He brushed his lips against her knuckles, her skin was soft like rose petals. Any other day, she would have blushed red at his gesture, stare at him wide eyed, wondering if all this were her dream, but not today.

He caressed her face, tracing the contours of her eyes, the tiny nose that was always held high in defiance, her brows always rising in surprise, and the soft cheeks, blushing at the tiniest of gestures. He move the soft flicks of hair away from her face remembering the time he had done so before. She was so beautiful.

In that moment his fingers encountered different warmth. A part of her cheek was warmer than the rest, a faint redness marking it, a gash, and a few days old, running parallel yet close to her ear.

"What the -" his blood boiled at the sight. Who, what?

His eyes flickered over the rest of her face, relieved to find no other marks, his eyes continuing its survey of her. His heart jumped a notch noticing faint hand prints on her arms.

He put his fingers against them, trying to see whether they had belonged to him. Hadn't he harmed her before in a similar way? But no, they weren't his.

Somebody was going to die a gruesome death for hurting his Khushi. His mind ran the different possibilities ticking of people, another part revising different death scenarios for the dog while his eyes continued the scan.

He flipped her over, hand prints marking the back of her neck, a superficial cut running from the base of her neck to the front, his fingers involuntarily tracing the length of the cut, his heart arrhythmic. How could have he have let his happen?

His mind answered, a simple sentence, his innards churning.

"You were busy running away to notice."

He turned her over on her back her, removing her dupatta tracing the cut along her front neck to notice the final blow to his heart.

Nails deeply set, hidden imperfectly without her dupatta, disappearing under her kurta, right near her heart. His hear wailed at the sight, his body recoiling and his mind refusing to believe.

No, not this, anything but this. Please, no.

"Khushi, please tell me what happened? Who did this to you? Please just stop this nonsense and answer me. Khushi..." his voice dying in his parched throat, eliciting no response.

With shaking hands, he called his sister's Doctor, requesting her to make it to the earliest.

"Khushi, answer me" he turned to her again, coaxing her to reply.

The words had stabbed him in the heart then and the knife twisted inside his heart again, pain engulfing his body.

He would have been lying if he had said he had not considered the other option to the marks, but his heart refused to believe. For a first, he had heard his heart. He had taken the tougher roads of the two.
