Chapter Three
She's beautiful.
Those were the very first words that flitted across Arnav Singh Raizada's mind as he laid his eyes on her. He couldn't believe this was the same girl whose picture he had pretended to gaze upon. She was distinctly memorable, a stunning mirage draped in red, with a few strands from her long hair flying in the slight breeze that seemed to enter the house with her. He ran his eyes over her slender form, her rosy lips, her fidgeting hands, and the flush that crept over the wide expanse of her round cheeks. And then his heart skipped a beat as she raised her eyes and looked straight at him.

She refused to meet the eyes that bored into hers, the intensity of his gaze making the back of her neck burn and her skin prickle. She clutched at the ends of her dupatta, twisting it around her fist.
Arnav Singh Raizada.
The name exuded power and wealth, and she was all too aware of it. What she couldn't understand was how this proposal had come to be. Sure, they were not exactly poor, but she was willing to bet all she owned that all their money amounted to the Raizada clan's weekly grocery shopping.
Her thoughts scattered away as she felt another wave of his heated gaze, and her eyes flew up to meet his.

She looked at him full in the face, her lips inches away from his own, her breasts heaving against his chest. He could feel himself stirring as he hardened his hold on her, and with one powerful swipe of his arm he cleared the table of all documents and other office related things. A loud noise told him that he had sent his laptop crashing to the floor, but he could care less. He would pay Aman to replace it later, much later. After more important things had been taken care of -
And then he crushed his mouth against hers.

Mama and Mami ushered them inside, where Anjali and Nani waited with golden platters heavily laden with prasad. Khushi came forward, smiling, casting nervous glances at the man who stood rooted at the foot of the grand staircase, his eyes still hovering on her.
And then she saw his features rearranging themselves.
His relaxed jaws clamped shut, and so did his eyes. He turned his face away, and she noticed how the muscles along his arm tensed as he balled his fists. Pain flickered across the magnificent face, followed by sorrow.
Then his eyes were upon her once more, and she gasped and stepped back as they flashed with blazing fury.
And then she blinked, and it was all gone.

Anjali led them to the plush sofas, set against walls adorned with tasteful tapestries and heavy curtains. He watched them conversing, the tinkering laughter of the women ringing in his ears, the nervous tension not quite escaping his notice. They were all waiting, waiting with bated breath, and the small talk was merely a necessary ritual that had to be dealt with sooner than later. But he had no patience for this.
"Di," he said quietly, urging her to get to the point.
Anjali cleared her throat, and to his utter surprise, walked past the girl in red and perched on the arm of the other sofa in which sat a pleasant looking, slightly older girl, clad in a simple blue sari.
"So Chotte," giggled Anjali. "How do you like our Payalji?"
