Chapter 3 of Dhoondta Dil Raah
As Anurag furiously drove the car, swerving it in and out of the city's clogged streets, Tani was busy looking out the window, thinking.
Mauli was in hospital. Suppose she died. What would she do then? She would be left alone, just like she was so many years ago.
As for Anurag, he was simply thinking of what torture he would inflict on Robbie once that fellow got out of hospital and was declared fit by the doctors. If Robbie was that keen on destroying his pretty face, well he was more than happy to oblige.
Tani's mind was still in Wander-land, when suddenly the car screeched to a halt.
'We're here at St. Mary's, said Anu, beads of sweat beginning to prick his face. Tani could see an odd nervousness in his eyes, as if he would either burst into laughter or start crying at the drop of a hat. He did neither. He simply got out of the car. Before he could open the door for her, she got out herself.
'Concentrate', she told herself, 'not on his agitation, but on Mauli.'
For one moment she forgot everything-her dreams, her ambition, her boss-just her best friend lying unconscious in a hospital bed. Anu had already run to the front desk.
'New case..drunk driver..' he said, out of breath.
'It's a police case sir, so we can't admit him,' the nurse said apologetically.
'Take this,' he said, hurriedly flashing out his wallet. A surgeon who was watching them, looked at the crisp notes with a gleam in his eye.
'Admit him nurse,' he said, carefully prying it out of his hands. Anurag rolled his eyes.
'I think we'll be going to the same unit...,' said Anurag, glancing at Taani. She jerked back to consciousness. 'Yes,' she said weakly.
Anurag couldn't help but smirk. So Miss Cool and Calm could lose her balance sometimes. Well, he certainly wasn't going to catch her.
We all are human, be it a normal day or a day when your brother gets knocked down by a car.
They went to the first floor, where the ICU was. Taani couldn't help but suppress her frustration at the fact that she was behaving like some damsel in distress while Anurag was making all the arrangments.
When everything was done they were ready to meet Robbie and Mauli.
'You piece of good-for-nothing!' Anurag screamed. Then noticing the startled look on the nurses' faces, he hissed, 'Just come home.'
'But it's not even my fault,' said Robbie weakly.
'What were you doing bunking college in the first place? Wasn't today your orientation??' Anurag exploded.
Tani meanwhile was busy consoling a sobbing Mauli.
'Sshh..everything will be alright,' said Tani smiling.
'It's all that boy's fault,' she whimpered.
Tani glanced at Robbie. 'Him?'
'Yeah him...' said Mauli glaring.
'Yeah yeah, blame everything on me,' Robbie snorted.
He looked at Anurag.
'What?'
'Why is that girl saying it's your fault?' said Anurag in a dangerously calm voice.
'It's not,' he insisted, 'I was just teasing her and she happened to run out in the middle of the road.'
'ROBBIE?' said Anurag incredulously.
'College ke pehle din par thoda to chalta hi hai..' said Robbie, making a lame attempt to cool down his brother.
'Why the hell was your brother teasing my friend?' said Tani, glaring at Anu.
'Look, it's not like he tried to..do anything with her?'
'What if he did?'
'What are you saying,' said Anurag, his jaws dropped, 'You actually think my brother would do something like that?'
'If he can tease someone like my friend on the first day of college he can,' said Tani defiantly.
'Look, don't make allegations on my brother's character okay?'
'I am,' she said, fury in her eyes, 'And I'll make sure it comes in a police complaint.'
'Woah woah...' said Mauli, throwing her hands up into the air. 'He was only teasing me Tani, don't take it this far.'
Tani took a deep breath and sighed. Why was she getting so hyper?
'I'm going to sign the discharge papers,' said Anurag, anger radiating off him.
