Chapter 11
On the flight…….
Badi dadi was very pleased with the turn of events. She had been watching the crumbling lives of her grandsons and granddaughter-in-laws with great pain for the past 3 years.
Each one of them had their own personal demons to deal with. Whose problem was worse, she could not say.
Maan who earlier loved Sur to death, was now behaving like her son.
Siddarth, he seemed to take it for granted that Fiza just needed physical attachment.
Jeh, he had neither physical nor emotional attachment with Nidha.
Krishna and Ramona, these two were total mysteries to Badi Daadi. Their marriage was fixed by her. She had liked Ramona the moment she had seen her. But then what had gone wrong? She had to find out.
She had purposefully asked Ramona to sit besides her in the flight.
"Ramona beta aapko patah hain na hum yeh sab kyun kar rahen hain" Badi daadi asked placing a hand on Ramona's hand.
Ramona nodded.
"Hum aap se seedhe hi pooch leten hain…..what is the matter between you and Krishna……I don't want no for an answer…..I want to know it because I have decided that I will take care of your lives even if it is the last thing I do" Badi daadi said.
Ramona looked for a long while at Daadi. Besides her and Krishna only Abhay knew their secret. She had hidden the truth in order not to bother any one else.
"Badi daadi mujhe koi problem nahin hain aapko bathaane mein……aap aur mummyji tho mera mom ki tarah hi hain na" Ramona said smiling sadly.
She glanced out of the window at the clear cloudy sky.
Her mind flew back to the campus of St.Claires, Delhi.
Flashback……..
A tall slim girl with black curly hair was hoping around in the basketball court dodging players of the opposite team. She landed the ball swiftly in the basket.
"Yipppeee" Ramona screamed as she had just scored the winning point for her team.
"Ramz, you are the best" Shreya screamed as she ran and hugged Ramona. Suddenly a ball hit Ramona's head causing her to stumble. Shreya caught her hand and steadied her.
"Ooops sorry Ramz" a sweet voice said.
A brown haired beauty was walking towards them.
"Shefali…..dekh kar nahin pekh sakthi kya" Ramona said rubbing her head.
"Sorry baba….accidental tha….waise bhi tujhe patah hain na mujhe basket ball khelna nahin aata….sorry" Shefali said with a baby face. Ramona smiled.
"Ramz look" Shreya nudged her.
A group of boys were walking into the college. They were the college rock band who had gone to an inter college concert.
"Looks like Rahul has bagged it again" Ramona said smiling.
Rahul was the lead singer of the band and a good friend of Ramona's. Ramona had a huge crush on him.
"Arrey yaar….tu usse kah kyun nahin dethi" Shreya asked .
"For the umpteenth time Shreya….mujhse nahin hoga…..I start stuttering the moment I try to tell him that I like him" Ramona said looking glum.
"Wah bhai wah…….the bindass bandi Ramona….jo professors ko bhi sunaathi hain kabhi….who ek ladke se….who bhi someone as soft spoken as Rahul……apni dil ki baath kehne se darthi hain….hello we are speaking about Rahul, not Krishna Khuranna"
Shefali who was also looking at Rahul threw a dirty look at Ramona which she didn't notice.
"Dekho….theen dhin mein Valentines Ball hain…..that is the right time….tum usse apni dil ki baath keh dhena" Shreya said. "Varna mein iss poori college ko tumhari dil ki baath batah dhoongi" she ended in a threat.
Ramona looked horrified. She knew Shreya would do what she said. Even she felt it was high time she opened up her heart. Worse that can happen is he will say no. She will feel sad for sure but that is not the end of life. Her Mr. Perfect will be someone else that means.
Valentines Ball…….
Ramona was nervously twirling her long curls. She had faced a lot of tough situations. But just now nothing seemed more tougher than telling Rahul about her feelings.
Thank fully Rahul had asked her to the ball.
Rahul was glancing Shefali dancing a little distance away with Krishna.
"Ermm Rahul" Ramona began unsurely.
"Oh I am sorry Ramz….I am such klutz ignoring such a beautiful lady….shall we dance" Rahul asked cordially.
"No, no…its not about dance….I am a klutz on the dance floor….you will embarrass yourself….I just wanted to say something" Ramona said.
Rahul gave her a go-ahead look. Ramona took a deep breath.
"Rahul I love you" she managed.
Rahul was completely taken aback.
"Ramona please I am not saying this because I don't find you attractive…..I mean you are one of the most beautiful girls around…..please don't feel offended" Rahul was talking fast not knowing what to say or what not to.
Ramona understood that Rahul had no such inclinations. She gave a sad smile.
"Rahul who is it?" she asked without preamble.
Rahul looked at Ramona to see any signs of break down or on coming tears and tantrum. But there was none. Off course there would be none. Ramona Aggarwal was not among the girls who wore their hearts on their sleeves.
"Shefali" Rahul replied.
It was Ramona's turn to look shocked.
"Sheff….but Rahul she likes" Ramona started.
"Krishna Khuranna right…..no she doesn't…..I had proposed to her yesterday and she accepted….she had already agreed to come to the ball with Krishna and didn't want to go through the embarrassment of taking her word back…..so I told her I will go with you" Rahul explained.
"Oh" Ramona said.
"I know I have hurt you Ramona….but I am just being honest" Rahul said looking sheepish.
Ramona smiled.
"Chill Rahul……I had already prepared myself for something like this…..but I am happy that you like Sheff…..I have known her for long Rahul…..she is a sweet girl and great friend" she replied.
"Pheww….you actually scared me you know…..so a dance to friendship" Rahul offered his hand.
"If you are willing to risk it" Ramona said.
They headed to the dance floor.
One and half year later……
Aggarwal House……
"Ramz I am so so so happy" Shefali screamed jumping up and down in the bed.
"I can see that" Ramona replied smiling and shaking her head.
"Soon I will be Mrs. Rahul Garewal…..my dream man will be mine" Shefali said.
"And I will be Mrs. Khuranna…..why is it that we can't keep our fathers names after marriage" Ramona said scrunching her nose cutely. Lost in a magazine Ramona didn't notice the loathing look that Shefali was giving her.
Marriage Day…….
In the garden of Aggarwal House…..
"Krishna mein kuch bhi nahin kar sakthi thi……sab kuch Ramona ka kiya karaya hain……who humesha se mera sab kuch mujhse cheenthi aayi hain…..aaj ussne mera pyaar bhi cheen liya" Shefali said through tears.
Krishna was standing in front of her looking horrified. He holds Shefali by her shoulders.
"Keh kyun nahin dethi usse…..kehdho ki tumhaare pyaar ko waapis lautadho…..you know na I can't live without you…..I love you Shefali….ek saal meine London mein tumhari yaadon mein bithaya hain….socha ki aathe hi tumhari baath Badi daadi ko batah dhoonga…lekin yaha sab kuch" Krishna stopped getting choked by emotion.
Ramona who was listening to the whole conversation was looking utterly bewildered. What was Shefali up to?
"Krishna mein kuch nahin kar sakthi……tum jaanthe ho na mujhe Ramona ke papa aur mumma ne paala hain apni beti ki tarah…..unki aankho mein Ramona meri behen hain….who nahin jaanthe Ramona ki asliyath…….who kithni badi naagin hain yeh who nahin jaanthe Krishna…..uss ne humesha mera sab kuch cheenna chaha hain…..who Rahul ko pasand karthi thi……lekin usne na kiyan jaanthe hon kyun…..kyunki who jaanthi ki agar who na karegi tho Papa Rahul ko mere liye dekhenge…..who jaanthi thi ki doosra rishtha tumhara hain….she knew everything Krishna….uss ne jaan booch kar yeh sab kiyan hain" Shefali said between her crocodile tears.
Ramona felt her feet buckle. She sat down on the garden floor.
The girl she had considered as her friend, her sister, she was ruining her life.
And Ramona was helpless. Helpless because Krishna loved Shefali and would not listen to Ramona. Helpless because everything was over now. Shefali had expertly extended telling the truth (her version of truth) to Krishna until the marriage ceremonies were over. Now she was wearing the mangalsuthra and sindoor of Krishna's name. Nothing could be changed. Two families reputations were at stake.
Even if they did not consider the reputation, Ramona knew that Krishna would never believe her.
Ramona felt a shadow fall on her. She looked up to see the sneering face of Shefali.
She looked beautiful in the bridal lehenga but just now the ugliness of her soul was shining out on her face.
"Why?" Ramona managed a whisper.
"Because you took away my father and mother from me" Shefali stated.
Ramona stood up looking indignant.
"Your fathers death was his own doing Shefali…..my Papa just did what was the right thing…..he was embezzling our money……giving money to anti-socials…..Papa had to go to police" Ramona said.
"But he didn't have to kill my dad" Shefali shot back.
"That was an accident…..Papa was trying to defend himself because your dad was trying to shoot him…..your dads shot misfired Shefali…..we have told you this truth long ago….then why?" Ramona asked.
"You didn't just take away my parents Ramona…..you took away the high status social life I could have had……my Dad had more money than your Papa……he was going to set up a different business….a bigger one…..you killed his dreams along with him……you also killed my mom….she died due to trauma….but ultimately its your family who took everything from me…..and now I take your life from you……I am married to a man who is at least ten times richer than Khurannas…..he loves me" she fingers the mangalsuthra on Ramona's neck.
"I fooled your husband that I loved……one year he was in London na…..how will he know whom I spent time with…..even if he knew he will only believe me…..he is blinded by my love and the only one who can remove that blindfold" she lingered cocking her head to a side "Me"
"You will never do it" Ramona finished…
"Exactly jaan….now lets go…..some bidaai acting to do" Shefali said pulling a shocked and shattered Ramona along.
Flashback ends…..
Badi Daadi was lost for words. Ramona had a hollow look on her face. Her tears had dried long ago.
"Where is Shefali now" Badi Daadi asked. The loathing for Shefali was evident in her voice.
"She left for Singapore with Rahul soon after marriage" Ramona said.
"And never came back in the past one and half year……brilliant girl I must say" Badi Daadi said disgustedly.
Ramona gave a sad smile. She caught Abhay's eyes . He nodded to reassure her. He knew what was happening. Badi Daadi looked at Abhay.
"He knows doesn't he?" she asked.
"Yes….he and Shreya are the only people who believe me…Krishna will never believe them….they are my friends na…...I can never tell this to my family….it will break their heart….they love Shreya a lot…….may be they won't even believe me" Ramona said a lost look on her face. "I tried telling Krishna the truth but he hates me to the very core"
Badi Daadi ran an affectionate hand on her head.
"I do believe you my child……and so does God…..he will show us a way soon" she said. Ramona smiled and hugged Badi Daadi.
The landing announcement came. An hour later the stepped out of the airport into Grand Port, one of the nine islands of Mauritius.
Two limos were standing ready to take them to Hotel Le Suffren, in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.
Le Suffren Hotel and Marina…..
They arrived at the hotel in two hours. The guys were completing the checking in formalities. The ladies were in the sitting lounge.
"Chalo guys…we are ready to move in" Shaan said after 20 minutes.
"Rukho" Badi Daadi said.
"Kya hua maa….aap teekh tho hain" Shanthi (mummyji) asked concerned.
"Mein teek hun magar tum log nahin" Badi Daadi said. Abhay and Armaan noticed the sly look in her eyes. They exchanged glances.
"Humein kya hua hain Badi Daadi…hum tho teek hain" Sur asked.
"Tum logon ne apne kapde dekhe hain…..bilkul who kya kehthe hain aaj kel ke bache" Badi Daadi stopped searching for the word.
"Behenji" Arnav said. Fiza gave him a withering look.
"Haan wahi…..behenji lag rahe hon" Badi Daadi added.
"Maa lekin bahue tho humesha saadi hi tho pehanthe hain" Shanthi said looking confused.
"Shanthi tum bhi na" Badi Daadi shook her head "Inn logon ka umar 23-22 range mein hain……50-60 nahin" she added.
"Badi Daadi aap kehna kya chahthi hon" Ramona asked. She almost knew what Badi Daadi wanted.
Badi Daadi gave a sly smile.
"Meine tum sab ke liye ek separate suitcase pack kiya hain" shows them a suitcase.
"Yeh sab kuch meine tum logon ke clarion se nikaala hain…..jeans, tops etc etc…..kuch dresses hum yaha se bhi khareed lenge….aaj se lekar iss ek mahine ke liyen tum log yahi pehnoge…..agar mujhe tum logon saadi dikhayi dhi na….tho mujhse bura koi nahin hoga" she warned.
"Lekin Badi Daadi" Nidha started.
"Kyun chothi….sharam aa rahi hain….sharmao math mein bhi tumhaare saath pehen loongi" Badi Daadi teased.
"Badi Daadi aap" Nidha looked horrified.
"Dumbo…who mazaak kar rahi hain" Fiza said smacking her younger sister.
All laughed and started moving towards their rooms.
Back in Delhi...
Khuranna Mansion...
Maan was sitting in the hall busy with video conference. Jeh was sitting with him.
"Mr.Gomez...you will get proof of the efficiency of our company from all around India...we have constructed some well known hotels and resorts...we deal with the most prestigious people in the business world" Maan explained.
"Mr.Khuranna...we were convinced of your efficiency by your intial report itself...I told you already this project is for my daughter and she will select the location and all other details...she needs to discuss with you...but unfortunately she can't travel much" Mr. Gomez said.
"That is okay Mr.Gomez...we will meet your daughter" Jeh reassured him.
"Mr.Jeh my daughter is settled in Mauritius with her husband...she is pregnant now and can't travel...so I guess you will have to go to Mauritius to meet her" Mr.Gomez said.
Jeh and Maan looked stunned for a second. They exchanged glances.
"Could you please give us a moment Mr.Gomez" Maan asked cordially
"Sure" Mr.Gomez
Maan called Krishna and Sid. He explained the situation.
"What the heck, now our wives will think that we have followed them there because we can't live without them" Krishna said looking irritated.
"But bhai this is an important project...and since all four of us are handling it...all four of us will have to meet her" Jeh stated.
"Chothe is right Baba...we can't mix family with business...anyways we won't meet most probably...hum bas dho dhin ke liye jaa rahen hain" Maan said.
"Okay then Maan bhai...we will go" Sid said.
Maan turned on the video call.
"Mr.Gomez we are ready to meet your daughter" Maan said.
"Excellent...she has already checked for accommodation for you...the nearest hotel available with a meeting arrangement is Le Suffren...shall I book that?" Mr.Gomez asked.
"Sure Mr.Gomez...we will inform you our arrival time...it will be after two days" Jeh said with a smile.
"A chauffeur will be there to receive you" Mr.Gomez added "Meet you at Mauritius then" he cut the call.
"I hope those four aren't there anywhere near us" Krishna said.
They had absolutely no idea what they were in for.
