9. Missing Maan

She missed him so...not seeing him even once in a day made her feel lost. It was all his fault, she thought angrily. Why did he have to instill the habit of him on her, if he was going to go away! She was perfectly happy with her life, with her parents, her Preeti and her sister. When you added Jeeju, Jai and Dia into the equation, she didn't need anyone else.Now even having them around her didn't put an end to her loneliness. Hey Babaaji, how cud you let him do this to me?

Okay, so he had told her the night before he left for Delhi that he would be away for a couple of days. She touched her lips as she remembered his stealthy visit. "To keep your essence with me", he had said after a quick good- bye kiss. While she was still bemused by his assault on her senses, he touched her cheek and with a cheeky grin made his exit. No! She wud not let the memory douse her anger. He had said he would be gone for two days. Somebody needed to teach him to count! By what maths did you make a week count as two days? To make matters worse he didn't even call the last three days! She couldn't reach him when she called. Finally, the day before she had asked Annie about Maan and she said he was in London. Hey Babaaji, please keep him safe!

She glared at his sketch and said, "Just because I prayed for you doesn't mean I forgave you. I'm not talking to you when you come back. I won't talk to you one whole day!" isn't that a bit too long she wondered! "May be half a day," she amended. Then reconsidered, "At least an hour!"

"Maasi! Maasi!" on hearing Preeti's excited voice, she quickly hid Maan's sketch.

"What is it, Preeti?"

"Anuka, Maasi"

"Sorry Anushka! Why is my Anushka so excited?"

"Meeti came with Annie aunty and Naanimaa. Come Naanu calling."

With that she caught hold of Simi's hand and started pulling her.

"Just a moment, sweetie. Let me just wash my face."

"Why, tis not dirty!"

"Why don't you go down and tell Naanu Maasi is coming. Don't forget to show Meeti Chunni's new dress." The thought of showing off the new dress of her favourite doll made an excited Preeti leave the room.

Simi heard Daadi's indrawn breath when Daadi saw her. When she saw Daadi grip Annie's hands she wondered if she was all right. When baba introduced her to Daadi and she bend down to touch her feet, Daadi smiled tremulously and hugged her.

"It's been so long beti..." Daadi said. Then she caught herself and continued "...so long since I saw Maaan so happy. Now I understand why! Come sit with me."

Just then Preeri entered with her father and Meeti. She saw Simi sitting with Daadi and asked, "Maasi, why are you wearing nice clothes? You changed your jumkas and put kajal. Are you going out?"

"It's becoz my dress got wet when I washed my face."

Simi said shooting an angry look at Jeet who was trying to turn a laugh into a cough.

"I told you your face was not dirty."

As the conversation flowed Simi found that Maan's daadi was a wonderful person. Her eyes were full of love. She seemed genuinely happy to meet her. Did Maan know that his Daadi was here? Oh, Maan where are you? Daadi didn't say anything about when he would be back and she cudn't ask her outright too. She was thinking about how to ask about maan without being thought shameless when she heard Annie asking,

"Simi , how about it?"

"What?"

"It seems you were not here!"

"Don't know what is wrong with Simi these days! She can't seem to concentrate. Must be the heat!" Jeet said with a smirk that earned him another glare from Simi.

Annie wanted to go for a movie the next day. Since Daadi didn't mind having her great -grand -daughter exclusively for herself, she asked Simi to go with her.

"I wud have asked Arjun...but there is an important meeting he has to attend. So will you come with me?

"I don't know Annie...actually I don't feel like ..."

"Oh! Didn't you know Annie... Simi doesn't go out with anybody nowadays, isn't that right Sweetie?" Jeet asked Preeti. "Didn't we ask Maasi to go with us to have dinner with Jai chachu and Dia chachi? She didn't even come with us to the park! Simi doesn't like to go out, unless it is a particular someone whose name begins with 'M'." Jeet added with a naughty smile. Everybody laughed.

"Jeeju..!" warned Simi "I'll complaint to Jazdee that you are teasing me."

Just to proof that Jeet was wrong and so that Maan wouldn't learn that she mopped around without him, she agreed to go!

pre-cap again:

"Don't cry, darling! Please don't cry." He repeated soothingly, as he gently ran his hands on her hair. He kissed her forehead tenderly. When her silent sobs subsided, she raised her tear stained face and said and said in a teary voice,

"Don't leave me, Maan. Don't ever do that to me. Without you I can't live!" Her voice broke as fresh tears glittered in her eyes.

"shhh...shhh! That is enough, now. Don't cry, Mishty. I can't bear to see you in tears!"

He wiped her cheeks with his thumbs, framing her face within his hands. "I won't leave you, ever. I promise!"
