Chapter 2 – Unbelievable
After a day's rest Arnav decided to get back home, he switched on his cell phone, knowing there must be a million missed calls and messages from his family members, they would get worked up at the smallest of things, and here he hadn't contacted them for a whole day. It came as a little unsettling when he checked through his cell to find not a single call or message for him. He checked his watch to figure the time he had spent here at the hotel, more than a day! He realized. He had to get back home and see if everything was fine.
----
'Hari Prakash!' he yelled as he entered Shantivan. 'HariPrakash!!' he called again. There was no response. What the hell. Loosening his tie Arnav made his way to the kitchen for a glass of water. On his way back he spotted Khushi's parents seated at the dining table sipping a cup of tea to their pleasure, there was something very off about the sight. They were dressed rather lavishly, he noted.
'Namaste' Arnav greeted them in common courtesy.
'So you finally came' said Garima shrewdly 'be careful she's very angry'
'Where have you been?' Shashi asked not in his wheelchair anymore.
What-the-hell. Arnav thought he didn't care of Khushi was angry and he wasn't liable to answer them anyway so he walked away from the scene.
A brown shepherd came running down the stairs, circling around his feet making it hard for him to walk. 'What-the! Who got this one here! I hate dogs you all know that!' he yelled and was surprised as he didn't get a response yet again, usually all of them would come running as if all hell had broken loose. 'HariPrakash!' he yelled once again.
'Ji malik?' Hariprakash asked in a bored voice as he walked lazily towards him.
'What's this dog doing here?' he asked annoyed. HariPrakash stared at him as if he had gone mad. 'Am asking something dammit!' he yelled happy to see the tremor of fear pass through the servant's eyes.
'Yeh to hamesha se yahi raha hai' Hariprakash answered eyeing him weirdly.
'This dog!?' Arnav asked incredulously.
'Hey you!' came a voice from the stairs, Arnav looked up to spot ...couldn't possibly be..but was Khushi stepping into the hall with a death glare directed at him, sporting a pretty fuschia dress, her hair falling in waves down her shoulders', eyes glassy and enlarged by black eye liner, She looked anything but Khushi.
'What the hell happened to you?' he blurted out, shocked at her appearance.
Khushi's lips parted and Arnav knew she was dumbstruck, but hey he was the one who had the right to be shocked right now, not her.
'And what the hell is this dog doing here? and your parents what's up with them, what are they doing here?' he asked looking around.
'Unbelievable' Khushi sneered folding her arms across in indignation 'This is my house and you are here as my husband. So you bloody well get that right. And what's with you, why the hell are you yelling like that' she glared.
'What?' Arnav asked confused.
'What-What!?' Khushi asked. 'It's your family dog, why are you creating such a scene, I thought you loved him. Anyways I don't have time for your nonsense, come to my room right now! We need to talk' she spoke dangerously.
'What the-'
'tsk tsk, what's that Arnav? You have started cursing, am I rubbing off on you?' she asked.
Arnav to say the least was outraged, How dare she talk to him like that!
'Where's Di?' he demanded.
'How on earth would I know, and why do you care? I thought you hated her, Whatever Arnav! My room Now!' she yelled pointing at him and then towards their room.
'Nobody tells me what to do' Arnav retorted.
'Really? Since when?' she asked rolling her eyes.
'Always' Arnav said his jaw clenched in anger as he held her wrist firmly.
'Bloody hell' she cursed trying to let go of his hold, as he met hers piteful eyes he felt something was really off with her. Surprised at her piercing hateful gaze he left her hand.
'Don't you dare touch me like that again, God Arnav you are acting like such an ass' she yelled.
'Cut it out Khushi' Arnav snapped hating to hear her choice of words. ' I wanna meet Di'
He noticed Khushi roll her eyes in an 'i-don't-care' fashion as she grabbed his arm and pulled him along to their bedroom.
'Leave my hand Khushi!' Arnav yelled trying to free himself from her grip, but boy she was strong.
Once inside Khushi locked the door immediately. Arnav couldn't help but stare at her. What the hell had happened to her?
'Where the hell have you been!' Khushi asked angry lines etched over her face, and Arnav saw his Khushi in that one small second.
Oh so this was what it was all about, she was angry regarding him going missing. Just so Khushi! Finally this made sense! But what was with her clothes? Some silly thought of hers behind it, he was sure.
'I am talking to you mister' Khushi yelled snapping her fingers at him. 'I have been left stranded here by you to take care of everything! All the work is pending, and I have no clue of anything! Neither Shyam has been of any help nor your joke of a brother Akash, wouldn't know a damn thing anyway'.
'Enough Khushi!' Arnav chided, his sense of belonging vanishes in thin air. 'That's my family you are talking about!'
'So?' Khushi asked incredulously. 'And you bloody well not lecture me, I want all the work done in an hour, do you get that?'
'What work?' he asked.
'The Singhania file' she snapped pointing her gaze at the bed. 'Get it done' with that said she left the room.
What the Hell' Arnav thought once again. Not a single word about him going missing? not an ounce of worry? And why was everyone treating him like a piece of crap? What the hell was going on?
Di, she would be the sanest person right now. Hell she must be dead worried for him. That's why she hadn't come to him yet, she would spill the beans and Khushi's stupid plan of troubling him would be foiled.
On his way he spotted Payal trying to steady her feet as she tip-toed towards her room, she seemed drunk.
She looked up at him and bit her lip in deep thought and then jumped yelling in a high pitch.
'Mouse! Mouse! Arnav Mouse!' she squealed pointing at nothing in particular.
'Where? What the-' Arnav looked around non-chalantly.
Payal stopped at his reaction and frowned. 'guess my pranks are getting old' she murmured to herself walking away.
Arnav shook his head befuddled by Payal's behavior. He couldn't believe his eyes, Payal a simple mature girl, stood drunk playing stupid pranks on him. Things were getting too over the top for this to be a prank anymore. He took quick steps towards his Di's room, knowing she would have some answers for him. As he was about to knock, loud voices from within brought him to a standstill and made him rethink of his decision.
'Shyam are you mad? You spent all the money in buying these worthless things?'
'I thought you would like them, we could have a painting in the room' Came a meek voice belonging to his brother-in-law Shyam.
'I gave you the money to buy me some branded gifts so that I can atleast not be shame-faced infront of my friends! But you go and spent it on this stupid painting!' Anjali shreaked and Arnav flinched. He felt his head spinning, worried whether he was going mad. He was surely hallucinating.
Frustrated and confused he stepped away from the door and decided to get back to his room. He didn't think he could handle all of it anymore. He willed his mind to believe it was nothing but his mind simply playing tricks on him.
Khushi crossed paths with him, busy chatting away on her phone to someone. She stopped him placing her hand on his shoulder.
'Arnav, File! Now!' she ordered and walked away.
A million questions ran through his mind, as all logic failed him.
Once in his room Arnav focused on his conversation with the crazy man back at the Hotel.
His name was Castiel he remembered and he had promised to be an Angel. But that's where everything seemed even more crazy. Arnav shook his head to clear his mind. This entire thing was surely a setup, the entire family wanted to trouble him for being gone without a word that was it. He was sure it was Khushi's plan going by the ridiculousness of the whole situation.
Discarding all thoughts and worries Arnav went to his plants, hoping to have a relaxing time.
