"I don't wish to even breathe the air that's touched you, I don't want to pass through the place your shadow has passed by. I hate you Geet, I hate you from the bottom of my heart..."
She twisted and turned in her sleep as the words rang in her head. Try as much she may, the echo of his words didn't subside.
"Damn the Dusht Danav!"
Geet jerked up to a sitting position and threw aside her comforter.
"What kind of a man is he to invade people's dreams and not even let them sleep peacefully?" she groaned.
"The kind of a man one doesn't dare to fall in love with. Except of course, her highness, Geet Handa," came Pinky's rustic sounding reply.
"Oh yeah, and who was the one to bestow him with the honorable epithet of DD?" Geet bit scathingly. "Dhak-Dhak, wasn't it? Because he sent your hearts racing and pulses skittering with his mere presence?"
"True. But hearts can go dhak-dhak as much with fear as with anything else, which was precisely the case with us, unlike you," Pinky teased.
"Oye Pinky, shut up!" Geet scowled.
"As you say." Pinky pulled her comforter over her and went back to sleep leaving Geet alone with her befuddled mind.
"To hell with the Dusht Danav! What does he think of himself dumping me like that? Being Maan Singh Khurana doesn't give him the right to play with people's feelings, picking them up and dumping them as per his heart's desires-"
"Geet darling, why don't you move someplace else -the balcony, may be- with your Dusht Danav? You can enjoy the whole night to your heart's content. But please, I NEED SOME SLEEP!" Pinky interrupted.
Geet, however, continued ignoring Pinky's words, "-Oh you just wait and watch, this is Geet, Miss Hoshiayarpur Express and I swear by you, Maan Singh Khurana, tomorrow will be a day that you'll never forget!"
"GEET, I'M TRYING TO SLEEP!"
"SO, GOOD NIGHT!"
Geet turned off the light and burying her head amongst the pillows tried to get some sleep.
The shrill ringing of her cell phone awoke Geet in the morning.
"I bet it's the Dusht Danav again! This man has made it the mission of his life to make life hell for me! Here rises the sun and here he calls. As though he's been waiting by the phone all night for the first ray of light to crack the dawn so that he doesn't miss a moment of my day from his service." She picked up the receiver and barked, "Shoot, you Dusht Danav!"
"Geet! What did you just say?" The instrument slipped from her hands as she heard the Dusht Danav growl like a ferocious wolf and she barely managed to catch it between her elbows.
It was actually Him!
"Mm... Mmm... Mmm.... Maan Sir! Ggg... Good morning," she managed to say.
"Geet, what time does your sun rise?" he asked sharply.
"The same time as yours!" she retorted and a second too late bit her tongue. "Um, um-um-um... I mean..."
"Shut up!"
Geet shut her mouth and she actually placed a finger on her lips like a little kid would.
"Now listen, that file, the one of our latest deal with Shykh Shanawar of Dubai, I want it now. I'm heading to my farmhouse, get it there," Maan ordered.
"But sir, that file's on your des-"
"Shut up, I said. Not a word more!"
Damn you to Hades!
"I want that file in an hour..."
May you rot in the fiery pits of hell for an eternity...
"...and I want you, Geet, to bring it yourself..."
Devil take you, Maan Singh Khurana!
"...Geet, do you hear me?" asked Maan.
Oh, of course I do. But didn't you say 'not a word more'? So now, I'll give you that.
"Geet?"
She merely made a sound of assent and he said, "So see you in an hour."
Geet made the same sound again which annoyed Maan but he preferred to ignore her and rang off.
Miss Hoshiayarpur Express, today is a day which you'll remember for life. No one dares insult Maan Singh Khurana, thought Maan as he got into his Classic SUV and headed to his farmhouse.
"Pinky!" Geet roared as she searched for a sign of Pinky in the house. She would not take that file to Maan Sir. She'd send it with Pinky, she decided. However, on not finding Pinky anywhere she decided to call her.
"Oye Pinky, where did you head off to so early in the morning?" Geet scolded when Pinky answered.
"Maan Sir's party, at his farmhouse!" came Pinky's excited reply.
"Party at Maan Sir's farmhouse?" queried Geet surprised.
"Yeah, he's organised a recreational bash for the staff and employees of Khurana Constructions. Haven't you been invited?" asked Pinky.
The Dusht Danav had thrown a party for everyone and he expected her to slave through the day?!
"Geet?"
"Huh?"
"You're not invited?"
"Of course, I am!"
"Cool then. See you there!"
Maan's farmhouse was a lavish bungalow spread on acres of sprawling land with lush green gardens surrounding it. Blossoms of red, white, pink, lilac, lavender and yellow were in full bloom adorning the greenery. A vast stretch of a brilliant blue dazzled under the shining sun. People in shorts and bikinis seemed to be enjoying a swim in the glittering pool. Canopied tables with chairs upholstered in white hosted people enjoying drinks and snacks. Decorative streamers of mirror and crystal added to the beauty of the canopies. The D.J was playing a medley of rock and jazz and the people were grooving to the beat.
Geet took in the sight of the people making merry and cursed Maan once again. He'd invited everyone! Everyone including Adi, Pinky, Sasha, Tasha and even Pandeyji, Romeo and Manish(a).
Except her!
She'd been looking for him since the past thirty minutes but the Dusht Danav was nowhere to be seen. Frustrated and annoyed, she banged the file on an empty table and took to the chair.
Looking towards the sky she muttered, "Hey Babaji, could you not find a more humane, a more decent man from your creation as my boss? Sometimes I'm forced to think that you deliberately chose this monster for me as a penance for some crime that I might have committed in my past birth."
"Hi Geet!"
Geet looked up and saw Romeo and Manish(a) approach her table. They occupied the vacant chairs and Romeo asked, "Enjoying the party?"
"As if the Dusht Danav would allow me to!"
Romeo and Manish(a) exchanged a look.
"You mean trouble with Maan Sir, Geet darling?" Manish(a) asked.
"Oh look, Alana, someone's missing me, big time!"
Geet spun around and found the Dusht Danav standing there, dressed in blue denims and a crisp white, button-down shirt, coolly with a bimbo, his arms draped around her waist.!
Babaji, the man was fast! He'd dumped her just last night and this morning he was already swinging a bimbo on his arms.
"Erm, Geet, Excuse us!" Romeo and Manish(a) disappeared as Maan shot them an icy glare.
"Cowards," Geet muttered.
"Well is it surprising, honey? Maan Singh Khurana is indeed a personality to be missed!" said the bimbo. She was dressed in a skimpy skirt, barely skimming her thighs, and a blouse with a plunging neckline. Her shoulder length hair, a rusty brown shade, hanging loose, huge black eyes and a nose with flaring nostrils, together conspired to create ugly beauty.
Cheapo bimbo! thought Geet.
Without a word, Geet thrust the file towards Maan. Her insouciance towards Alana surprised him and his eyebrow shot up. He pulled Alana closer and shot Geet a challenging look. The tiniest movement in her eyes spoke of hurt but she still didn't speak.
No reaction.
Trying to provoke her a bit more, he leaned closer to Alana and said, "A happening company at a happening party."
"Aw Maan," Alana said and hugged him.
Chipku bimbo!
His slanted gaze was directed at Geet and he searched for her reaction out of the corner of his eyes. She fumed and looked away but not a single word was uttered.
This was not fun, thought Maan.
"Hey Alana!"
Alana pulled out of Maan's arms to see who'd called her.
"I'll just be back, honey," she said and walked away.
Yeah, now go and get glued to some other hunk.
Maan now turned his attention to Geet.
"Geet!"
So, the Dusht Danav finally has some moments to spare. I bet it's to issue some more orders of my slavery.
She turned around and thrust the file at him with such force, it jabbed into his chest. An eyebrow shot up. Maan took the file and placed it on the table beside them and looked at her intently. Geet moved a step back. Maan advanced on her and Geet kept moving back. They were now in a secluded section of the garden with no one around.
"Are you jealous, Geet?" he whispered huskily.
Jealous? Of that bimbo? You gotta be kidding!
She kept moving back until her back hit a hard surface. She sneaked a look behind and groaned. He'd backed her against a huge tree.
"What happened, Geet? Cat got your tongue?" his voice was a hoarse whisper now, teasing her.
"Maan Singh Khurana did!"
He shot her an amused look.
"Didn't you ask me to shut up this morning? I was doing exactly that!" she snapped.
"Of course, I did. But I expect you to answer when I question you. So tell me, are you jealous?" he asked.
"Jealous of Alana?" Geet laughed, "Maan Singh Khurana, what happened to your taste? Didn't you pride yourself for rich taste? Then where did you pick this cheapo bimbo from?"
"Cheapo bimbo! Look at yourself, Behenji!" sneered Alana who'd reached there searching for Maan.
Cat fight! This is gonna be fun. Maan grinned.
"Thanks for the compliment, bim-bo," Geet said and stalked away.
Maan suppressed a hearty laugh.
"Wait a minute," Alana ran after Geet chasing her, "You can't walk away like that!"
"Was I even talking to you, bimbo?"
"Wait!"
Alana's screeches didn't have any effect on Geet and she kept walking and they soon reached the poolside. Maan followed them in silent amusement.
Manish(a) and Romeo saw the bustling trio approaching.
"Romeo, this snotty female is the reason of Geet's crabby mood," Manish(a) said.
"Oh, so Maan Sir's brought her to annoy Geet," replied Romeo.
"Poor darling! She's all alone," whined Manish(a).
"Is she?" Romeo asked with a wink.
"Oh, Romeo, you're so naughty!"
"Listen you, Behenji!" Alana yelled.
"Why are you following me?" Geet asked irritated as she spun around to face Alana.
Maan was called by one of his staff and was a few blocks away from Alana and Geet. Alana did a quick scan of the periphery and finding Maan away, grinned.
"For this!"
To Geet's horror, Alana pushed her into the pool!
Then everything happened at the same time. Manish(a) and Romeo who had been watching them intently gasped, "GEET!"
Alana flung herself into the pool too and shouted, "MAAN! Help me!"
Maan spun around and was shocked at the sight before him. Alana was shouting for help whereas Geet was nowhere to be seen.
"Romeo, do something!" Manish(a) panicked.
Maan and Romeo jumped into the pool at the same time. Maan was instantly enveloped by Alana who threw her arms around him and pretended to faint. He carried her to safety. As he stood by the poolside with Alana in his arms, he saw Romeo emerging with Geet. He was holding her close in a near hug.
Seeing Geet in another man's arms, let alone because he'd saved her, sent a wave of fury through Maan. Unthinkingly, he let go of Alana, who fell back into the pool with a huge splash, and curled his fists in rage. He took a step towards Geet but without as much as a glance at him, she stalked away with Romeo, and Manish(a) who followed at their heels. They could hear Alana cursing as she climbed out of the pool on her own this time. Once away from the poolside, the trio collapsed into laughter.
"Poor Alana! You should've seen the expression on her face when Maan Sir dropped her!" said Manish(a).
"Maan Sir's expression on seeing us was also priceless," added Romeo laughing.
"They deserved that!" snapped Geet.
"Well baby, the real fun is yet to begin," said Manish(a).
Romeo winked.
"We'll just be back," they said and disappeared leaving Geet alone.
Her thoughts drifted back to Maan, how he'd dumped her just last night and how he was already flirting with Alana today.
"Oye Geet, was he the last man alive on earth to fall in love with? Couldn't you find a more decent, a more suitable and more humane man for yourself? People avoid trouble but you invite it. You go out looking for it. And what can be a bigger proof than that Dusht Danav, Maan Singh Khurana himself?" Geet kept talking to herself as tears trickled down her cheeks.
A hand materialised before her holding a tissue. She looked up and was surprised to find Maan. A smile of gratitude was about to light up Geet's face when Maan said, "I've stopped dirtying my handkercheif."
Geet's hand froze mid-air. Pulling it back she sharply retorted, "And I've stopped taking things from strangers."
Maan hadn't anticipated that. It felt like a stinging slap.
"Chaanta laga... Hai laga..."
Romeo hummed as he approached Geet and Maan and offered his own handkercheif to Geet. He dared not meet Maan's gaze which he was sure was spitting fire. Geet was about to take it when he pulled back his hand and instead dabbed at her cheeks gently. Maan crushed the tissue in his hand and stalked away.
"Thanks Romeo," Geet said.
"You're welcome. Geet, cheer up. Manish(a)'s putting up a performance for you. Have a look," said Romeo and pointed in the direction that Maan had stalked off to.
Geet spotted Maan at one of the tables, Alana sitting beside him. She seemed to be in a temper from that second swim in the pool. Maan, too, was furious. She watched along with Romeo as Manish(a) approached them.
"Hey Handsome!"
Maan looked around to check whom Manish(a) was addressing and realising that it was him, he glared at him icily.
"Oh, why the temper, honey?" Manish(a) asked as he placed a hand on Maan's on the table. Maan jerked back and pulled away his hand. Alana looked on with interest.
"Shut up, Manish!" he growled.
Geet and Romeo giggled.
"Oh, these girls! First Geet, then Alana, then Geet again. That's the reason I'm not interested in them. They waste a lot of time and play with your feelings," Manish(a) continued.
Maan gritted his teeth and clenched his fists.
"You know, Maan, you and me, we'd make an awesome pair together," said Manish(a) leaning closer to him. "Maan and Manish(a), doesn't that sound cool, baby?"
"Manish..." Maan warned through gritted teeth.
"Oh baby, don't feel shy."
"Stop babying me!" Maan thundered. Geet and Romeo collapsed into raucous laughter. "And if you care a damn about your life and job, then get the hell out of my sight!"
Maan shot a look of deep disgust and fury towards Geet and Romeo and stormed out of there, Alana following at his heels.
"Oh man, that was hilarious!" said Romeo to a beaming Manish(a) who'd joined them.
"Maan Sir's expressions were incredible!" Geet added still laughing.
After a while the laughter subsided and Geet turned sombre. She turned to Manish(a) and asked, "Manish(a), you're not truly interested in Maan Sir, are you?"
"Geet, honey, I'm gay but I have some principles," said Manish(a) proudly, "I'm not interested in guys who're already in a relationship. Since you and Maan Sir are together, it rules him out. But Adi..." Manish(a) had a dreamy look.
"Erm, Manish(a), even Adi's not single for that matter. Pinky and him, they have a thing going," said Geet.
Manish(a) looked from Geet to Romeo with a hurt expression on his face and then suddenly exclaimed, "Romeo!" and jumped forward to hug him. Romeo sprang back at the same instant and hugged a bewildered looking Tasha who happened to pass by then and said, "Sorry Manish(a), I'm not single either!"
"Geet, Maan Sir has summoned you inside."
It was Sasha. She threw them a dirty look and glared at Tasha before she walked away. Tasha disengaged herself from Romeo's arms and ran after her calling, "Sasha!"
Geet, Romeo and Manish(a) exchanged looks.
"What now?" asked Romeo.
"Let's find out," said Manish(a).
"Guys, this could cost you high. Your jobs are at peril," Geet said guiltily.
"Oh, but the fun's worth it," said Manish(a).
"You bet!" Romeo winked.
"Thanks, this means a lot," said Geet gratefully. The duo smiled and joined her. As they went in, a blast of music greeted them. The place had been converted into a huge dance floor. Loud music blared from the speakers and disco lights swirled overhead. A lavish bar was set up in a corner where drinks were served to all.
Geet scanned around for Maan and saw him standing across the floor.
"Bimbo by his side again," Geet muttered. She stalked up to him, leaving Romeo and Manish(a) to enjoy themselves, and asked, "You called me?"
Maan raised his eyebrows, "I did?"
Geet scowled at him. He leaned close to her and whispered in her ear, "Geet, be tactful. I know you want to be with me, but your desperation shows."
Geet itched to slap him but kept her cool. What did the jerk think of himself?! She glared at him but didn't say a word. He smiled and then turned to Alana and asked her for a dance. The bimbo readily agreed and bounced off to the dance floor with him.
Maan placed his hands on Alana's waist and pulled her close as a soft, romantic music filled the hall. His gaze, however, sought Geet and transfixed on her searching her eyes for the merest flicker of emotion in them. Geet stood watching, expressionless. They began swirling with the music and seeing them together, Geet was forced to relive that first dance with Maan. As the music picked pace, Maan swirled Alana and dipped her low, his gaze constantly on Geet. He then lifted Alana in a regal lift and performed a graceful swirl and brought her back to the floor. Geet gritted her teeth and looked away. Maan didn't miss the movement. He even caught the moisture in her eyes which would leak out as tears soon. As the music fell to a lull again, he let go of Alana and approached Geet.
Geet saw Maan walk up to her. He was his arrogant self, pride in every stride. With a haughty expression on his face, he offered her his hand, "I know you want to dance with me." Geet glared at him and scowled. She hated him! She hated that confident smirk on his face. She hated his arrogance, she hated his over-confidence! Geet raised her hand to put her hand in his but mid air, to her pleasant surprise, it was grabbed by Romeo who appeared out of nowhere and dragged Geet to the floor for a dance leaving Maan frustrated.
Throughout the regal swirls and twirls and the graceful lifts and dips and tapping beats, Geet partnered Romeo and Maan partnered Alana but their gazes were fiercely locked with each other's in a rhythmic dance of their own.
As Geet watched, Alana leaned forward and kissed Maan! Geet tore her gaze away and clenched her teeth. Cursing and swearing, she excused herself and leaving Romeo clueless, strode away to the bar.
"What was I thinking pretending to flirt with Romeo? As if that would have any effect on him. One needs to be human to understand feelings. Is he even human?..." she muttered to herself. For a moment she sat there clueless what to order. She'd heard people order using various names like wine, whisky, vodka, rum, champagne, beer, alchohol, etc but she didn't know what was what.
"Get me a strong drink, the strongest that you have," she ordered.
The bartender raised a brow and looked her over. Sporting the attire that she was -a sea-green salwar suit, a dupatta around her neck and hair tied in a single plait with tresses hanging loose on either side of her face-, she seemed hardly a customer for an order of this sort.
"Oye, haven't you seen a girl before?" she snapped. "Turn your gaze around and you'll find prettier bimbos!"
"Erm, ma'm..." the bartender began but Geet cut him short, "Does your boss -Maan Singh Khurana, isn't he?- need excuses to fire his employees?"
The bartender got the message. He gulped and quickly served her order.
Maan scanned the hall for Geet but she wasn't visible. She'd disappeared -God knew where- and he was worried. When she'd stalked off, her mood was the worse he'd ever seen. Alana had taken it too far this time. She'd leaned for a kiss and he'd moved back but a second too late. The damage was done. Geet thought that Alana had actually kissed him. The hurt, fury and pain in her eyes had pricked him.
He spotted her across the hall at the bar! What the hell was Geet doing there? She appeared to be muttering something to herself.
"...looks like they have buttons for eyes to see that Maan Sir and me have a thing going. Silly bees! Can a man like Maan Sir, the great Maan Singh Khurana, ever have feelings for a girl like me? Can he?" Geet laughed.
He crept up beside her. The bartender saw him approach and stiffened. Maan shot him an icy glare and he answered his unvoiced question.
"Three pegs down, Sir and she's still asking for more," he said guiltily. Maan dismissed him and he went to serve the other guests.
"Geet?"
Geet was too lost in her own thoughts to pay attention around.
"Geet?"
"...bimbos like Alana are his type. Short skirts and high heels appeal to the Dusht Danav better..."
"GEET!"
"Eh?" she looked up and smiled. "Oye, it's Maan again. You're back to invade my dreams. Do you know, you always star in them but always as the Dusht Danav who loves making life hell for me."
Maan softened at her smile and her addressal of him by his first name alone.
"Geet, let's get you out of here."
"No Maan, I want one more drink."
"Geet..."
"No!"
He sighed exasperatedly. Then bent and scooped her up in his arms.
"Maan!" Geet let out a squeal of surprise.
"Shh, Geet."
He quickly strode out of sight of the curious onlookers and ascended the stairs to the spare bedroom. He lay Geet on the bed and took off her shoes and then put a blanket over while she watched him curiously. She pulled herself to a sitting position and said, "I didn't know that this drink -whatever it was- would have such a wonderful effect. You are never so sweet and caring in my dreams," she smiled again. A sweet smile which melted Maan's heart.
"Always scolding me, reprimanding and rebuking me," she frowned. "You know, sometimes I feel that you're like a vampire,-"
Maan raised his brows.
"-but of a special kind. One who thrives on my blood alone." Maan couldn't supress a rueful smile. "Your day is incomplete--"
"Shh... Geet, you'd better go to sleep now," he placed a finger on her lips, "we can talk tomorrow."
"No! I want to talk," she looked away and pouted, her hands folded across her chest.
Maan sighed again. Miss Hoshiayarpur Express knew how to get her own way even when under the influence of alchohol.
What had taken over him that he'd decided to dump this silly, sweet girl? With her cute antics and silly theatrics, she'd carved a place into his heart, a place which could never be filled by anyone else. Ever.
"Your day is never complete until you've drained that last drop of blood out of me..."
Maan laughed.
"What makes you laugh?" she accused.
"Geet, you have this image of me in your mind as the ultimate monster, don't you? That's why you've given me names like Dusht Danav, monster and vampire. Tell me something, if I'm so cruel, harsh and wicked, then why don't you run for your life the first chance you get?" he asked. "Why be masochistic and stick around?"
She made a face and then said, "Because... Because, I can't!"
Maan leaned close to her and said, "I'll tell you why."
Geet looked at him confused. He held her hands in his and leaned closer to her. She looked at him with dizzy eyes. Their lips were inches apart and as Maan leaned in to close the distance, Geet suddenly collapsed back on the bed in slumber.
Maan banged his hand on the bed and cursed. Only Geet had the power to drive him so crazy as to forget where he was and what he was doing. He smiled ruefully and tucked the blanket over her. Placing a tender kiss on her forehead he said, "Because you love me, Geet. Because we belong together."
Awake or asleep, Geet always won because Maan Singh Khurana had lost his heart to her.

Alrighty lovelies! Howzzat?
I know it was incredibly long (12+ pages!) but it so happened that one thing led to the next and I just couldn't scrap out anything. I'm too bad at that. So, this one-shot might've given you an idea as to how much I lack in this talent of making people laugh. Nonetheless, though lamely, I tried. Hope it wasn't a total waste of your time.
Do leave your comments/criticisms because I'm desperately waiting here to read it.
