Chapter-5

She had just broken up with her boyfriend, and life had never seemed so gloomy.

Every time Piya felt depressed, she drove here to the park. She left her car, slowly walked deep into the wooded area and sat on a bench.

The cold spring sun frowned through torn clouds. The dreary moans of doves cast further gloom over Piya, and she felt vexed. Even the shabby squirrels stared impudently at her.

"I am the most unlucky person on Earth!" she said aloud.

"Why?" she heard from an unknown man as he sat down next to her. Sometimes, when we are upset, we need just to talk with whoever will listen. Piya tried to explain her feelings to the stranger, but the man looked at her oddly, and she grew perplexed.

Piya thought about her life and could find no reason to complain.

She had good parents whose only fault was that they loved her too much and spoiled her. They paid her tuition and other needs, and she had never known what it was to be on a tight budget.

She was in perfect health.

Yes, she had caught her boyfriend cheating on her, but, honestly, she had no strong feeling for him. She realized that now.

So, what was the matter?

She could not understand, and she cried. The man smiled and started speaking easily and articulately.

His soft, peaceful voice echoed deep in Piya's mind and, surprisingly, her soul. She had not given her soul much consideration.

"How trifling are all our problems when compared to the Greatest Mystery of Creation," he said. "How insignificant are all our reasons to be upset in view of the countless number of other worlds. How miserable is all our suffering next to the Eternity of the Universe. Am I right? I'm Abhay Raichand." The man got to his feet. "Look around! The world is beautiful, isn't it?"

Cheerful starlings now chirped optimistically. Warm sunshine flowed all around.

Tender moans of the doves aroused sweet dreams of true love.

And the girl laughed. Piya felt capable of understanding and forgiving everybody, and

it was deep, real happiness. She looked at the man. He started towards his car.

"Abhay, wait!" she gasped. "I don't want you to just go! Let's have a picnic."

"Piya, dear, I'm busy." He smiled tenderly.

Had she given him her name when telling her story? She must have, she decided.

"How about the weekend?"

Abhay hesitated. "Okay."

Chapter-6

Moving towards the door, she swung around as she heard her name being called. Bearing down on her was a still-smug Mr. Manav, some files held loosely in his right hand.

"You might like to look these over this weekend. We'll do three a day. See you Monday."

Taking the files from him, Archana had time only to murmur, "Thank you," before he had turned back to the boardroom.

Tucking them into her carrying case, along with her resume, Archana went out .Aware that she was still under the surveillance of the staff,

Why the devil😡😡 hadn't the manager told her that Mr. Manav was a confirmed misogynist?Y the hell 😡he is so the women-Hatred kinda guy???😕😕 Was it just her he hated, or was it women in general? The manager had assured her the job was as good as hers two days ago, after reviewing her qualifications and interviewing her. He'd said the meeting with the Board of Directors was only a formality and a courtesy to herself and the directors.

it was clear he'd known beforehand that there'd be a problem with Manav. Suddenly she was struck with the feeling that she'd been set up. Mr. Manav had bristled from the moment she had walked in the door and the battle lines had been firmly drawn. His questions had been repeatedly slanted towards the problem that her femininity would cause. Also her size.

Was it possible he hadn't been told she was a woman? If he'd seen her application and read her name as Archana Deshmukh, he might have assumed she was a Women. Well, she'd show him!

Five years of intensive study had prepared her well for this job and she knew she could do it, given the chance. She had spent three years at Welingkar College studying for her Management Institute Certificate and had passed in the top five of her class. Then, knowing she'd need an edge because she was trying to break into a man's field,

So now she was well qualified, maybe even over-qualified and quite aware that Mr. Manav's doubts were well founded.

So much was riding on this job. She had bought the Scooty with a loan from her Dad, had student loans to pay back, and wanted to rent or buy her own place so her parents could enjoy their retirement without having her underfoot. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday would probably be the three most important days in her life so far, and she had to make good.

Manav's smug smile likely meant that he'd chosen the most difficult files he could find and was probably anticipating her downfall with great glee. To be forewarned was to be forearmed and she would be ready for him. There was nothing she could do about her five feet four inches height, but she could research and memorize the files until she knew them inside out.

Telling her parents only that she'd been given a three-day trial period, Archana poured over the files until she felt she knew everything there was to know about them. She had noticed the one right away that was causing Manav to smirk. There was a note on it suggesting that the policy should be cancelled immediately if repairs to the barn weren't completed. It was dated several weeks ago.

There didn't appear to be anything remarkable about the other two files, but she strongly suspected that they were also women-haters. There would be something to look out for anyway.
