Chapter 96: Ek Raat
He remained downstairs late into the night – well, morning really - even after everything was put away and his parents had gone to bed, and Rathan had gone to the spare room that had finally been cleaned out for him. He knew he was stalling... but the fact of the matter was that if this was the way that things were going to be, he had to deal with it rather than run from it…
He walked up the stairs slowly, dreading the moment when he would have to walk into the room that he shared with her. He felt blessedly numb right now… seeing her was bound to take that away… he hoped that she had fallen asleep already, that way he wouldn't have to think of anything or deal with everything that was forever wrong between them tonight itself.
There was no light coming from underneath the door and he felt a moment of relief. It lasted only until he opened the door and found that she was in the bathroom. He closed the door behind him and walked to the closet, taking off his shirt on the way there. He could hear her humming in the bathroom and it made him feel like his chest was going to cave in… He stopped for a moment to close his eyes and take a deep breath. He had to be in bed before she came out or his head was going to explode as well.
He changed without delay and managed to get in bed just before the bathroom door opened and she came out. She was humming still, but he knew the precise moment when she knew that he was in bed already, because her humming came to an abrupt halt.
"Shiv…"
He heard her call his name softly. He tried to slow down and deepen his breathing so that she would think him asleep.
"Shiv…" she called again and he squeezed his eyes at how soft his name sounded on her lips. Was this guilt? Did she have that? He didn't think so. Gauri never did anything that she felt guilty about. She was just not that kind of woman. If she had decided to meet him… if she had decided to do anything at all really… it would never be anything that went against her sense of right and wrong. But he just didn't understand why it had to be behind this house. And that too on the day of his brother's Sangeet! Even if she didn't care that he saw, wasn't she at least worried that his parents might find out?
He heard her move around for a few more minutes before he felt her weight on the bed as she eased in. For a moment, he held his breath, before he reminded himself that he was supposed to be in deep sleep and slowly released the breath that he had been holding in.
He felt her right behind him and then felt her peek at him over his side. He focused on just his breathing, even and slow, even and slow… until he was sure that she was convinced that he was asleep.
A half hour must have passed before he thought that she had fallen asleep as well. He didn't think sleep would come to him this night… or any other night when he had to lie next to her…
He turned around tentatively to see if she was really asleep, and when he was convinced that she was, he turned around fully to face her. The covers were only over her half-way and he thought that he saw…
He jerked upright in bed and paused only a breath before he eased the sheet away from her body…
She fidgeted slightly and it only served to reveal in better angle what she was wearing…
Dear Lord…
The front itself was just a crushed velvet material, soft to touch, but it covered her completely. But it was the sides of it that was nothing short of a miracle. The front and back of the form-fitting gown was held together by strips of lace that barely covered the profile of her incredible curves…
Why the hell was she wearing this? Where had she gotten it? Was she trying to kill him?
He couldn't look away as she shifted her body again, raising one knee against the other, revealing the long line of her legs all the way up the curve of her… he swallowed hard as he took in the sight.
She must have felt the chilly air then because she tried to pull the covers up, but he held them back from her reach.
She made to reach for it again and this time he pulled the sheet off completely.
She must not have fallen into a deep sleep because he saw her eyes flicker before she opened them fully.
She saw him sitting up in bed and sat up as well, brushing her hair back from her face.
"Shiv?" she whispered. "What's wrong?"
He stared at her without saying anything for a moment. How calm she seemed. Not at all like a woman who had been crying on the shoulders of the love of her life only a few short hours ago.
"What are you wearing?" He finally asked when he trusted himself to speak.
She looked down at herself, just then appearing to realize her scandalous attire. He saw her eyes widen and it was several moments before she looked back up at him.
"It's a nightgown." She answered without really looking at him.
"A nightgown?" he asked with a snort.
She looked back at him then, seemingly taken aback by his tone.
"Yes, a nightgown." She said, a definite coolness creeping into her tone as well.
"I don't think there is much of a gown there for it to be a nightgown."
His tone was harsher than he intended and she looked back at him in clear annoyance.
"Fine! It's on me, not you, so don't get all worked up!" She slid off the bed then and he could see how spectacular the damn thing looked on her when she was standing up. He hated her for doing this to him.
She started to stalk off to the bathroom and he quickly jumped off the bed to follow her.
"Why are you wearing it?" he asked her as he pulled her back towards him by her elbow.
"Because I look good in it!" Her eyes flashed as she bit out and pulled her elbow out of his grip, turning around to resume her escape to the bathroom.
He ground his teeth as he followed her and pulled her back towards him yet again.
"Because you look good in it? Is that what you said? Modest much??" She struggled to get out of his arms and he held her tighter.
"Why the hell should I be modest? I am married to the biggest narcissist this side of the Pacific! Isn't that right?" His eyes widened at her accusation. "What? Don't look so surprised! You think you are the only one who knows his sex appeal?"
"Oh, so now you want to advertise your sex appeal? To whom?" he could feel his nostrils flaring in anger. Great! This was exactly what he hadn't wanted to do tonight!
"What the hell do you care? Clearly, it's not having much of an effect on you! So, why don't you mind your own business?"
"You are carrying my child. That makes it my business to worry about who you show your body off to!" his answered in a low growl and she slapped him.
"To hell with you, Shiv! You are an asshole of the first kind!" she pushed him off now before finally making it into the bathroom. But before she could lock it behind her, he pushed the door open, grabbing her arm and pulling her to him when the force of his entry almost knocked her over.
"I swear to God!" she started but he pulled her back against the door and pinned his body against hers.
"I am an asshole? I am an asshole? How dare you?"
"Don't forget first-rate! You are a first-rate Asshole!" She repeated, her face contorting in rage as she pushed against him.
"I am not the cold-hearted bitch who is seeing her ex- behind her husband's back!" he yelled back.
(To be cont. – obviously! – so please hold the chappals ;)
