybe he loved Radhika very much...

Her heart was breaking. Pushing the painful thoughts as far as she could, Khushi started washing up the dishes. Out of the blue, the doorbell rang. She looked at her soapy hands. No time to wash or dry them. She ran to open the door, it was probably Sagar who had forgotten something. However her smile evaporated instantly on seeing the visitor.

Now, any guesses about the visitor?
