Part 7
Khushi woke up with a start, not realizing what happened. Slowly everything started flooding her. Arnav apologizing to her, asking her to forgive him, finding out she's pregnant, telling Di. She looked down to see her husband sleeping with his head by her and husband by hers. He looked peaceful yet so protective of her, like he would never leave her. She felt something in her chest she had forgotten about. She suddenly felt a small urge to run her fingers through his hair.
She slowly lifted her hand and held it over her husband's head, afraid that he might turn into the fearful ASR that had killed her slowly. She then remembered what had happened yesterday and figured that what he had done couldn't have been fake. She slowly put her hand on his head and waited for something to happen. When Arnav kept on sleeping as before, she slowly began to run her fingers through the soft, short, dark brown hair. Something she had dreamed to do for a long time now.
As she ran her hand through his hair, memories started running through her head. Memories she had wanted to keep buried, to be forgotten. The pain, sadness, misery, everything she had wanted to be rid of, all of it came back. 'Why did he have to do this now? When I'm already broken. When I have lost trust in love? Because of him.' she thought to herself as tears started running down her face. Because she was crying, she didn't realize that Arnav had woken up. He felt her tears falling on his face as she kept her hand in his hair. He slowly lifted his head as to not startle her.
"Khushi..."
Khushi heard Arnav calling her and saw that he was looking at her with her hand still on his head. She quickly removed her hand and wiped her tears. How could she do this? He wasn't supposed to see her like this when he had done this to her. She had died days ago, so why did he all of a sudden change now? When it was too late? All these questions twirled in her mind.
"Khushi, please look at me.." Arnav begged her. With every second she didn't look at him, he felt knives stabbing at his heart, cutting one piece at a time away. "Khushi, I'm dying here. Please, look at me." He had tears coming down his face and he pleaded with Khushi, but she kept looking at her hands as she played with her fingers.
Khushi tried to look anywhere but Arnav. She could see him crying. It would awaken her heart even more and she didn't want that. She was afraid to feel anything anymore because of her fear of a broken heart. If it happens again, she would die this time. And not just inside.
Arnav couldn't take it anymore. He got up and sat on the bed facing his wife. He brought his hands slowly up and held her face like she was made of the most fragile, most priceless, most valuable materials.
"Khushi, I love you. I know you hate me, you have every reason to hate me. But please don't ignore me. Yell at me, hit me, beat me, call me names, but please," he begged her, tears coming down his eyes as he remembered every single thing he told her, did to her and put her through, "please don't act like I don't exist. Don't look away from me."
"All this," he said as he got up and motioned to everything with a sweep of his arm, "all this means nothing to me if you are not with me. What do I do with this when my life is gone, my breath is gone. The one thing that my heart has been beating for is gone?"
