CHAPTER-8

" I'm sorry for being late." She entered the conference room, and settled herself on the empty chair beside Maan. Everyone gasped audibly, especially the Khurana Constructions staff, who knew that no one, and absolutely no one was allowed to sit beside Maan Singh Khurana. He didn't approve of that, because he thought no one was worthy enough. Yet, Geet Handa had just entered and sat herself beside him, as if, it was second nature to her.

Maan stared at her, as she sifted through the papers, with utter concentration, without being aware of the tension in the air. He knew, that the staff expected him to blow her off for sitting beside him. But, he couldn't, and most importantly, he didn't want to. It somehow, felt right for her to be sitting beside him. It somehow felt as if she belonged there. He continued looking at her, lost in the last night they had shared together. He hated to admit, that he had spent the remaining of last night, the whole of his Tai-Chi sessions, and the whole of today's morning just thinking about it. And when Geet had been late, he had felt his heart flip with thousands of thoughts. What if she was upset? What if she didn't come today? He was almost tempted to go over to her place, and see if she was alright, when she walked into the room.

" So, what are we waiting for? Can we start the discussion?" She spoke in a business-like tone, causing all the staff to plunge into work immediately.

However, Maan couldn't collect his thoughts, and put them into the discussion going on in front of him. He thought about everything Geet had told him last night for the millionth time. Her own uncle was using her weaknesses to make fun of her, and scorn her. Well, so have you.The voice in his mind was too powerful to ignore.

He would have gone on forever, thinking and pondering about Geet, when he felt a slight vibration on the table. Looking around him, he realized that everyone was busy doing work, and he was the only one busy with his thoughts and the vibration came from a phone. He saw Geet pick up her cell from the table, stare at it for some time, and the familiar pale expression crept in again, making her lose her vibrant and energetic look. She hit the silent button, and slammed the phone on the table, and started writing again. Maan couldn't help look at the screen of her phone which was just in front of him and on the table, and he was shocked beyond words, when he saw the name.

HOME. It was home calling. It was Geet's home calling. Probably from Mumbai. He paced up and down his cabin, after the discussion, thinking only about the call. So, it was her family calling her that day too, when they were in the conference room. That's why her laughter had stopped, and she had suddenly become so serious. She had taken the call, and even left the room to talk. And he had made fun of her, taunting her on her unprofessionalism.

He sighed exasperatedly, running a hand in his hair. He sat down heavily on his chair in his cabin, and gulped down a glass of water. It was clear. Geet Handa was wounded. Just like him. Geet Handa was hurt. Maybe by someone or something, he thought. Just like him. And this thought suddenly gave him a strange sort of sensation. They were similar, they were alike in one other way, he thought, as a small smile crept on his lips.

*****

" Geet, are you okay?" Meera called out loudly. The only answer she heard were the loud noises of groaning, and throwing up.

" God, it's the third time today that she's been throwing up." Meera thought, as she waited in Geet's cabin outside, while she was in the washroom being violently sick. A look of worry crossed her face, when a tired and exhausted Geet made her way out of the washroom. She wiped her wet face on the white towel, and started breathing heavily.

She chugged down the glass of water, which Meera handed to her, and sat down heavily on the chair, holding her head in her hands, and sighing loudly.

" What happened? Why the hell are you so sick?" Meera said worriedly, leaning down over her, as Geet rested her head on the hard wooden table.

" I don't know. I burnt the chicken last night, and didn't get time to cook again, so I ate that." She said raspily, her words coming out with a great deal effort.

" Oh!!" Meera sighed in relief, and then chuckled, " Geet, are you pregnant by any chance?"

His feet stopped on an accord of their own, when he heard Meera say that. Geet was pregnant? No, Meera is just ASKING her whether she is pregnant or not. Stop reacting, Maan. Why the hell do you want to know whether she is pregnant or not?

But all the same, he couldn't walk away without hearing Geet's reply. He stood outside the door of her cabin, unseen by the girls. Just as Meera finished her question, Geet whipped her head up from the table, and slapped Meera lightly on her cheek with whatever strength she could find.

" Vomiting doesn't mean that I'm pregnant. And, how will I get pregnant? Asexually?" Meera threw back her head, and started laughing.

" No, you idiot. Don't laugh. Don't you know what you have to do to get pregnant? And I..well.. you know..I haven't ever… I mean.. you know that I'm.." Geet was suddenly overcome by a strange sense of shyness, as she tried to voice out the word, when Meera said between gulps of laughter, " Arre, pagli, I was just pulling your leg. Lekin, Geet, I didn't know this was such a touchy topic for you. I didn't know you were so desperate to lose it."

Geet glared at her, and then started laughing too. Maan loosened his hold on the wall, as he heard her answer. She wasn't pregnant, and well, she was a.. Stop it, Maan… The voice at the back of his mind growled out to him this time.

He straightened himself, and entered her cabin. He was just about to storm something about not taking care of herself to Geet, when she raised her eyes, saw him, cupped her hand around her mouth, staggered out of the chair and ran towards the washroom, closing the door behind her. Meera groaned audibly and said, " Not again!!" while Maan felt a surge of anger rise in him. It almost looked like she puked seeing ME.

The bathroom door clicked open almost about 10 minutes later." Oh my God, Meera.. I think I threw up seeing…." She stopped midway, as she realized that Maan was still standing there, and it was inevitable that the three of them knew what she was going to say. She immediately gulped down her words, and risked a glance towards him, who was fuming in rage.

" What? What did you say, Geet?" he spit out, taking a step towards her dangerously.

Geet staggered back, and tried to think of something in her defense. Meera whispered something inaudible and left the cabin, leaving Geet alone at the mercy of this monster. Meera, let me just get hold of you. Help karna toh dur ki baat, mujhe chor ke bhaag gayii.. abb main kaise bachu?

" Woh, woh main… nahin kuch nahin.. aap yahaan kuch kaam tha?" she said trying to look as nonchalant as she could manage.

Maan narrowed his eyes, trying to gauge her expressions, but then, he remembered something more important. He came closer to her desk, and spoke slowly and clearly," Geet, I noticed the call in the conference room today. I..well..I just wanted to know, I hope you had no problem after I took you out of the party last night."

Again, she felt a strange sensation in her. Maybe because, that was the last thing he had expected him to say. Geet knew, that, on any other day, she would have been horribly angry at him for even glancing at her phone. But his concern and care just bowled her over. Here he was trying to figure out whether she faced any problems, when she knew, that the only reason she left the party was because he had decided to take her out of that torture. And he was worried whether she faced any problems, irrespective of the fact, that the party was an extremely important one, and needless to mention, would cause many difficulties for him for having to leave it.

She looked up to him, only to meet his eyes, which were filled with genuine unease and concern.

" Nahin.. kuch problem nahin hua. Mumma ne kal raat ko phone kiya tha, lekin, I handled it. Thank you for doing what you did." She almost bit her tongue out. Why did she say that her mother had called last night? Was there any need to mention that?

Maan stared at her trying to think of a reply. He was so used to people around him thanking him for several different reasons. He had never bothered to reply to anyone. He had never considered it important at all. But this time, his heart ached to tell her something in answer. His mind just couldn't form the words. However, before it could try to, the phone in Geet's office rang, jerking up both of them yet again.

Geet leaned forward, and spoke into the phone. In the next minute she slammed it down, and said, " Site mein kuch problem ho gayii hain. We've to go right now."

" Tum kahin nahin jaa rahi ho." He said sternly, as she picked up her files and stood up, all set to hit the road.

" Matlab?" Geet retorted sharply.

" You're going back home. You need rest. I'll take Sasha with me. And this discussion is over." He grabbed the files from her hand, and left the cabin, leaving a bewildered Geet behind.

What nonsense!! He just cant order me around.. And why Sasha? Sasha ko kyun saath leke jaana hain? I don't care, I'm going..

She opened the door with all her might, only to lose balance, and haul herself into his arms. Maan held her waist tightly, trying to stop her from hitting the floor. She looked at him with wide eyes, as she clutched hold of his shirt, almost tearing it.

" Geet, maine tumse kahaan tha na, ke tum nahin aa rahi ho? Then why were you leaving your cabin in such a hurry?" He said, as he steadied her up against him.

" Mujhe aana hain!" She whimpered defensively, to which Maan replied," Lekin kyun?"

Kyunki Sasha jaa rahi hain. The words rang in her mind continuously, but she couldn't dare bring them on her mouth. She herself didn't know, why it mattered so much? Leaving Sasha at liberty with Maan. She looked at him, almost with pleading eyes. She wanted to go with him to the site, spend more time with him. Something in Geet had changed since last night. She wanted to stay with Maan more. He infuriated her, but still, he made her feel real. And now, the thought of the 2 hour drive to the site, Maan and Sasha drove her nuts.

Maan made her way to the coffee table, picking up the design he had left there. He nodded to her briskly, and said," I'll see you tomorrow. Don't be late."

*****

She heard the phone ring over the loud noise of the juice blender. Turning it off quickly, she rushed to pick up the call, and then groaned, " Meera, tu?"

" Ha main.. Why do you sound disappointed?" the clear voice of Meera came through the phone.

" What makes you think I'm disappointed? Tune phone kyun kiya woh bol!!" Geet said in a huff, her cheeks almost turning red in embarrassment, for being caught so sharply by Meera.

Yes, she was disappointed, because she had thought the call would be his. He would be calling to tell her what he did on the site, how it all went, whether all problems were solved or not.

" Geet, I called you to tell you, that tomorrow, you've to meet the clients at the Oberoi Hotel in the evening."

" Mamaji bhi honge kya?"

" Hmm… the fiasco you caused at the party. After that, kal toh Bhagwaan jaane woh kya karenge. Just stay away from him, okay?"

" Will do, thanks.. Waise Meera, Mk ka kya plans hain kal?" She kept her voice as normal as she could.

" Mujhe kya pata? But, he's not going to be at the dinner with you. He said, he had to be somewhere else, and so, you have to handle it on your own."

Geet replaced the receiver slowly, trying to process her thoughts. The thought of the dinner the next day already made her nauseous. And as she slowly realized, that Maan was probably not going to be with her tomorrow, a strange sort of fear engulfed her.Mamaji ne sab ke samne Dev ke baaremein kuch ulta seedha puch liya toh? Main kya jawab dungi!!

PRECAP: Something is definitely going on between them.
