Arnav had been in the hospital for 5 days now. Khushi and Anjali stayed with him each and every day and every night, Aakash would pick Anjali up and take her home while Khushi stayed with Arnav. Arnav was getting better and each night, Arnav listened to Khushi talk nonstop. Before, he would have told her to shut up, but now, he wanted to just listen to her. Khushi would make Arnav talk too, it was the first time he talked so much. They talked about everything, except their parents and what had happened that caused Arnav to be in the hospital.
Anjali wanted to stay the nights with her brother, but Khushi wouldn't let her. She told her that it wasn't healthy for her to be so she should go home. At first, Anjali wouldn't listen. But when the doctor came and told her it wasn't ok, she relentlessly went home. She knew that Khushi was thinking about her and the baby, she wouldn't do anything to hurt any of the family on purpose. But Anjali couldn't help feel sadness when she would watch her Chote and Khushi watch each other, lost in each other's eyes. She was happy that her angry, stubborn brother finally found happiness and someone that was a perfect match for him, but she couldn't help missing that same thing with her husband.
Yes, he was a cheater, a liar, a kidnapper and had almost killed her brother, but they had some good times too. She remembered when he told her that her place is not at his feet, but at his heart. She remembered when he picked her up in front of the whole family and sat her on the sofa. She remembered how happy he seemed when Anjali told him that she was pregnant. She started crying for the lost dreams, the broken dreams of having a loving husband, a husband that loved her, that understood her, that took care of her, that didn't think of her as a burden. She thought she had found that perfect husband in him, but she had been wrong. The man she had called her husband had wronged so many people including her. He had hurt Arnav, Khushi, Khushi's family and her family.
No, she wasn't going to shed any tears for that cheater. She was strong, she had been gullible, nave, but not anymore. She was going to be strong for her child, for her brother, for her brother's wife and for her niece or nephew. She was going to be the stone structure for this family. She was no longer the nave little girl. It was time to grow up.
That night Anjali came home, she went straight to her room and closed the door, locking it after her.
She walked to her bed and looked at the picture of her and Shyam on their wedding day. They had been so happy, living in a web of lies. Thinking once again of all the happy times they had shared as a couple, brought tears to her again. She stood up on the bed and slowly brought down the picture slowly as her tears fell. She couldn't help cry for the lost dream, the lost future. She stepped off the bed and got a box out of her closet. She put the picture in the box slowly and went back to the closet. She took out one of his shirts and felt the soft silk. She took it off the hanger and put it in the box. She slowly limped back to the closet and got the rest of his clothes and put it in the box. She took out his drawers and emptied them into the box, throwing away all the memories. She went to put the drawers back in their place and saw boxes in pink and gold and blue and red wrapping paper. She took one box and opened it. She saw clothes in the box and then saw Shyam's name. She instantly took the clothes and put it in the box. She didn't want anything from that man.
Once she was done, she opened the door and called for Hari Prakash. She had him take the box downstairs and set it in yard. She took out the matchbox from her closet and followed HP downstairs. Once outside, she asked HP to go back inside and she stood in front of the box, not knowing if she was doing the right thing or not. She stood there, didn't know for how long, but just thinking about her married life. Would she get any happiness in this life? Her fiancee had left her at the mandap, in front of the holy fire and now her husband left her. Did she ever have him? No, he was the same as Jai. Instead of leaving her during the rituals, he took a fake oath to be by her side forever, to love her forever. She would have rather have her husband leave her than be in a marriage full of lies, betrayal and mistrust. Finally, she took a match out, lit it and jus as she was about to throw it in, when she heard a voice calling her.
"ANJALI BETIYA, Anjali, what are you doing? What is this?" Nani rushed out and took the match out of her hand.
"Nani, he berayed us all, he hurt me, Khushi, Chote. I don't want anything of his to remind me of my fake marriage. I don't want to cry for my broken marriage. I have to get rid of everything. Please let me do this."
"But, Betiya, why? Did something happen in the hospital? What made you take this decision?" her grandmother pleaded with her, wanting to know the reason behind this decision.
"Yes, Nani. Something did happen. I saw the love between Chote and Khushi. The love that was misunderstood because of him. I saw the love between them that I always wanted with my husband. I don't want to be held down because of him, Nani. I've been protected for way too long by Chote. It is now my turn to be the big sister to Chote and Khushi, to protect them from everything. I should have protected them, but instead I was thinking that Shyam was the victim. I need to grow up, Nani. This is the only way to get over it." she said as she had tears falling out of her eyes. She again got a match out and struggle to light it.
"Ok, Anjali betiya, stop crying, please. You will burn yourself." she said as she wiped her granddaughter's tears. Anjali, once calm, took the matches out and put the fire to all the memories, the memories she wanted to forget. Both granddaughter and grandmother watched everything go up in flames, the shadows dancing on their faces, smoke rising to the skies.
