PART 8
8(ii). BreakFast
As they reached the kitchen Maan ordered Geet to sit by the table.
"I'll make you something to eat."
"You, sir?"
"Yes, me. Why do you think I can't find my way around the kitchen?" he asked with a challenging tilt of his head.
She just shook her head in bewilderment. Rubbing his hands together with enthusiasm, he asked, "What would you like to eat?"
"Chocolate ice cream!" she blurted out without a second thought.
"What?"
"Anything that isn't spicy...Cereals and milk will do fine."
"But that doesn't involve cooking. And I feel like cooking. I'll make pasta, if you don't like it, then you can always go for your cereals and milk. Alright?"
Geet nodded her head in assent. Her thought s turned inward when he went about finding the necessary ingredients.
'chocolate ice cream...! She thought , baby you are too much...do you even know what time of the day it is? It is 4:30 in the morning...but then how will you know, you are cosied up in my tummy, na...mamma is such a buddhu! Sorry baby. You see we don't eat ice creams this early in outside world. But why did you make me ask for ice cream to your uncle...don't you know he is Maan sir, to mamma...mamma's boss?
While he waited for the water to boil, he observed Geet, which he realized was fast becoming his favorite past time. Her lips were moving silently and her hand was placed over her stomach. It reminded him of the many times he had seen her do the same. What was going on in her mind , he wondered as he had all those times too. Did the realization that she was just a surrogate mother, make the emotional bond she had with the child she carried in her womb any less? He didn't think so...how would she be able to break herself free from her child? How would she give up the child she carried... god what a tangle this was turning out to be!
She looked up and caught his eyes on her and looked away immediately, letting her hand fall into her lap.he cleared his thought and said, "This will take a few more minutes. Do you want tea or coffee?" He knew she usually drank tea.
"I'll make it." She said leaving the chair.
"No, sit down. I said I'll make breakfast,"
"It feels odd...besides baby likes the smell of coffee. I'll make it sir..."
"okay...if you put it that way..."
She made coffee first and ginger spiked tea for herself. By then pasta was ready and they sat down to eat. Maan took the first sip of coffee and gave a hoot of laughter, making Geet curious.
"is there something wrong, sir? With the coffee?
"No, no...it's just perfect, Geet. I just caught on with an old puzzle from Daadi
"Puzzle?"
"Puzzle of the coffee maker..." and he explained. "I must say Geet you make wonderful coffee." He finished with a compliment, making her blush in happiness.
He watched her take tiny bites of the pasta, as if willing her stomach to accept it and then smiled to see her attack the plate with vigor. When she finished what was in her plate, he realized he hadn't taken even a bite. He offered her what was in his plate. She smiled her thanks, a sparkly one he noticed, and started eating. Then she paused, with the fork half way to her mouth and said, "But you didn't have any thing, sir..."
"It's okay. I did have my dinner." He said reassuringly.
"But I feel bad, when you prepared it..."
"Then we will share." He scooped up a bit of pasta with his fork and took it to his mouth. While he chewed he took another scoop and offered it to her. After a slight hesitation, she leaned forward to accept. Then kept her head lowered as she concentrated on the food. Her acceptance pleased him and after taking a couple of scoops, just to give the impression that he too was eating, he leaned back to watch her with an indulgent smile.
"Did you consult the doctor regarding your morning sickness?"
As I said it started recently. I have an appointment scheduled for next week. I thought I will talk to her then."
"Try to pre-pone the appointment, today if possible. He continued in his 'I'm the boss tone' when she was about to protest." At least call her and talk to her. Do you want Daadi to do that?"
Again she shook her head in negative, eyes down cast. He got up to stand in front of her and lifted her face with his hand on her chin. "What is the no to? No, you don't want to talk to the doctor, or no you don't want Daadi to call, haan Geet?" he leaned down to peer into her eyes.
"I...I'll talk to the doctor, sir" she stammered, disturbed by his proximity.
"Good!" he said. Amused by her widened eyes. Then giving in to the impulse lifted the hand holding her chin to trail it down her soft cheek. " And you may call me Maan when we are not in the office." His smile widened as he heard her gasp while turning to walk away. A few steps away he stopped and called out over his shoulder, "you may take the day off today."
When Nakul brought her juice at 10 o'clock, the tray also contained a tub of chocolate ice cream.
