5.THE STRATEGIST
The stay, which Geet assumed would be for a couple of days lengthened into a week. Maan had arranged for the shifting of all her belongings to KM. So it seemed to Geet that she was now here to sta...though she loved Daadi and was happy for the support she gave, she steered clear of Maan's vicinity, unless it was absolutely necessary...such as at meals. She wanted to do something for them too in return and had tried to assist the cook, but found that the smell of cooking sometimes made her run for the washroom. The baby seemed to be adapting himself to the situation of being the heir supreme. Geet found that she strangely lost her appetite at times when she prepared the food herself...the only thing that the baby didn't mind was the smell of coffee...a taste that he shared with his uncle.
A few days in KM and daadi was not happy with Geet's health. She did have her food and medicines on time under the eagle eyes of Daadi, but it was her emotional state that worried Daadi. Daadi felt that Geet needed a distraction to keep her mind off the grief. According to her, Maan had the perfect solution for this problem. Since she didn't want Geet to know about her plan before Maan was brow beaten into accepting it, she decided to talk with Maan in his room.
"Maan I want to discus something with you about Geet."
" So I thought since you couldn't wait for me to get my own coffee," he teased.
He took a sip and said, "Mmm...perfect. Daadi, tell nakul I prefer this brand of coffee. This is just wonderful."
"That is because the 'coffee maker' changed." Daadi said with a secret smile.
" Oh?" Maan continued when Daadi didn't say anything more. "what is it about Geet now? I brought her home to you, so that you could pamper her to your heart's content!"
"Maan, she still has not expressed her grief. I haven't seen her cry even once. She is holding all this pain inside...it is not good for her, nor for the baby. I don't want my parpotha gloomy. I don't think she is sleeping well."
"What can I do about that? I cant demand that she should cry! She seems to be frightened of me as it is...let her join some yoga class."
"That is a great idea, beta. Why didn't I think about that! See, you find a solution to any problem so easily."
Maan put the cup down and looked at Daadi searchingly. She was after something...first the room service, now the praise...he waited for her to continue.
"You know Maan, I think we should keep Geet busy. Provide her with a distraction so that she will not have too much time to be gloomy."
Maan folded his arms across his chest, leaned on the cot frame and asked, "And?"
"You know you can give her some work...you did say you were planning to employ someone to share Rosie's work as she is recuperating. Geet could do that for a couple of months."
" No, absolutely no," Maan shook his head emphatically. "You know I don't tolerate incompetence... you said you wanted her to relax and my office is not the place for relaxation."
"I'm not talking about anything permanent. Just give her something to do in the office...so that she will be engaged. It is not as if another staff will be an excess, now that you have taken up Dev's business too.
"She hasn't completed her graduation."
"Which she would have, if she wasn't taking care of her mother. She would pass her exam with high distinction too. I'm sure your investigators would have would have informed you that she was a scholarship student. Don't tell me you didn't recognize her."
"Let her continue with her education then."
"How can she, beta? How can she go before her friends after a few months... don't you think she has enough suffering on her life, that we should deliberately pile more on her?"
That brought to his mind the image of a proud fifteen year old receiving the shield for the best out going student from his grandmother. She was awarded the scholarship initiated in his grandfather's honour. Daadi had dragged him along for the function despite his protests. He remembered that she was the one to give the welcome speech thru' which she had impressed him with her knowledge of his background...no going to college was out of question.
Now instead of vitality and intelligence, her eyes reflected wariness and a hidden pain.
Daadi could see Maan mellowing and she pressed on...
"If she is with you, then I too don't have to worry about her. I know you will take care of her and look out for her."
He thought about the few instances he saw her at KM, mostly at meals. The idea that she purposefully avoided him had often entered his mind. This wud change that , there was no way she could keep away from him now. That thought filled him with a strange sensation." You wont regret it Maan beta...if nothing else you will get your favourite brand of coffee.."
While that mysterious dialogue kept Maan busy trying to figure out what she meant, Daadi went away to convince Geet about joining Maan in his work.

"Geet" he called louder and she jerked in shock. the pen she was holding dropped to the ground and in her hurry to retrieve it, she struck her head in on the edge of the table.
"Sorry sir," she said rubbing her forehead.
"Why cant u be more careful?" he asked as he came towards her to examine.
