The orphanage (made up, of course) is set in Indraprastha Extension, in the Mandaoli neighborhood. The market that Geet is coming from in the first chapter, is real and is visible on the google map.

Geet is hoping to do well enough that she can be admitted to College of Vocational Studies.

The bar that Dev ends up going to is the China House. In Our Mutual Friend, at one point John tells Bella that he has a job in a china house. When I was searching for a place where Dev could drown his sorrows, given the similar names, I just had to pick the China House Lounge. It didn't hurt that it's also a very popular night spot in Mumbai.

I tried to see if I could find out how much supplies to fix crack in ceilings and roofs might cost in India, but had no luck. So, I looked up some supplies on the HomeDepot website, and tried to estimate how much it would cost in dollars. Then I converted it to rupees and rounded down. That was how I came to the less than 2000 rupees figure.

Also, unlike Maan, I know nothing about construction, nor have I ever tried to repair cracks in houses. So, I went searching the internet to see what would actually have to be done. Here are some articles that I read.
