Chapter 15

Nupur took a deep breath and two steps towards him. She softly brushed his hands with hers and she swore she felt him tremble just a little with her touch. She smiled softly at that and mentally let out a relieved sigh that he didn't flinch when her fingers brushed his. There was so much she wanted to say to him. There was so much she wanted to explain. She wanted to slap his face multiple times for this morning, she wanted to kiss him senseless, she wanted him to hold her and tell her that the last few years were horrible and that their love was forever.

But for now she stuck to basics. They needed to clarify every misunderstanding and then move on to the wilder things. But they had to go slow because things were very fragile right now. She gently walked towards the bench and sat down. She patted the empty spot next to her. He took a deep breath and sat down trying his best to not touch her in any way. But his resolve was short lived as she softly took his hand in hers, interlocking their fingers. He was surprised himself by his own reaction when he didn't protest or say a word and just waited; waited for her to tell him everything that has been hanging between them. The words that were left unsaid. And his wish was granted as she began to speak after a deep breath.

"Mayank, you remember Jiya?" she asked gently. Mayank looked a little confused but answered, "Yeah."

How could he forget Jiya? He had tried finding out Nupur's whereabouts so many times after she'd left him by trying to contact Jiya. But all his efforts went in vain.

He waited for her to continue, and she did so softly, "Jiya was about to make the same mistake as me, Mayank. Although, things with her and Andrew were a bit...much different", she carefully chose her words, "They had broken up multiple times. She found him in bed with another woman after all..." she gave out a sarcastic chuckle and then looked at him right in the eye," but you would never do that", she said sadly, "you love me too much. And you were always ready to take responsibility for your actions..." Mayank had noticed that she'd used the word "love" and not "loved". He didn't comment. He wanted her to continue.

"Just a week after I moved in with Jiya, she started getting sick in the morning. So I forcefully took her to see the doctor. And surprisingly for me, but not so surprisingly for Jiya, we found out that she was pregnant. Her period was late and she'd expected this to be one of the reasons as to why it was late" she looked at him trying very hard to pull out the strength from his fierce brown eyes. Her voice cracked as she continued, just whispering the words, "I couldn't let her do this, Mayank. I couldn't let her make the same mistake as me...to even think that...that ..." she stopped all of a sudden overcome by emotions at her own stupidity. She felt Mayank let go of her hand and that made her heart twist with so much pain that closing her eyes in immense guilt was the only way out. But then she was surprised, when instead of another harsh blow to her because of her previous mistakes, he quietly put his arm around her and caressing her back he pulled her closer to him, waiting patiently for her to continue.

Feeling much stronger now with his acceptance of her, she continued, "I fought with her, I tried so many times to try to make her understand. At first she was so stubborn. Just like I was..." she looked up at him and saw that his eyes were shining, just like the water glows under the moon light. "And finally, I begged her. I promised that she wouldn't have to take care of the baby so she shouldn't be afraid. I promised that I will love him with all my heart. I promised that she wouldn't have to be the unwed mother to her baby."

"Aditya...", Mayank whispered hoarsely, looking at her with a mixture of pain and pride, feeling both hurt and comforted. She simply nodded and the most beautiful smile spread across her face. "So Aditya became my baby, my beta, my son. The first time I held him in my arms, I remember I felt so satisfied. I was so relieved that he could come to this world and that i could touch him and cradle him in my arms. And then the day he uttered the words "Maa" had made me so happy that I finally realized what the feeling that mothers talk so fondly of are about. I coudnt save our baby... but God saved Aditya for me, to help me through possibly the worst phase of my life. He gave me a reason to smile, Mayank. How could the world be so cruel Mayank?" she looked up at him. "It wasn't Aditya's fault! He was just an innocent little child who made the worst of my day turn good. People eventually began sympathising... Jiya's friends began bitching about her...rumours spread..i would understand if they would genuinely show their love to my little baby...but not this ...this..forceful love thats simply born out of pity... it just wasn't fair to my baby...so I brought him here...to India..we would start a new life.. a fresh beginning...but there wasn't a day that I didn't think about you", she completed softly. " I love him so much Mayank. I was so broken, Mayank after I left. I know you were hurt too. But Mayank, our baby was in my womb. I couldn't take care of our baby. I had been stupid in the beginning, but I was still the one responsible for nurturing our little one. I failed Mayank. I failed you, I failed our baby", she said sobbing softly.

"It wasn't your fault", he said quietly after moments of silence, with the only sounds floating in the air being Nupur's sniffles. Nupur looked up at him, wanting to believe that this was all real, that he was really saying this to her. "It wasn't anybody's fault. The time just wasn't right. And as much as it had hurt me...," he stopped and looked at the continuous flow of tears from her eyes, "and as much as it pained you...", he brushed his fingers over her wet cheek, "we couldn't do anything to change it. It wasn't in our hands. We were emotionally screwed during that period and .. and it just wasn't ... wasn't the right time for us", he completed softly.

It was like a very heavy weight was lifted off of her the moment he said those words.

"Mayank, I missed you..", she said cupping his cheek with one hand and brushing his chest with the other. "I missed you too", he said finally letting it all out and stuffing his face in the crook of her neck.

She brushed her fingers through his thick hair and cried with him. They both were very overwhelmed and they needed to let it all finally out.

"I love you so much baby. I have been so stupid, Mayank. All throughout the years", she chanted out while crying telling him exactly how stupid she felt for always denying him and not living that perfect life with him, "I love you so much, Mayank", she said softly bumping her forehead against his.

Mayank just looked at her a little surprised, as it is he was already a little overwhelmed by all the other revelations that were made in such a short span of time. Nupur saw the look of hesitation on his face and she flinched just a little but then getting a grip on herself she continued speaking, "Mayank, I don't want to force this upon you. I know that we've both had our share of pain and heartache, but if you still want to... I know I don't deserve you..but", she couldn't continue as Mayank placed his finger on her lip, shushing her, typical but it still made her cry.

"Nupur, you have to stop taking the blame for everything that went wrong between us, seriously. We were both in this together. We took hasty decisions. And... and... as much as it hurts me to say this..I don't know if getting into this again is the best idea", he completed hesitantly looking at her, trying to gauge her expressions. But all he could detect was sadness. She nodded her head and out of a nervous habit started chewing on her lower lip, trying so very hard to take the pain of his words.

"Who am I kidding?" thought Mayank as he looked at her melancholic eyes that reflected so much sadness. His eyes darted to her lips...those lips which had the sweetest taste...those lips had soothed him once upon a time, no matter what the situation...he wanted to taste those lips, take everything she had to offer and give her everything he had..he began rubbing his thumb over her soft petals, saving them from further damage that Nupur was inflicting them to...all of a sudden every coherent thought had disappeared from his mind and instead his heart began to speak. And when the heart speaks, no reason or logic is used...only the raw desires come to surface and make us do things we wouldn't necessarily choose to do... and that is exactly what he did at that very moment...He kissed her.

The kiss began with just a brush of their lips...nothing harsh...just soft gentle brushes..he brushed his lips against hers once, twice and again until she began whimpering in his arms, begging him for more. He growled harshly as he took her in and as her nail scraped across his neck and made their way to his soft wavy hair. The kiss that had started as a slow and gentle surrender had now turned into a battle with tongues and soft moans and gentle caresses... They had been away for too long... far too long... and kissing each other senseless, till all the oxygen they had ran out and they had to finally let go to get more was all they could think about doing...it was wild, it was passionate, it was Mayank and Nupur reuniting after years of separation, ...but would the kiss really make a difference or would his words to her still keep hanging between them? This was the last coherent thought that Nupur had before he pulled her in another mind numbing kiss.

She woke up with a smile on her face. This was something new to her. Or atleast it was something that hadn't happened for years now. The tiny butterflies she felt floating around. She brought her fingers up to touch her lips...she could still feel her lips tingle. It felt as if she'd just had her first kiss last night, even though years ago she'd been doing much more than kissing with the very same man. She blushed at her thought process...and pushing herself out of her bed she walked to the bathroom, pulling her hair up so that she could tie it in a loose bun.

As she let the hot water soak her body, she began thinking about how her life had completely turned around in just one night...once again. She frowned at the unpleasant past memories... and then smiled thinking about the enormous progress that'd occurred just a few hours ago. She remembered his touch...she could swear she saw the tears reflecting in his eyes too as he finally let her go. He had told her that they would have to take things slowly. He had told her that they were walking a fragile line...and now a child was involved in this mess. And she'd nodded...agreeing with every word that he spoke desperately trying to explain to her how much she meant to him and yet they had to be careful this time. The care that shone in his eyes and in his words left Nupur's heart melting with so much love that the admiring tears at his gestures wouldn't stop. She had mentally kicked herself many times the night before for being so completely stupid and blind to not even see what an amazing man he was! He loved her so much... he could never hurt her like her parents had hurt each other...

His concern for aditya befuddled her yet at the same time warmed her with the sense of familiarity to his loving and caring nature. He didn't even know Aditya! But he was still mulling over how the kid would react if they got together. This was the best part for Nupur. She could see that her man understood. He understood how important Aditya was to her and he was giving the child the same importance.

One Week and 70 kisses later.

"You know we're trying to", he panted out holding her cheek and stealing another kiss before continuing, "take things", another kiss, "slowly", he finished with a grin on his face.

"Well, now, whose idea was that?" she asked with a sly smile on her face as he sucked the skin on her neck as punishment for her snide comment.

Mayank and Nupur had decided that they would do things more traditionally this time around. They wanted to "go slow". And to say it had been hard for the both of them would be a complete understatement. Just a little kissing would get them so lost that reaching second base hadn't taken more than a few minutes after another full fledged discussion about how to go around this time.

They had always been passionate about each other but their reunion had made them crave for being close to each other more than they ever had.

And nupur was frustrated.

She had agreed that they would take things slowly. But with aditya and Mayank getting along so well, and with aditya gone to school and Mayank practically living with her for the past week and not making any move to go further ' or at least stopping when things began to go further ' was breaking Nupur's dam of patience.

She'd thought that if and when things got clear between them and they were on "together" basis, he would ask her to marry him, and this time she'd say yes, and then Aditya, him, her (and more babies) would live happily ever after.

If only things had turned out how she'd thought in her mind that they would.

Nupur frowned as Mayank disentangled himself from her and reached across the table to get a hold of his phone. He started checking for messages while Nupur absentmindedly ran her fingers in his hair. She looked at Mayank as he caressed her thigh with one hand almost instinctively as he was engrossed in his work e-mails with the other.

Sitting there on the couch with him, she could not stop the happiness she felt. She was back with her man. And she could see that even years from now, they'd be the same...that she would always love him and he would always love her. And then with blinding clarity, she realized why things were not going exactly how she'd planned. Its because she'd pictured it all wrong. But she was going to fix it right now.

Smiling slowly as Mayank complained about spam she slid off the couch and sat in front of him on one knee. Holding his hand in hers, she took a deep breath as Mayank stared at her.

"Mayank, will you marry me?"
