"Good morning." He said as he pulled her in.
"Good morning." Geet snuggled into his chest. Geet lay there for a minute then turned around to look at the clock. "Aye Babaji!"
"What?" Maan said calmly.
"It's 10 o'clock!"
"So?"
"I have work to do and you have to get to the office!"
Maan pulled her in again and secured his arms firmly around her waist. "I'm not going to the office today."
"Why not?"
"I don't feel like it."
"Fine." Geet struggled against his hold. "But at least me go!"
"No." Maan replied as he kissed the back of her neck.
"Maan!" Geet thrashed against him but no avail. She finally sighed and gave in. Maan smiled and held her tighter. He pushed her hair away and ran his nose up and down the back of her neck.
"Maan! Geet Bete!" Dadi knocked on the door.
"Yes Dadi Ma?" Geet replied.
"Get up, you two! There is so much work to be done today."
"I would Dadi." Geet said innocently, "but your grandson is holding me hostage."
"MAAN!" Dadi yelled.
Maan sighed, knowing that his defeat was coming. "Yes Dadi Ma?"
"Let my grand-daughter go and open this door right now!"
Geet giggled and slipped out of his hold. Maan hugged the pillow instead.
"My work here is done." Dadi called from the other side of the door and left.
"So you're not going to the office huh?" Geet asked.
Maan shook his head.
"Fine, I'll go." Geet shrugged.
"What are you going to do there?" Maan asked.
"Whatever you do."
Maan dropped the pillow. "You're kidding."
"Nope." Geet started gathering her clothes. "I've been there long enough to see what you do. And Adi is there if I need help."
Geet got her towel and headed into the washroom. She took a quick shower and came out to do her make up and hair. Maan watched her as she did this and every now and then, he would catch her eyes in the mirror.
Geet grabbed her purse off the night table. "Alright, I'm off then."
Maan caught her wrist and pulled her so that she was lying on top of him. He kissed her on the cheek then let her go.
Geet smiled and got up. She walked downstairs and met Dadi in the living room.
"Geet Bete, where are you going?" She asked.
"To the office."
"Then where's Maan?"
"Sleeping."
"Huh. Alright then, you have fun. I'm going to go give Maan and earful." She closed her magazine and headed upstairs.
Geet called the driver and headed to Khurana Constructions. As she opened the door, she took in the sight. It had been a long time since she had step foot in this place. First with her pregnancy, Maan wouldn't let her go to work and then she just stayed at home like a regular housewife. It felt nice to be here again.
She walked past her old office which was exactly the way she had left it with the exception of the name plate that now read Mrs. Geet Khurana. She ran her fingers along it as she passed by and opened the door to Maan's office.
She sat down on the black leather chair and looked at the desk. She sat up straight.
"Adi!" She said in a deep voice. "Get me the Mehra file this instant! Geet, tumne suna nahin maine kya kaha! I want black coffee. NOW."
Geet picked up a file and threw it across the desk. "Tasha, can't you do anything right around here?! Romeo and Manisha! This is a workplace, not a playground. Stop giggling and get back to work!"
"Actually," a voice said from the doorway. "He's been quite nice to us lately."
Geet jumped to see Adi at the door. He came over to sit in the chair opposite to her.
"He hasn't yelled at us since you were a secretary here." He said.
"OH!" Geet tapped her fingers on the desk. "So its like that? Well, two can play at that game."
"So, are you just pretending to be Maan Sir or were you actually planning on working?"
Geet blushed. "I'm actually here to work. I'm going to be Maan for the day."
"Ok then. I came here to tell Maan that the Singhania file has been prepared, he just has to check over it. I've also scheduled a meeting with the new clients after lunch. Think that you can handle it?"
"Of course!" Geet smiled and waved her hand. "You carry on."
"Ok, I'll be in my office if you need any help and Pinky's usually the one who goes out for coffee runs since you left."
"Sure. Thanks Adi."
Adi smiled and closed the door.
Geet sighed. "Okay, lets get down to work."
She started by editing the Singhania file which took a lot more time than she had anticipated. While she was working on it, she also started the designs which took her to lunch time. She was responding to some emails when Pinky walked in.
"Geet, lets go out for lunch! Its been so long since we've spent some time together."
"I know Pinky but look at all this work." Geet kept typing away. "You and Adi go."
"But Geet -" Pinky whined.
"But nothing. Go."
"If you say so." Pinky left and Geet continued to respond to the never ending emails.
When she finished, she was about to go eat when Adi said that the new client had arrived. She walked into the meeting room and opened the door to see an elderly woman.
"Good afternoon Beta, I'm here to see Mr. Maan Khurana."
"Yes, yes. I'm Mrs. Khurana. Mr. Khurana is not here at the office today so I'm just filling in." She sat down.
"Alright, I've sent in all the designs I've worked out. Have you had a chance to look at them?" The woman asked.
"Yes I have and I just have a couple of suggestions." Geet explained her ideas while the woman listened silently. By the time Geet was done, the woman was beaming.
"That's wonderful Beta! But will you be able to make all the necessary changes in time?"
"Of course, consider it done!" Geet smiled warmly.
The woman got up. "Thank you so much Beta. It was a pleasure meeting you."
"You too Mrs-"
"Sharma."
"Mrs. Sharma." Geet gave her a hug and escorted her to the parking lot.
Geet had a smile plastered on her face. She had handled a client! All by herself! Her smile faltered as she remembered all of her pending work and walked back upstairs. The first thing she made sure to do was to make the changes to the Sharma file before she forgot.
For the rest of the day, she answered phone calls and finished computer work. Every time she would finish one thing, Adi would come in with something else to do. Geet was starting to get grumpy.
Adi walked in again. "Geet woh-"
"WHAT NOW ADI?!"
"It's ok Geet, it happens. There's just one more thing you have to do then you can go home." He handed her the file.
"Thanks again Adi."
"No problem."
Geet was so busy clicking away at the computer that she didn't hear the door creak open.
The man came up behind her and threaded his fingers through hers on the mouse.
Geet turned around. "Maan please. I have so much work left to do. I'm going to have to go home late as it is, I don't need you here distracting me."
"Geet," Maan said gently. "You haven't eaten anything all day."
Geet didn't look at him or respond. She was flipping frantically through the stack of papers.
"Geet?" Maan pressed. "Let's go home."
"Now now Maan!"
Maan's eyes had a glint of fire in them. "If you don't start walking out of this office this instant, I will carry you out of it."
"Okay fine!" Geet said, recognizing Maan's serious tone. "Just let me send this email."
Maan turned off the computer and Geet's jaw dropped.
"MAAN!" She screamed as she stood up.
Maan picked her up and carried her to the parking lot as she whined and complained the entire way.
As soon as Maan placed her in the passenger's seat, she crossed her arms and turned to face the window. Knowing Geet's anger, Maan didn't say a word either.
When they got home, it was already 9 o'clock. Geet walked straight towards her garden.
"Geet Bete - kuch kalo!" Dadi said. But Geet was so wrapped up in her cloud of anger that she didn't hear her.
She sat down on the hammock with her brows furrowed. What does he think of himself?
Geet walked outside shortly afterwards with a tray of food. She sat down beside Geet."Please eat something."
Geet was silent.
"For my sake?"
Still nothing.
"Maan's sake?" Geet turned her face further away.
"Babaji's sake?"
"What nonsense!" Maan called from the doorway. "Dadi, she hasn't eaten anything ALL DAY!"
"Kaha na, I'm not hungry!" Geet glared at him.
"Dadi please do something about this pagal ladki. Isko sambalna meri bas ki baat nahin hai." Maan said.
"WHAT?!" Geet yelled. She stood up and walked towards Maan.
"Aur nahin to kya." Maan shrugged.
Geet whipped around. "Dadi, are you listening to this?"
Dadi put the tray down and walked back inside. "That's it, I'm leaving."
Geet turned around so that she was nose to nose with Maan. "Main pagal?"
"Yup." He responded.
"Ok. Fine. I'm not talking to you." Geet lay down on the hammock and put the tray on the floor.
"Geet stop being such a child."
Geet swayed back and forth, twidding with her thumbs.
Maan lay down beside her. "Aye Babaji, what do I do now about this Geet? She's angry because I stopped her from finishing MY work and she won't a thing though I know she's starving." Maan looked to see Geet's reaction but she held a straight face. "Now you'd think that she'd realize that I'm only going to eat if she does. But no. It's not like I've been waiting for her to come to try out my dish or anything. Oh no."
Geet looked at Maan. "You haven't eaten all day either?"
Maan looked down and shook his head.
Geet sat up and pulled Maan up too. She sat cross-legged and picked the tray up off the floor.
She took a spoonful of rice and tried to feed it to Maan but he just took the spoon and pointed it back to her. She took a bite. They took turns feeding each other until the food was done.
Geet took the tray to the kitchen and they walked up the stairs hand in hand.
"Ah." Dadi said from the top of the stairs. "Fight's over already?"
Geet and Maan both looked down to their feet.
"Koi baat nahin. You both carry on. I'm just happy to know that I won't have to face two very angry children tomorrow morning."
Dadi walked to her room and Maaneet to theirs.
Maan closed the door and Geet collapsed on the bed.
"Geet?"
"Hmm?"
"How was the food?"
"It was great Maan." Geet mumbled.
Maan breathed a sigh of relief. "Chalo acha hai. Geet, I was thinking -"
He sat down on the bed. He couldn't help but smile when he saw that his Princess was already sound asleep from a hard day at work.
