Nupur was in a hurry and that was an understatement for now. Suddenly this morning, she had decided to be this super-woman that she thought she could apparently be or atleast try to be one.

One, she wanted to get ready for her office. Two, she wanted to take over the kitchen course with the help of Shilpa Sharma for the breakfast as well as all of their lunch tiffins. And, three, she wanted to arrange things for Mayank, like his clothes, wallet, watch etc which she had presumed he would need in the morning.

Mayank watched Nupur amused. She was such a riot of a woman. Here he complained to her of er carelessness and here she was - trying her bestto mnage all in one go, as if the world was relying on her for the morning to start.

Suddenly, he saw, after he had come out of bath, that Nupur had kept his white shirt and black trouser on the bed.

He looked at it and as Nupur was passing by he held her wrist and she stopped dead in her tracks. It wasn't fair on her senses that he was standing there with just a towel draped around him and the way water dripped from his face had lined it all along.

She skipped just some, innumerable, beats and looked at him nervously with hr throat going dry enough for no particular reason, but dry enough so that her gasping, "Kya?" came out arely as a whisper.

Mayank could only laugh at her reaction while assuming what se must be thinking and for him, it felt pleasant this once. But alas, he had to break the spell while he indicated the shirt kept by her on the bed.

In her haphazardly fast manner today, while keeping the shirt for him by one hand, she remembered, she had some trails of dry turmeric powder in her other hand because she was directly there from the kitchen. She must have touched the whirt shirt with her other hand.

She bit her lips and sighed. The spell was broken in a dis-appointing manner for her and Mayank chuckled at her reaction. It was like someone who had been winning the world by her every single act has been stopped in mid-track to show a tangle of events created by her. She was super-cute in making different kinds of faces, always a new one and all evidently the one to remember.

He looked at her laughing but not at all with a teasing hint in it at all today, as she had tried to search for. It was rather a sight to watch, for he looked, rather sweet to her with that soft laughter of his, needless to say a handsome one. Whatever was happening to her senses? Black magic, Huh?

Mayank was about to pick up his shirt when Nupur stopped him saying, "Mayank!!! Wet mat karo use'warna rang nahi chootega'"

Mayank just watched, whatever she did - she quickly got her hand out of his grip, thank you very much, for that was important for her own sanity and picking up the shirt, she started patting over it as if dusting it and said, "Woh main'.sorry'tumhari shirt kharab ho gayi'main daag nikal dungi'please doosri shirt le lo Mayank"

Mayank was bemused at her hesitancy. He just plainly replied, "Tumhi ne yeh shirt di thi'.tum isse wapas bhi le sakti ho'no problems, agar daag nab hi nikle toh bhi'" He was completely cool with the fact that he may now get anything and everything of her choice for him, now that she was his wife. How would it matter if she had spoilt her own gift? She was his gift! He smiled at that thought which Nupur couldn't exactly judge the reason for. Oh, she gave it up concluding, that her husband had all the wrong reasons for smiling at her always. But before she could ask about it she realized, ahh, He Remembered!!!

A smile automatically graced her lips which only made Mayank glad to have it when he said, "Waise Nupur, main yeh sab khud kar leta hoon'.mujhe dependant ona pasand nahi hai'.toh tumhe itna kuch karne ki zaroorat nahi hai'"

Nupur's smile vanished all of a sudden. This wasn't a work she was doing for him. It was a way to connect their routine for her. Anyways, she never felt that she had ever done anything special for him. Can't she do anything at all for him, whether important or unimportant? He was always around her to help her. She wanted to be something to him too!!! Though this had turned out a bad try today, but hey, it wouldn't be always that, she wanted to proimise.

Nupur, however, replied retortingly, "Haan'iss par kuch gir gaya iska matlab yeh nahi ki roz aisa hoga'.kaha naa maine sorry!"

Mayank couldn't help smiling at her answer, the way she said that sorry in anger had him in awe. He replied back, "That's fine Nupur'.par maine bhi toh kaha naa ki main dependant nahi banna chahta'"

Nupur declared and walked off, "Cupboard se doosri shirt le lo Mayank'.meri rakhhi hui shirt pehenne se tumhara wajan ghat nahi jaayega Mayank'.aur nahi tum weak aur irresponsible ho jaoge'..aur jahan tak dependant hone ki baat hai'toh agar tum mujh par thoda dependant ho bhi jaoge toh mujhe achcha lagega'" Nupur had managed all that in anger, she wasn't sure if she could have said this to Mayank in a sweet tone and he wouldn't have argued back or dismissed it all the way. Her firmness had helped.

Mayank was left back with a smile and look at her as she left. She was a sweet-heart, if he didn't know it already.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nupur was talking on the phone, in the evening after returning from her work which she was only too happy to resume back after her marriage just as she had wished. All thanks to Mayank, for handling it for her in such a way.

Mayank overheard her loud voice of happily talking to her Bauji, she sounded overwhelmed and he felt the need to have a look at excitement as well as her chirpy voice which was mixed with some longing too. He needed to have a look at her and we went ahead with his wish.

But as he entered the room, Nupur was still smiling wide but as she saw him, she did away with the tiny beads of tears that had graced her eyes to depict her mixed emotions at the moment.

She looked up at him smiling and relieved, announced to the phone, "Bauji'ek second'Mayank yahin hai'aap ussi se baat kar lijiye!...Ek second haan'"

He saw Nupur getting up from the edge of the bed and walk upto him and keeping a hand on the receiver, she whispered to him slowly and a bit confidentially,"Mayank'.Bauji hain'unse baat kar lo naa'.achche se baat karna haan'tumhe nahi pata ki wo tumse baat kar ke kitna khush hote hain'tumhe bahut pasand karte hain" then remembering that her Bauji was waiting, she quickly again added, "Aur haan thoda smile kar ke baat karoge toh awaaz mein bhi mithaas ghul jayegi'theek hai'" and passed over the phone to Mayank. She had said it all so slowly and quickly that it amazed Mayank, more than the other fact that she had requested Mayank to talk nicely to her Bauji. Hadn't he done that earlier too, talked nicely to him? Ofcourse, he would, always.

He liked him too. Whenever he saw that contented smile on Bauji's face when looking at Mayank, he was assured that his Dad must have had that smile and proud too, for him, if he were alive now, that is. As if her Bauji certified him with his smile. However, Nupur was so overwhelmed that she missed out how Mayank was looking at her smiling and amused.

Nupur was moving away smiling when she realized Mayank holding her wrist and holding her back as he talked to Bauji with much more enthusiasm than Nupur had expected he could manage. Well, she felt only happier.

He looked Nupur in the eye, while he still looked as if all his concentration was on the phone conversation, but he smudged the tiny tear at the corner of Nupur's eyes and side hugging her, he held her close to him.

Nupur was shocked for one and strangely happy for another. She waited close to him until he talked to Bauji for a few good minutes, feeling lots of emotions running through her at the moment.

She felt pride for her Bauji's and her choice for him and also at him for being so cordial to her Bauji. Feeling her much more like a part of his life now. Feeling caught up again with tears as an excuse t be close to him - damn, why does it always have to be tear, fear and stuff!!!

Feeling comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time to share his space with him, feeling much more vulnerable than Mayank could assess, what he did to her, feeling the return of those mushy feeling that Mayank had been successful in bringing to her whether far or close, in various ways. And also, still missing her Bauji, a lot!

As she stole glances at Mayank while he talked to her Bauji, Mayank looked closely again and again, if she was alright. She wondered what made hi m so considerate, her or his own mannerisms.

By the time Mayank greeted a good-bye and pressed the receiver to Nupur's ears for her to follow suit too, she was not completely sure of how to convey her complex emotions to him at present and as soon as he dis-connected the cell, he saw her in his arms, not holding him but trying to shut herself up in him, completely and in a way, it amazed Mayank a lot. Her head was thrusted in his chest and she had been resting herself on him completely.

He had waited for her to do that, not completely emotional though. But to his dismay, as he hugged her back, this time Nupur felt a sharp shiver run down her spine, much more than the earlier times he had hugged her, whatever was happening to her? She broke apart looking at him.

Mayank was perplexed at her reation. She was so much more reluctant than he must have assumed. She looked flustered completely.

She looked up in his eyes and looked down immediately, not knowing why she had done what she had done. Embarassed she was, firstly at suddenly hugging him and then moving away almost as suddenly.

Mayank looked at her, he understood her a bit, about her escaping ways. He wouldn't press on it. She was sensitive, by the looks of it.

Though Nupur had wanted their closeness in all aspects, when today she came across it, she didn't know how to handle it, though she had been the one who had initiated it. She realized she may need to understand herself too, in these aspects, along with Mayank. She wanted to be close still but yet it was difficult on her. The way he was being her strength and giving her some too, a while ago, she was left speechless when she looked in his eyes and she felt herself looking in her own heart. In all, she was as restless being close, as she was now being away.

Feeling a sudden need to say something, trying to explain, she opened her mouth and closed it again, when again she opened her mouth and saw Mayank holding her hand and ushering her to the couch where he made her sit down and himself sat down on his knees, in front of her, looking in her eyes. Nupur felt her heart hopping beats, while looking in his smiling and confident eyes. She was lost for a moment.

Never knowing she would react this way, trying to aloof herself from Mayank, she felt quilty, only a bit. She heard him talk on the topic that she had overpowered with her nervousness right now but still it was running inside her, trying to make this moment weak for her. He had said, "Nupur, tum jab chaho'apne Bauji se jaa kar mil sakti ho'unhe miss karke tumhe chupaane ki koi zaroorat nahi hai.."

She repeated his words in a question, "Kabhi bhi?"

He repeated the same, smiling in assurance, "Kabhi bhi!" and then added as an afterthought to change her mood, "Haan, par upset hue bina'aur bina do baar soche aur pooche'tum jab chahe unse milne jaa sakti ho'umm, well waise toh tum do baar sochti nahi ho generally, toh I am sure kit um aisa hi karogi!"

Nupur instead of getting annoyed at him this time, she giggled between her freshly formed tears. She was grateful at the moment, overwhelmed, thankful and her eyes spelled all that to him too.

After her giggle settled down, she took his hands in hers and said, "Thanks Mayank! Thank you so much!"

Mayank didn't say a 'welcome'. He hated formalities and even more he didn't want Nupur to go in that mode with him now.

He smiled and replied back, "Par ek problem hai'"

Nupur looked down at him confused, "Kya?"

Mayank said acting serious, "Tumhe office se chuttiyaan phir se leni hogi'yaad hai naa'ki pichli baar kitni problematic ho gayi thi chuttiyaan tumhare liye'.so iss 'Kabhi bhi..' ke liye'.terms and conditions apply"

Nupur giggled again and felt like punching him on shoulder and ended up pressing one of his fingers in her hand. She couldn't believe he was joking with her and they had for the first time shared a good humour in between them. She didn't realize when her nails had digge in his fingers and he had to yell instinctively, "Ouch! Nupur'Baap re, tum toh dangerous ho"

Nupur frowned guiltily and getting all worked up all of a sudden she said, "Sorry'sorry'.main woh'mujhe laga ki'"

Mayank asked promptly, enjoying her tensed expression in this matter and also relieved that she was out of her deep emotions, "Kya laga?"

Nupur looked down and said as if some student is accepting a mistake to some teacher, "Mujhe laga ki woh mera haath hai"

Mayank stood up laughing and asked immediately, "Why would you do that to your hand ever'.tum toh khud ke liye bhi dangerous ho Nupur" Nupur glared and he quitened only a bit, though he chuckled at her.

He later realized that she was trying to press his hands for some reason, though he didn't have now much opportunity to get back to that topic again.

He also noticed, her face glowed and it had colour to it, all the right colours that made her look as pretty as she did right now.

Mayank concluded, however, by saying, "Okay, okay'" as his laughted came to a halt and he added with much genuinity and softly, "I just meant ki jab bhi tumhe Bauji ki yaad aaye ya milne ka mann ho, toh tum zaroor jaana. You are lucky to have him " He wished he had the same opportunity with his father, whom he missed almost as much. He added, "Aur main bhi lucky hoon ki he likes me and makes me proud of myself'aur haan, tumhe request karne ki bhi zaroorat nahi hai Nupur'.main unhe bahut respect karta hoon aur tumhe unke towards kabhi bhi dis-appoint nahi karunga'okay?"

He looked down in the eys of his wife, sitting dazed and smiled when she smiled and nodded.

He went away just as casually as he had come in.

Nupur was left with a question for her this once, was she an outspoken girl or he was the reserved one, generally. What made her react opposite to him and he reacted accordingly too, because as it turned out recently, it was he who had been handling everything and her too, too well. She hadn't moved much of a muscle in all this, had she?

And also, he was soon becoming someone else for her. Someone, so important a person, that when he had walked out away from her just now, it had pained her just a bit, brought a smile to her face at same time and made her miss the moment that she had just lived with him, only a few seconds ago.

Part 28:

Dinner was over. Today Nupur was in a very happy mood since evening. What she had started feeling for Mayank suddenly was hard to explain. All she could come up, by accessing all the she could, is that she wanted to celebrate this moment with him. But how?

She declared looking at Shilpa Sharma, "Maa...chalo hum sab kulfi khane chalte hain..abhi!" and she smiled wide at her own suggestion.

Shilpa Sharma looked at Nupur and replied back, "Nahi actually Nupur, mera gala kharab hai toh kulfi...umm..." then looked at a glancing Mayank and continued, "Mayank mujhe kulfi khane nahi dega..main iski Ma nahi yeh mere papa jaisa behave karta hai...!" And made a dramatic face and laughed at the same time. Mayank glared harder, Nupur giggled and then stopped when she was imparted the same glare.

Nupur insisted, "Toh kulfi nahi toh..kuch aur..umm..Gulab Jamun khate hain...kaisi rahegi kaho..meri treat..." and smiled wide again at another of her suggestion.

Mayank didn't glare but Shilpa Sharma turned down her offer, wanting them to have a go at it alone,"Nahi...actually Nupur, mera favourite show aane wala hai aur mujhe woh bilkul miss nahi karna hai aaj...ek kaam karo tum dono jaa kar aao.." and she smiled just like Nupur at her suggestion.

Nupur looked at Mayank, doubtful that he may turn it down too but to her surprise he said, when Shilpa Sharma looked at him strictly, "Okay chalo..". Not that he needed forcing from his Ma, but he didn't want her to stay back alone too. He wasn't used to it. But she insisted on it and he didn't have much of an option.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was around 10:30 PM when Mayank and Nupur left from home. Mayank started for his bike but Nupur stopped him and said, "Mayank...hum walk karte hain na...jyada door hai kya?"

Mayank asked, "Kya?"

Nupur replied, "Kulfi ka stand aur kya?"

Mayank replied back, "Right! Nahi door nahi hai...chalo"

They took some steps in silence. Night was still in silence, only broken by the sound of the car swooping past them, not very often though. The moon was more than half a semi-circle, lighting the roads along, alongwith the street lights, in a subtle alternative shade of blue(by moon) and yellowish orange(by street lights), not very concretely contrasting but an interesting shade to walk through.

The air was cool, pleasant along with refreshing shade provided by the trees that lined up the road.

Nupur loved this silence and the pleasant weather. Seemed a lot like Mayank to her. But today she found this silence - spacious, cool, understanding, deep and lovable. Just like Mayank. He was all that now, wasn't he?

Nupur smiled and looked at Mayank. Mayank didn't know what had gotten into her today, but she was sort of behaving like a hindi film heroine today. Smiling happily just like that, being chirpy all of a sudden during dinner, more than ever, being as happy as someone who had just been to some other joyful land and back with all its traits. Her smile, he was a fan of it, today, officially. She had no idea how pretty she looked when her smile spread across her face and was put in sort of an inverted comma as her skin around it angled to complete her smile. Well he was observing it way too closely today. Moreover, it gave him a happy feeling too. But why was she so happy suddenly?

So as she smiled again and looked at him, he just had to ask, "Kya hua?"

Nupur replied back in the same tone, "Kya hua?"

Mayank asked trying not to show his eagerness, "Kuch nahi hua toh yun muskura kyun rahi ho?"

Nupur looked ahead, smiled to the road ahead and said, "Aise hi!"

Mayank looked ahead too and gave a slight raise to both his eyebrows trying to guess it but failing to do so. In the meanwhile, Nupur was increasingly shifting away from the foot path and walking almost in the middle of the road.

Mayank walked over to her in anger and held her hand and stopped her, she smiled as she looked at their hands and stopped in her tracks and mind, while Mayank declared, "Nupur...tumhari issi baat se sabse jyada problem hai mujhe...ab tumhe beech raaste mein chalne ki kya zaroorat hai?"

Nupur looked at her position, then at his worried face and laughed and said, "Oh...sorry!"

This wasn't fair, she wasn't arguing now, she had listened to him immediately. How was he now supposed to stay angry now? Her smile annoyed him this time for being in control of his emotions this time and he started walking ahead.

Nupur who's hand was still in his hand, held his hand back and raised both their hands to show it to him now, like Mayank had shown it to her the other night. Mayank turned to look at her and Nupur giggled.

Nupur had managed to tease Mayank, because he left her hand in a jiffy which he had absolutely no intention of doing at all. They started walking again.

Nupur danced a little in her mind for being able to achieve what she had for Mayank had seem almost nervous. She smiled and started following her life partner, where ever he took her.

They were walking past a 'Kulfi-stand' when Nupur called out, "Arrey Mayank...yahan toh dekho...yahin toh hai Kulfi..."

Mayank looked at her and said stubbornly, surprised at hiw own complex way of dealing with Nupur's try at him"Hum kulfi nahi khayenge!"

Nupur asked, quite surprised, "Toh?" She wondered was he angry all of a sudden, to say so?

Mayank looked in her eyes and she was convinced at his words for his eyes asked her to, "I'll make you try something else..okay?" Well it seemed less of a question though.

Nupur nodded, "Haan!"

He softened at her 'yes'. Nupur realized that he not just loved acting all smart always, but he also hated it when someone else tried to be playful with him. Typical male ego, she declared to herself and laughed at her thought. Though she handn't done much harm, had she?

Oh, yeah, she had just made him read his own book, that's it! Was he at such high tempers? She needed to know.

As he ushered her to one of the seats in Cafe Coffee Day, she smiled at him to check his mood and he smiled subtly, though not completely. He was not so aggravated, she realized.

Mayank asked her to order, she declined, "Main kya?...main toh yahan pehli baar aa rahi hoon...tumhe jo pasand ho woh order kar do...I am sure achcha hi hoga..." she added as a pacifier in the end, she didn't know why though, but she wanted him to cool down.

Mayank was a bit at odds with himself because the reason to be angry was to not be able to hold her hand. Not that he was used to holding it, but now he wanted to. Period.

He ordered a Sizzling Chocolate Brownie.

Nupur asked, "Ek hi?"

Mayank replied back, "Haan...hum...usse share karke kha lenge...do you mind?" He was skeptical for a moment and also why did she have to ask that, coz that made him realize how it was just him suddenly feeling so much need to do so many things with her.

Nupur smiled and said, "Okay" like a child, all convinced.

He looked away and then back at her, she smiled again and said, "Mayank...tum gussa ho?"

Mayank snapped off immediately, "Gussa...main...No..nahi toh..."

Nupur smiled and said, "Achcha...mujhe laga ki ho". She suppressed a smile at his shielding up his emotions, ever so strongly and he nodded in confirmation again that he wasn't angry.

It took 15 minutes for the order to arrive and in between Nupur had had a new audacity today to strike eye-locks with Mayank. Since he had avoided it in his still persistant anger, she found herself not nervous to try at it.

Whatever it was, Nupur was enjoying Mayank's reclusive eyes today. She even thought of pulling his hands in hers for a second, but then decided against it looking at the place they were in.

When the order arrived, Mayank and Nupur started over it. Nupur had just loved what Mayank had ordered, taking a bite she could just manage, "Hmm...itna tasty hai yeh Mayank!!!"

Mayank chuckled at the way she divulged at it.

Nupur looked at him surprised. She didn't know what got into her when she saw him getting back to normal, but she obstructed his spoon with hers. She was too much in a playful mood today with Mayank. He looked up at her confused. She chuckled again and took th piece of brownie, dipped in chocolate sauce and ice-cream, that he was supposed t claim as his and shoved it in her own mouth and giggled. Mayank was as much shocked as amused.

Nupur wanted him to react back, she didn't know how he reacted to things like these. She had never sen him act mischievous. He grinned and chuckled at her, at times, but that was all.

She wanted to see his reaction especially after his one showdown of anger tonite where he had been distinctly angry for a meek reason.

She was actually surprised to see such a cold response from him. What with just a shocked and amused reaction on his face. He didn't say anything at all. Nupur actually felt a little bad, would it be so hard to get to him, as in almost unimaginable.

Well, se was proved wrong, when she was taking another chunk of the brownie in her spoon and was making it reach her mouth when Mayank held her hand holding the spoon, Nupur looked up and saw a grin on his face, his anger was gone, almost completely and still holding her hand, he made it reach his mouth instead of hers and had a winning piece of it for himself and raised an eye-brow at a lost Nupur.

Nupur was way too happy. It was much better than she could have expected. She had judged that he may say with a straight face 'Nupur, I don't like all this!' or he must have said, "Nupur kya tum aise bachchon ki tarah harkatein karna band karogi?"

Well, Nupur was lost, obviously, for words to tell him a '' thanks for being less colder to her and mostly for that grin that was now gracing his face.

Mayank clicked his fingers in front of her and she came out oh her thoughts when he asked, "Kya hua Nupur...aisa lagta hai koi bhoot dekh liya hai tumne"

Nupur giggled and said, "Nahi...par tum Mayank hi ho naa?" She asked it so honestly in shock and in a matter-of-factly manner that Mayank laughed out loud and replied leaning closely and a bit seriously, "umm..Lagta koi bhoot dekh hi liya hai tumne" and laughed at her reaction.

She looked at his laughter and pinched herself to see if she was dreaming or what? Yes, she wasn't because as she pinched and blurted out an 'ouch', Mayank laughed harder.

Mayank casually, though he knew she liked it, just to bring her out of her shocked mode, asked, "Kaisa laga Nupur?"

Nupur was confused now. What was he asking about, his behavior, his holding upto her hand with possessiveness, him playing back to her or what?

She asked promptly, "Kya?"

Mayank asked in an obvious way, "Sizzling Chocolate Brownie, aur kya?"

Yeah. Right. Obviously he was talking about that. Nupur chided herself for getting distracted completely, she had almost forgotten about the brownie, for which by the way Mayank had won many brownie points for this whole change of plan of his. Her purpose was served, she just wanted to have a mini celebration for having some new gusty feelings for him prevailing over her and this had added cherry to the cake. However she just replied back, "Bahot tasty hai Mayank...Thank you!!!"

Mayank replied back concentrating on his own piece now, "Thanks returned with no thanks"

Nupur smiled. She knew that these smiles had just started in her life with him. It was a start of the season of first(s) for them.

Their first deserts together, first walk, first anger, first joke and laughter, first understanding period.

She was just waiting relaxed to see more get added to the list now.

Part 29:

Nupur walked out of the door of the shop with a bemused smile on her face. There was a slight shy hint in it because she felt close to Mayank suddenly. As if he had managed to cross some boundaries today, towards her. Not to mention the subtle, firm, slightly stiff smile on his face that intimidated her furthermore.

She was lost in thoughts until Mayank held her hand, walking beside her and made her lost for words suddenly. He had done this earlier too, this evening but now it felt strangely different, even more.

She looked at him astonished and he looked back determined, as if it were a very casual thing that he was doing and his expressions were like 'what?'

She looked away suppressed a blush by pressing her lips while he interlaced their hands comfortably in each other's.

His hold was firm but Nupur didn't know why but it felt like a touch with love and care, she analysed was it because she felt something different or what? Well whatever it was, she knew she may never forget this one.

Mayank had absolutely no idea that Nupur would suddenly turn so shy. Before it started to make him nervous too, which was beyond what he could accept as himself, he spoke up a bit rigidly, "Tum naa Nupur...kabhi seedhe dekh kar nahi chal sakti? Dekh kahin rahi ho..chal kahin rahi ho!"

He repeated the same sort of thing again. Nupur could just smile. She was glorifying in his care and concern. His stiff way of speaking looked smouldering to her.

Mayank looked at her confused and said, "Nupur yeh compliment NAHI tha"

Nupur giggled and said, "Mujhe pata hai"

Mayank raised his eyebrows and asked, "Toh?"

Nupur bit her lips and without allowing herself to think too much she blurted out, "Woh aisa sirf tab hota hai jab tum mere sath hote ho"

Mayank's raised eyebrows elevated further while he was more than amused by her statement.

Nupur just had to admit it, it was hard for her to bear that look from him. It was like she was so caught up in her own trap, with this statement of hers so she ended up unconfessing, "Me-mera matlab yeh hai...ki tum itni galtiyaan point out kar ke mujhe conscious kar dete ho...aur mera dhyaan kahin aur hi chala jaate hai..." Nupur regretted having said this too and while her sentence was trailing off, Mayank stopped in mid-track thereby stopping Nupur too, in her words and walk. And while Nupur found herself suddenly looking back at a halted Mayank, a bit looking forward to what he wanted to say and a bit dazed at his look. She was surprised by the amount by which suddenly his every glimpse was affecting her. He was, even today, as handsome as ever. But Nupur wanted to defy this fact, may be he seemed to have grown almost n times more, she supposed.

He closed in the steps between them and said with a straight face, his eyes had some emotion which Nupur didn't exactly understand or was it not? she wondered while he said, "Par tum kabhi bhi unn baton ko seriously nahi leti...careful bhi nahi banti...aur upar se uska yeh conclusion nikala hai tumne?"

Nupur knew she had complained this to him a few earlier times too and they never actually got to the root of it. As much as it was not the case today, she wanted to know his reasonings to it too, equally.

Nupur interrupted him, "Dekha..tum phir shuru ho gaye naa..." clearly accusing him with a pointed finger.

Mayank gave a give-up look and asked, "Toh tum kaise aur kab samjhogi?"

Nupur smiled meaningfully and said, "Simple! Tum dhyaan rakho aur mujhe kuch samajhne ki zaroorat hi nahi..." She was so happy to have finally managed to have said that. But she so wanted to continue her query too.

Mayank furrowed his brow in confusion and was glad for that fact that she wanted him to keep her in his control. That gave him a pride, some unsaid priviledge but nevertheless he was still concerned.

If they weren't standing right now where they were, he would have surely ended up hugging her as a promise though. But, he still knew his ropes enough, without misleading much, he asked back, "Aur jab main tumhare saath nahi rahoon toh? Main tumhare saath 24*7 toh nahi reh sakta naa?" he stated as a matter-of-factly.

Nupur asked a bit irritated, she knew this was true but why did he have to state it and besides why did they talked so much on this topic while never got to conclusions? She so wanted to know Mayank's persistant mention of 'being careful' and stuff, "Par kuch bhi aisa waisa kyun hoga Mayank? Tum hamesha aise kyun kehte rehte ho...careful raho...careless ho..dhyaan do..khayal rakho? Kyun tum hamesha.." she stopped as she saw his expressions change, his jaws stiffened and he got all serious and started off saying, "Kyunki..." then he swiftly converted his expressions in annoyance and said, "Kyunki yeh common sense ki baatein hain...jo tum hamesha use karna bhool jaati ho" his pitch a little high.

Nupur's anger flared up too, not much at his angered tone as much at him camouflaging something significant.

She equaled her expressions in anger, still a harmless one though and walking up to a low wall near the road, she crossed her hands and stood there penetrating him with her devil's glare.

Mayank didn't know if he wanted to tell her what he wanted to. But wasn't it her right too? Besides, he always treated her a bit dis-regarding, which he ought not to and didn't will either, he just ended up that way.

He walked upto her and said, "Achcha woh sab chodo...aur ghar chalo...hamein.."

Nupur cut him off meeting his gaze, "Raat ke 11:30 ho rahe hain...umm..kuch hi ghanto mein toh office jaana hoga mujhe...main soch rahi hoon ki yahin thodi der rook jaati hoon aur kal seedhe yahi se office jaungi..issi raste toh office aata hai naa...kyun? achcha idea hai naa" she said a bit sarcastic and a bit angry.

Mayank knew this pointless point of hers demanded an apology and he sort of deserved it too. He took a deep breath and holding up his temple, calming himself, he ended up saying, "Okay..sorry...thoda rude..."

Nupur cut him again and spoke loudly, "Thoda rude? Saboo ki tarah toh gussa aata hai tumhe..thoda aur rude hote naa toh logon ko heart attack ka khatra hai tumse...thoda rude?"

Mayank ended up with a soft laughter at her words. Only she could do that to him. Calm him down as easily as this, even in her anger.

Nupur was perplexed at this change of reaction. She repeated his own words to him, "Waise yeh compliment nahi tha..." a bit gritting her teeth and a bit amused but trying not to show it off.

Mayank laughed again and said, "Okay, okay...really sorry..ab chalo ghar chal kar baat karte hain..."

Nupur warned, "Par woh baat jo tum avoid kar gaye abhi kuch der pehle...meri common sense ki thesis mein...woh baat bhi batani hogi mujhe..."

Mayank was amazed, she had started to seep throught his thoughts, words and expressions to know him actually. May be it was time he shared much more with her. Mayank looked in her eyes and finally said, "Theek hai!"

Nupur started walking and said, "Ab chalo...waise Ma ko chinta hogi isliye main ghar chal rahi hoon..warna tum bhi mera gussa jaante nahi..."

Mayank smiled and followed her. She was a sweetheart, he knew. His sweetheart, he had let himself confess for the first time, and eventually ended up smiling at how he had framed that sentence for the first time ever, so-not Mayank Sharma if anyone is asked. That was odd a little still, but he let that be this time teasing his distress with a smile. It's just that she was!

Part 30:

Mayank and Nupur reached home and it was now late enough to sleep now and with heavy eyelids taking its toll on her, Nupur was fast asleep before realizing it.

She woke up with a start in the middle of the night with sweat beads lacing her forehead. She had had a dream, there was an accident. Who met an accident, she couldn't quite catch it, but she and Mayank were..distanced, yes that was the word for it...why and how, she didn't know, but she only felt it...even now...

Nupur felt some unknown sadness grip her and catching her breath, a bit restless, she woke up and sat there looking out for Mayank suddenly.

Surprisingly, Mayank was still awake, but what was strange was that he wasn't as such reading or anything; he was plainly just awake, in deep thoughts before Nupur woke up beside him. He was sitting with his eyes wide open and looking at nothing but his thoughts, memories and also about what he should tell Nupur about his Dad's accident and how much it had changed him. Would she understand why?

There he saw, in real, Nupur caught her breath and smiled.

She was overwhelmed with joy and sorrow together. Her look was strange, Mayank couldn't quite get it clearly. His expressions showed the same when she held his hand, to his surprise, and said something like, "Thank God Mayank...accident!" then heaving a sigh of relief, she continued, "Safe...ahh..." She was a bit taken aback because, even his face had looked worried to her, she thought her statement could help.

Mayank couldn't understand a word of it. Was she reading his mind, how could she suddenly refer to what he was thinking from a while and how did she get to know.

Mayank just HAD to cut her, "Ek minute Nupur, thoda aaram se bolo...aur tum kis barey mein mein baat kar rahi ho...Accident?"

Nupur repeated her words a bit transposed this time and a bit audibly and slowly, "Mayank...woh accident...Thank God sab safe hain"

Mayank repeated in his own confusion, "Sab safe?" She certainly wasn't talking about what he was thinking; his dad's accident never gave him a chance to thank God ever. He managed to cut her again when it dawn on him and he had to tear his emotions away from himself which only helped while he asked, "Ek minute Nupur, kahin tumne uss din ki tarah koi bura sapna toh nahi dekh liya naa?"

Nupur nodded and Mayank felt it convenient to not talk about what he was thinking and divert the topic by having a go at teasing her, he had long back realized, in their phone conversation before marriage, that she was quite 'tease-prone'and took things to her self-esteem, besides, he was surprise that he was able to hide his emotions so well just now while he said "Well, agar tum yeh chahti ho ki main tumhe promise karoon, tumhara haath pakad kar...toh..."while he showed to her that she was holding it tight and he held it back now and he managed a laugh reminding her of the act of hers the other day.

Wasn't he just impossible? Her worried face was soon replaced with an open-mouthed shocked one and she looked away embarrassed at his perception of her and a bit angry at his 'as-usual-conclusive' judgement for her, she spoke, "Aisi koi baat nahi hai samjhe!!!"

As he laughed at her reaction, she disengaged her hand from his with a glare.

Mayank was getting to know of her habits now. Her stuttering way of speaking with worry was gone and her mood was totally changed. Apparantly, she must be convinced by now that her 'worrying-dream' wasn't real.

He trailed off his laughter and asked genuinely and surprising her again, "Kya sapna dekha?"

She looked at him judgingly for a while and realized why her dream had got so deep into her - his ways and plays of surprising her and holding her while still being so himself and respectful towards her and being there for her in his own way; being so stubborn and flexible at the same time, rude and sweet, so manly but so soft at heart, practical and modern approaches that he had always had helped her, it was totally in his stride that she worked today which had been a far-dream for her...his odd combination of smirks and genuine smiles, his secretive eyes and the know-able truth in them..all of it...how could he manage to be so full of everything making him perfect while still managing to be so indifferent about almost everything except what's necessary and the right thing to do? To look closely, his every quality was just flanked by a little arrogance and rudeness and how did she always look at those in magnifying forms and wondered about knowing him? He was just so simply himself and always spoke what he was...

But why was she suddenly so into his admirers list so much? He was still being so 'sadu' to her and teasing her still, she informed her stupid array of thoughts!

Mayank was perplexed at no reaction from her. All she did was to look at him and smile. As much as he loved that reaction of hers, yes, for a change it was from her and not him; he also wanted to know the reason behind her hyper behavior earlier. He would get back to that look from her later though, sure he would.

He reminded her of his earlier question again by calling out, "Nupur?" while he clicked his fingers in front of her.

Nupur was back from her reverie soon enough and explained her dream to him, as vague as it had been to her. Of course, she hid the parts where she felt restless from not finding him or or when she had frantically called out his name, either for helping her ut or to find out ways to get to him, which was all vague to her. Frankly, she couldn't as much as admit those to him while that kept her feelings for him - at his stake, where he may approve or disapprove of it and she didn't know how would he react to it. Besides, she didn't even know how deep her feelings went and what to conclude of those, even for her sake let alone explaining it to someone.

So basically, she drew a tangent to her dream in words so that Mayank got the basic idea that it was a REAL dream.

Mayank realized one thing, she hated the lonely feeling and also, he meant something to her, atleast. To think deep into it, her hyper reactivity told him that it was more than 'just' something and he took all the pride in having noticed it now and giving his own feelings some leisurely treatment for once.

He finally gave her a conclusion, "Nupur...it was just a dream...tum itna hyper kyun ho gayi thi?"

Oh he had hit it! She wasn't good enough at hiding the inevitable as nicely as she had thought she could. She asked back, "Matlab?"

Mayank said matter-of-factly, "Matlab simple...dreams bahot abstract hote hain...hamari fear, imagination, wishes etc ka result hote hain usually...you should never worry about them"

Nupur couldn't believe it. He was actually giving out theoretical knowledge to her in regards to her dreams? However, it was the truth, but sometimes Mayank can be so mindblowingly surprising to her. Perhaps, it wasn't what she had guessed that he had guessed, phew!

But as she looked at him again, she saw what his words meant. May be he was right; there was no reason for her to worry and get hyper. After all everthing was fine and that's what mattered.

She heard Mayank continue his words after a long pause though, "Kyunki jab sach mein kuch bura hota hai...toh naa koi sapna aata hai...aur nahi hamein pata chalta hai...bura toh ek jhatke mein ho jaata hai"

She saw it again, his expressions fluctuate from a gripping sadness to speaking in a factual tone and she couldn't resist asking, "Mayank tum kis ki baat kar rahe ho?"

Mayank blinked and smiled and said, "Main toh aise hi keh raha tha...in general, you know"

Nupur shook her head negatively, "Nahi...I don't know"

Mayank questioned defensively, "Hmm?"

Nupur moved a little towards him and asked, "Mayank...tumhe hamesha sach bolna hota hai naa...yeh toh achchi baat hai..toh tum sach ko chupate kyun ho?"

Mayank knew what she was getting at and just looked at her as she spoke further, "Tum mujhe woh bhi batane waale the jo tumne kaha tha ke ghar par kahoge aur yeh bhi..mujhe abhi sunna hai aur sab sach...abhi abhi!"

Mayank tried another weak attempt, "Nupur itni raat ko mujhe baatein karne ki aadat nahi hai...woh sapna bhul jao aur so jao, okay?"

Nupur held his arm before he could lie down completely, "Toh ab aadat daal do Mayank, kyunki mujhe logon se jyada der tak anjaan rehne ki bhi aadat nahi hai...toh tum thodi apni aadat badlo aur main thodi apni, okay?"

Mayank pressed his lips and got up unwillingly. He then told her all about his dad's accident that always haunted him somewhere even today. It was strange he had never shared all of his feeling with anyone regarding this, not even his Mom as he wanted to remain strong for her and they hardly talked about his Dad because it did hurt them both. It was actually he who refrained himself from talking about it more than his Ma. But today, he felt a bit relieved when he had finally let his feelings out to Nupur.

No he didn't cry, rather it was Nupur who had blinked a tear or two looking at the state in which he remembered everything about the accident and the way he said it. Her mouth had gone dry and she also saw that Mayank found peace in looking away from her and talk about it than look in her eyes. She rested her head on his arm and held it with her hand. It was so sad that Mayank had to go through it all and turn out so stiff a guy that she had heard from Ma that he was not, earlier.

Mayank confessed, "Nupur, if only I could have...main unhe bacha pata..ek chance, sirf ek chance milta toh..." he stopped saying suddenly and she looked in her eyes which showed traces of tears.

Nupur looked in his eyes where she saw the little boy who missed his father still and had taken up life as a task ever since he had left Mayank and Ma alone. Life was cruel, it really was to some. Even she had lost her Mother at such an early age that she had only heard about her more than she can remember 'lived with her'.

Mayank found it strange that Nupur could relate to his words so much and then it dawned on him that she had too lost her mother. But before he talked about it, she spoke in the most serious and mature voice that he had ever heard from her, "Mayank, par ab tum unki baatein kyun nahi karte. Aisa lagta hai tum unhe bhool jaana chahte ho..aisa mat karo...isse jyada dukh hoga..."

Mayank looked at her confused suddenly, "Tum bhi toh jaanti ho...ki kaise hum apni life mein logon ki achchi, buri saari baatein aur aadatein dheere dheere accept karte hain...unse dheere dheere judte hain...aur jab hamein aur hamari life ko unki aadat pad jaati hai toh achanak se ek din hamein sab kehte hain ki hamari life mein unka utna hi part tha..." he laughed sarcastically with a tear forming in his eyes, "Ki ab woh closed chapter hain..aur phir unhe yaad kar ke sirf dukh hi hota hai...aur kuch..."

Nupur talked in without letting him complete, "Par tum unki baatein nahi karte ya unke bare mein sochne se apne aap ko rokte ho isliye tumhe jyada dukh hota hai Mayank...jinko tum itna pyar karo, unke jaane ke baad kya tum unko ek sadness ki tarah hi yaad karo ya yaad hi mat karo...aisa toh nahi hona chahiye naa...hamein toh unhe..." she seemed to be looking for the right word and spoke when she finally got it, "...cherish karna chahiye...aur hamesha yaad karna chahiye ki woh hamari life mein aaye...isliye main toh hamesha apni Ma ko yaad karti hoon Mayank..."

Mayank was very amazed at her words and the way she had modulated her way of talking today. Was she the same Nupur that he knew? She was so mature and understanding, more than even he was, he felt at the moment! Wasn't it true that he wanted to remember him and stopped it in fear of hurt, loss while he could have re-lived those moments with him atleast? Though it may hurt sometimes but less than now, he realized.

Nupur had just grown in respect in his eyes today. She knew how to live, and she so deserved to be kept happy, and he realized that it was him who had to do it for her now. He hardly made her happy as far as he knew and feeling a little guilty for his behavior with her that so many times lead her to complain he said, out of the blue for her, "Nupur, I am sorry"

Nupur was so baffled at these words from him that she moved away to look properly at him to understand what he just said and why? She wondered out loud, "Kya?"

It seemed to Mayank he had a good flow with words today when he was being completely honest with her now as he said, "I am sorry ki maine tumhare saath kabhi kabhi thoda rudely baat kiya...aur shayad tumhe kabhi kabhi disrespected bhi feel hua mere words se...par tum hamesha itne problems mein pad jaati ho aur apna khayal bhi nahi rakhti...kissi ko kuch ho jaata hai toh usse jyada uski family ko fark padta hai...unhe sabse bada setback lagta hai...kya tum sochti nahi kabhi ki tumhare carelessness ka result tumhari family par kitna bura pad sakta hai?"

Nupur got a gist of all his references and words and also understood his concern but his word 'family' nudged a question in her...was he talking about himself and Ma or still about Bauji, Gunjan and Bui?

Nupur asked promptly, "Family?"

Mayank named all of them - Bauji, Gunjan, Bui, Ma as well as himself, to her surprise when she asked, "Tum?"

Mayank answered with a straight face, "Obviously Main bhi Nupur...ussi tarah jis tarah tumhe mere accident ke sapne ne worry kar diya tha..main itna bhi gaya guzra nahi hoon Nupur..."Besides, she had no idea at all how really concerned about her he was.

Nupur just smiled very sweetly.

Now this was a great sight for Mayank after long. She expressed things in the most beautiful manner possible. Mayank couldn't help smiling back a little and said, "Ab agar sab theek hai toh kya main so sakta hoon...look at the time raat ke 3:30 ho rahe hain!"

Nupur looked at the clock and wondered about the time. Oh-My-God, it had been so long a time that she and Mayank had talked for and it didn't even feel like it, she only wanted to ask for more because for the first time he was talking his heart out to her, and she could gladly say that she had started to know him actually.

Okay so she decided to chance one more brave little attempt and without thinking much she said, "Jee bhar ke so lena...par use pehle...mujhe check karna hai ki tumhare saare senses kaam karte hain ya nahi.." and before Mayank could express his astonishment, she tickled him in his stomach so that he had to start controlling his laughter. He really wanted to know how exactly Nupur's playful mood worked now!

He tried politely, from the effect of the recent talk, "Nupur nahi!" as she smiled cheekily at him.

He tried a straight face when he said, "No" while his resolve lasted for a small time when he was having little fits of laughter from her attempts.

She was only glad and completely ignorant to his pleas, she continued when he warned, "Nupur stop NOW!"

This time when Nupur paid no heed to his words, next she saw both her hands caught by Mayank at her back while he looked at her seriously, in her eyes, with strictness. He could moderate a bit in behavior but getting childish COMPLETELY could hardly be on his list. He was THE Mayank and will always be.
