CHAPTER 25 (A). A MOMENT IN THE RAIN
Place - Outside KC
Arnav was anxious to meet his Afreen today. Yesterday, she seemed quiet upset after she spoke about her parents and Arnav wanted to make sure that she was back to normal. So, the moment the clock struck six, he had walked out of his office and drove the car towards KC. He tapped his finger on his blackberry looking at the KC gates every now and then. After few minutes, Khushi arrived and smiled at him. Arnav heaved a sigh of relief. She was smiling normally, Arnav smiled back. She sat inside the car and he started driving.
After few minutes of driving, it started raining mildly. Khushi frowned. Yeh toh bin mausam barsaat hai, she thought. She looked at Arnav who was also frowning. It seemed even he was thinking on the same lines. Soon, the drizzle turned into downpour and it was becoming tough for Arnav to see the road through the front window glass. Any effort from the window wipers to wipe off the water and clean the glass seemed to be of no use. Arnav shook his head in anger and decided to park the car before any accident happened. He parked the car, kept the front and back headlights on so that he can keep an eye on the road for any accident. Khushi turned towards him, "Gaadi kyon ruka di?" Arnav rolled his eyes. Is she blind? "You know what! Main gaadi chalaata hoon phir jab accident ho jaaye tab bolna ki you should have stopped the car, right?", Arnav spoke to her sarcastically. Khushi pouted. "Arre! Itna ghussa kyon ho rahe hain aap?" Arnav glanced at her, "Toh aur kya karoon? We are stuck in this damn bloody rain aur tum pooch rahi ho gaadi kyon roki. I hate rain dammit." He hit the steering wheel with his hand. Khushi flinched. She turned away and stared at the road. She noticed that the road seemed empty. She smiled as her brain supplied her with a mischievous idea.
Arnav heard the door close and turned towards Khushi only to notice her seat empty. He worriedly looked around but due to heavy rains he was not able to look outside. He swallowed. Where was she? He felt a tap on his window screen. He turned towards his window and noticed Khushi standing outside. She was already drenched from head to toe. He rolled down the window. "Paagal hogayi ho kya tum Khushi Kumari Gupta? Baarish mein bheeg rahi ho! Beemaar ho jaaogi. Get in Dammit!", Arnav scolded her. Khushi smiled at him, "Arre Arnavji! Pehli baat Khushi nahi Afreen! Aur doosri baat hum aisi baarish mein beemaar nahi padte. Aap bhi baahar aayiye. Kitna achcha mausam hai aur baarish bhi kitni suhaani hai. Mazaa aa raha hai. Aayiye na, Arnavji!" "What the! No way! Iss baarish mein main nahi aanewaala. You want to get wet and ill, go ahead! Not me!", Arnav shook his head. He will not get down. Khushi frowned and spoke up, "Please! Arnavji." "No way!", Arnav looked away from her pleading face before he gave in. "Theek hain! Mat aayiye par Radio toh lagaa dijiye. Humein baarish mein gaano par naachne ka bahut shauk hai.", she requested him. "What the! Sach mein you have gone mad, right!", Arnav told her and she nodded her head vigorously. "Please gaana laga dijiye, Arnavji!" Arnav rolled his eyes and put on the radio. But instead of songs, some commentary about rain and traffic started. Khushi was upset. She mumbled, "Yeh bhi bore! Aur inka radio bhi bore!" Arnav smiled at her sulking face. She looked cute, Arnav thought.
Khushi walked towards the road and started enjoying the rain. She splashed the rain water on her face. She jumped here and there. She slowly started dancing and giving some dhumkas. Arnav laughed at her dancing style but soon was drowning in her. He kept on staring at her. Slowly, he got down from the car. He closed the door softly, folded his hands against his chest and leaned against the car enjoying Khushi's free performance. The radio stopped bleating about traffic and the talks were replaced with a song. Arnav stood staring at Khushi as the song started with guitar tune.

Arnav smiled at her. She was facing away from him and totally into her dance.

Soon, the sweet notes of flute wafted into the air. He took a step towards her, hesitated and took the step back. His mind stopped his heart from doing what he wanted to do; hug her. The song was replaced by the para of the song.

Arnav remembered their first meet; his flirting and her fear. The first time he had met her, she had caught his attention and captured his heart and mind. He remembered her fear filled eyes.

Soon, tunes of flute floated in the air. Arnav noticed a truck coming towards Khushi but she was in her own world dancing in the middle of the road. He knew that the visibility in such rains was not possible and there was a good chance the truck might hit Khushi. "AFREEN!", Arnav shouted as he ran towards a confused Khushi. Khushi turned towards Arnav in confusion. Why was he calling her? Arnav came close and caught hold of her hand. He pulled her away and the next second the truck passed the place where she was standing. He pulled her and she landed on his chest. The sudden weight made him loose his balance and he fell down taking her with him. They rolled for few seconds coming to a stop at the edge of the road. He fell on the road with her on top of him.
Khushi's face was hidden in his chest due to the fall and Arnav's hand were tightly woven around her waist. She raised her eyes and stared into his eyes. Arnav stared back at her.

Arnav' hand which was on her waist slowly slid up her back. She tightly gripped his shirt with her hands which were on his shirt.

Arnav's hand slid back to her waist and gripped her tightly. She closed her eyes and tried to control her breathing.

Arnav slowly brought his face closer to her. She tightened her grip on his shirt.

Arnav was about to kiss her when the song ended and both came out of the spell. Arnav stood up feeling very awkward and gave her his hand. She ignored it and got up. She looked at him in anger. "Aapne humein kheecha kyon?" Arnav looked at her confused. What was she talking about? Then he remembered the truck incident. He gripped her shoulders tightly and pulled her close; close enough for her nose to touch his. "Tumhein akal nahi hain?", Arnav hissed. "Wahaan se truck aa rahi thi. Tumhein kuch ho jaata toh?" Khushi's eyes widened in shock. She had not noticed the truck. If Arnavji wouldn't have saved her then what would have happened.
Suddenly, Arnav hugged her tightly. He hid his face in her hair and spoke up, "Tumhein kuch ho jaata toh? Mera kya hota tumne socha hai kabhi. Main marjaata tumhare baghair Afreen. I would not have survived." Khushi heard his words and her heart started beating faster. She gulped and slowly whispered, "Arnav…" Arnav came out of his thoughts and realized what he had said. He came out of her embrace and looked here and there not knowing what to say or do. The rain stopped falling. Khushi looked at the car and remembered that they had to reach home. She slowly walked towards the car and took her seat. Arnav's eyes followed her as he realized her intentions. He decided to forget what he had said for now. He would mull over it later. He drove the car and dropped her at the regular stop and drove towards his house still in his thoughts. Khushi quietly walked off to her house.
Place - Arnav's Room at Shantivan
Arnav got out of his bathroom wearing his casual clothes. Seeing him wet, Anjali had sent him immediately to change. He sat on his recliner and closed his eyes. What had happened today? He had been attracted to many women till today but he had never lost his control till now. Then what was so special today that he lost his control? He would have kissed her if the song had not ended. Not only he would have scared her, but he also would lost her as a friend. Friend? Is she only that much to me? Then why did I react so harshly after saving her from the truck? Why I said I would die without her? Di always says that our true feeling comes out only in dangerous situations. Does that mean she is that important to me? Kya woh mere liye itne maayne rakhti hai? Has she become an important part of my life? Has she become my life? These thoughts troubled Arnav as he walked downstairs for dinner.
Anjali worriedly glanced at her Chote who barely ate anything and was lost in his own world. Kya hua humaare Chote ko? She wondered. Shyam noticed Anjali's worried face and Arnav's preoccupied face. He rolled his eyes and nudged Akash who was sitting opposite him with his leg. Akash looked at him questioningly. Shyam gave a glance to Anjali and then to Arnav. Akash nodded and nudged Arnav who was sitting beside him and opposite Anjali. Arnav gave him a glare and Akash threw a glance at their Di. Arnav turned towards his sister and noticed her worried expression. Arnav, Akash and Shyam knew that Anjali's world revolved around them and with her pregnancy and her habit of worrying over small things, all three had made a silent pact to signal each other if she looked worried. Arnav noticed her expression. His Di can worry at the dining table only due to one reason and that was when either of the three was not eating properly. He checked Shyam and Akash's plates. They were eating properly. Then why was Di worried? Then he looked at his own plate. Oh! He had not even tasted his plate. He would have slapped his forehead but refrained. Or else Di would get more worried. Akash and Shyam gave him knowing smiles and Arnav started eating making sure he cleared his whole plate even though he was not hungry. After a while, all three glanced at Anjali and she was smiling. All three gave a deep sigh.
Place - Khushi's Room at Laxminagar
Khushi tossed and turned but sleep refused to come to her. She had eaten her dinner with Buaji and she was so lost in her thoughts that after eating, she could not recollect what she had eaten. She had her Buaji worried for her but fortunately Buaji wrote it off as Office tension.
Khushi closed her eyes.
"Tumhein kuch ho jaata toh. Mera kya hota tumne socha hai kabhi. Main marjaata tumhare baghair Afreen. I would not have survived."
She woke up with a jerk as she heard Arnav's voice echo around her. His words kept on troubling her. She hid her face with her hands only to remember the almost kiss on the roadside. She opened her eyes in shock. What if he had kissed her? Khushi pressed her trembling hand to lips and shuddered. She had to not meet him. She had to avoid him. Yes, Khushi decided, Hum unse nahi milenge. She lied down again only to remember how he had saved her from goons. She got up again and started pacing in the room. Hum unse dosti tod nahi sakte. Woh humaari madad ke liye tab aaye jab koi nahi aaya. Par aaj jo hua uske baad….. Nahi! Hum itne achche dost ko nahi kho sakte. Ek aise dost ko jo humein apni zindagi ki pehli banaayi hui saree tohfe mein dede. Nahi! Hum iss Dosti nahi todenge. Phir hum kya Karen? She thought for a second. Haan! Hum aise act karenge jaise kuch hua hi nahi aaj. Aaj jo hua so hua par humein pata hai aisa phir se nahi hoga. Haan! Hum kuch nahi hua yahi samjhenge. Humaare aur Arnavji ke beech mein kuch nahi hua. She told herself and went to sleep. Finally, sleep touched her eyes.
