"Let's forget for five minutes that you are my boss okay?" Emily said barging into Maan's cabin. Maan who was reading a file stopped mid paper turn and looked up. Before he could formulate a response Emily fired.
"I don't know what you were thinking out there and sprouted a theory out in open in front of a witness and a possible suspect now without validating statements given by other witnesses. You, of all people should know that we don't take witness statements by face value and produce it in front of another witness and end up accusing them. You have managed to botch up the chance of even collecting evidence against Geet because as we are here trying to piece things together, she might be destroying every piece of information that would incriminate her or even make us point finger in her direction." Emily breathed heavily.
Satya and Deshmukh came in at the same time Emily started her rant and Satya stared at Emily.
"Why are you glaring at me? Did I say anything wrong?" Emily demanded Satya. Satya sighed and shook his head.
"Emily is right. I apologize to all of you for prematurely sharing a theory with the witness," Maan said standing up. Satya and Deshmukh looked embarrassed.
"Apology accepted," Emily said and nodded at Maan. The dynamics between the two was something neither Satya nor Deshmukh could ever comprehend.
"Deshmukh went to Varun's gallery and picked out the evidence that he was being blackmailed with. Varun was telling the truth and so was Vikram." Emily said.
"You checked out the material?" Maan asked. Deshmukh and Emily nodded.
"Your theory which I think you are brewing for quite some time now is dead on." Emily replied.
"I went through the statements that we had taken from Geet's colleagues. One of her colleagues mentions," Satya said shuffling through the stack of papers and finally pulling out one, "- mentions that the conference call which made Geet stay back at work was her idea in the first place. She gave the impression to us that she was against it but it was she who decided on the date of that conference. Isn't that premeditated?" Deshmukh asked.
"Deshmukh, she would be doing planning of this sort all the time given her position in the company and the project they are executing. And if I put her on trial, she is going to say exactly the same thing." Maan replied. Deshmukh nodded.
"We may have found Mal's private blog." Emily said after few moments of silence.
"It's not exactly a blog. It's a private journal which is accessed via encrypted URL. The website is more exclusive than what Sasha was using, given how much it took the best of my IT engineer two days to figure that out and I will not be reporting how he finally managed to get a break through," Emily said looking pointedly at Maan. Maan merely shrugged and Satya sniggered.
"Mal deleted internet bookmarks every time she closed the browsers hoping that no one could see what she was up to. People think that deleting bookmarks would mean that they have cleaned up all their sins but in reality that isn't the case. They can still be recovered from the hard drive. Anyway we finally had a break through this afternoon and my team was kind enough to give me print out of the journal. Emily said.
"Did she write about hiring detective agency?" Satya asked. Emily didn't answer but merely sighed.
"Are you okay?" Satya asked looking at her. Emily rubbed her eyes and nodded.
"If I hadn't retrieved the journal's encrypted URL from her laptop, then I would have never believed that the journal actually belonged to Mal. First of all the entries are sporadic and not as detailed as she wrote in her diary. I agree that growing up makes people more profound and they start sifting through necessary and absolutely necessary information to document but in Mal's case it was almost the reverse. She writes about her jealousy when it came to Sasha and anger when it came to Anjali and how Geet has been a pillar of strength whenever she was tested by life. But the clarity in thought process is completely missing which was so evident in her diaries." Emily finished.
"What are you saying?" Maan asked.
"I can say that only one of the materials belongs to Mal -either diary or journal." Emily said throwing the stack of papers on the table.
"Which one do you think is Geet's?" Maan said. Satya looked from Emily to Maan and then back to Emily.
"I have read diaries only once and I have spent less than two hours going through the journal so I don't think I can..." "Your best guess Emily," Maan interrupted.
"I think the diaries are Geet's." Emily said.
"But you said that the handwriting matched Mal's," Deshmukh asked.
"Mal did write it. But the words aren't hers. There are two distinct behaviors in the two set of personal entries. In the diaries, the person writing is controlled and has a specific goal in mind - to get rid of the stalker. All possible avenues to deal with the problem are explored and reasoning simulation is performed on all action plans. The diaries reflect intelligence and emotional aloofness that is required for someone to carry out what Geet and Mal did in their teens and later years." Emily said.
"And then you have journal where the entries show that the person who is writing is troubled and harbors extreme emotional sensitivity towards Sasha and Anjali. Also, the person who is writing the journal is incredibly guilty of something. The guilt crops up every now and then. I mapped the timelines between the journal entries which were heavily laden with guilt versus Sasha's blog entries and a pattern emerged. Every time Sasha lost to Mal, Mal felt guilty about 'stealing' it away from Sasha. She mentions about an 'unfair advantage' that she had had over Sasha."
"Is she talking about the inside scoop she could have received from detective agency?" Maan asked.
"It is possible. But when she was on losing side, she rants about Sasha. The days leading up to Sasha's murder followed similar pattern. On the day before Sasha was murdered, Mal wrote - 'It is time to make that change'. The line could mean anything but if we see Mal as a suspect, then it's a clear statement from her," Emily said. Maan nodded. He knew that whatever was there in journal couldn't probably hold a case in court. The case would fall apart even before it made to the front porch of the court house.
"Did she blame Sasha for losing the baby?" Satya asked.
"She did. She doesn't mention reason for it but she does say that Geet and Varun were great sources of strength to her during the times when something 'important' from her was taken away. It is the most important reason why her jealousy towards Sasha turned to the one of pure hatred; loss of her child." Emily said.
"Was there any entry referring to Anjali's murder?" Maan asked.
"There wasn't an entry for that day but two days before the murder Mal did write. She wrote - 'I am going to put an end to this pain we feel'. It seems like she was talking about Geet and herself. But as usual the line is vague." Emily sighed.
"There is something else sir ji. In one of the diary, there is something which Emily and I almost missed last night. Today I remembered that oddity and re-read with clear head. Let me open that page for you," Satya said opening one of the books to the marked page. "Here it is," he pointed at the line he wanted Maan to read.
"I allow my parents to bake in guilt about how the nave daughter lost her thumping heart to a foreign boy during a particularly hot mid-summer afternoon. I laugh at the naivety of my mother covering the back of my hand on my mouth as she grumbles about dealing with a depressed girl" Maan read it out aloud.
"This is Geet and she is talking about Dev." Maan said.
"Yes sir ji." Satya replied.
"Isn't it possible that Geet also made entries to the same diary as Mal?" Deshmukh asked.
"No. All the entries are from Mal's perspective and it is consistent with what has happened. In that page Mal is telling how she plans to ditch the boy who stares at her when she is coming home from school after picking dinner for her mother. And suddenly this paragraph comes in," Satya explained. Maan shrugged.
"It is proof enough for me to believe that Geet knows more than she is willing to admit but it isn't enough," Emily shrugged. Everyone seemed to be lost in thoughts for several minutes.
"If Mal's motives are jealousy and vengeance, then what are Geet's motives?" Satya asked.
"Why will she have any motives? Or rather why should she have any motives?" Maan asked. Everyone looked at him and waited for him to continue. He started pacing and collected his thoughts.
"Mal probably went to Geet for help when she had the stalker. Geet planned out everything for her and Mal took notes and followed instructions to the last letter. Once the stalker incident was dealt with Sasha came into their lives. Mal and Sasha probably competed from the beginning. So Geet suggests Mal to hire the detective agency again and use them. There is a point of undoing in Mal and Sasha's relationship where existential complexity arises - it's either me or you kind of scenario. They may have competed for same things for several years and Mal is exhausted of this and also there is this thing about losing her baby which she believes is a fault of Sasha. She cannot fight anymore nor can she give up her career and losing the baby is the last straw. She goes to Geet for help and Geet gives her a plan. Mal executes it and no one ever suspects her. Why will they? Sasha is a druggie anyway so her death would be seen as a case of overdose. Almost at the same time Anjali enters their lives and the five of them are caught in a web of deception, lies and cheating. Mal realizes that she and Geet are being played and tells Geet about it. She has photos to prove that Anjali is sleeping with Vikram and Varun. Mal wants eliminate Anjali and Geet prepares a plan. She creates perfect alibis for herself and probably for Mal too. But Geet calls Mal at the time of Anjali's murder risking the whole plan. I don't know why she would do something like that especially when she risked a lot for Mal in the first place. But then again Anjali wasn't supposed to be stabbed in this operation. So Mal would drug Anjali and the morning after the murder, Geet would locate Anjali in her room and call in doctor. The doctor would declare her dead and call the police. The autopsy would show that she died of drug overdose so they might not have investigated any further. But Anjali's body was mutilated and that threw off Geet from her game. Sasha's murder became a murder case because of the vase otherwise that would have been a drug overdose case too." Maan finished. Everyone was lost in their thoughts trying to absorb what Maan had just said.
"You know I kind of agree with Geet. It's a fascinating story to hear and we don't have even an ounce of evidence to prove it to be real," Emily said softly. Though everyone agreed with her no one verbalized their frustration.
Geet could be the mastermind behind the killings but she might not even be charged with anything due to lack of evidence.
Mal could be the killer of Sasha and Anjali but there was no evidence to prove her so.
"Sir, I showed the photo of the man who went to Geet's college last year to Varun and Vikram before they left the police station. Varun said that the face seemed familiar but he wasn't able to remember who. So I went to his gallery and talked to few people who work there. They said that the man could be the artist who worked for Varun couple of years ago. He was one of the artists who helped Varun paint." Deshmukh said.
"What do they mean when they say 'could be the artist'?" Satya asked.
"They said that he was skinnier back when he worked there so they weren't very sure." Deshmukh explained.
"Where is he now?" Maan asked.
"He disappeared from the map sir. My team is searching for his whereabouts and making enquiries in all establishments related to art. Till now, we haven't had any luck. Do you think he is our second killer?" Deshmukh asked.
"It's a possibility," Maan said. Deshmukh's phone rang at the same moment.
"What!" Deshmukh shouted on the phone. "Let's go, I will explain on the way," he said running towards exit. The rest followed him. Satya and Emily looked at each other from back seat when Deshmukh asked Maan to take them to Geet's house with lights on and as fast as possible.
"Geet's protection detail consists of two constables who are armed and are posted right outside Geet's door. One of them went to rest room and within three minutes he was back at his post only to see that the other constable lying on the floor and his head in a pool of blood. The constable checked the other guy's vein and called me immediately. He isn't dead but unconscious. He thinks that someone might have entered the house as he heard a soft click of the door when he ran towards the fallen constable." Deshmukh said. Emily was already calling Geet but Geet's phone was switched off.
"There are two dead bolts on the front door of that apartment. How the hell did anyone get past them?" Satya said in wonder.
Maan increased the speed and the jeep sped through the sleeping city.
-- Sunday 12:05 AM, Geet's apartment --
"I have been waiting for this moment since the time our eyes met, my darling Nyx."
"Who are you?" Geet asked keeping her eyes trained on the man who was standing in shadows of his room. The dim table lamp didn't throw much light outside the bed area and when the man took a step forward a hazy picture of the man emerged from the shadows.
"Oh my God! You are..." Her voice gets stuck in her throat as the knife in his hand glints in the soft bedroom light.
