Mrs. Kelly's delivery had gone surprising fast. Within only twenty minutes of getting her into the delivery room the baby, an adorable little girl, was born kicking and screaming. After making sure that Mrs. Kelly and the baby were all clear for any complications or problems Geet left, but not before offering the couple her heart felt congratulations. She also made it a point to pat Mr. Kelly on the back for not passing out during the delivery, although he came rather close a few times.
After stepping out, she rushed over to see Naina. She knew that Maan was waiting for answers about what was going on, but the situation was so extreme and delicate at the same time, she didn't want to do anything until she talked to Naina. The girl had just been raped – violated. How much did she want her brother to know? Did she want him to know anything at all?
She maneuvered her way through the ER department by using hidden halls just so that Maan wouldn't see her, because if he did and he asked her questions, she wouldn't know what to say. A few minutes later, she stood outside of Naina's room. She debated for a second if she should barge in because she knew Naina was giving her statement to the police. She didn't want to intrude or impede on the statement, but she knew she couldn't wait.
Geet knew that the wait was killing him – and that was killing her.
When she opened the door, she was shocked at the scene that stood before her. Naina was curled in a ball, her knees drawn up to her chest and arms wrapped around her knees, as she cried. Her words stuttered as the tears flowed from her eyes without any stop.
"What's going on?" Geet demanded as she rushed in and closed the door behind her.
Both of the officers, Steve and Bill, were taken off guard by her entrance.
"She's having a hard time recollecting the…incident," Office Steve said.
"So you were saying," Officer Bill continued, "He came from behind…"
A fresh wave of tears began flowing from Naina's eyes as she looked at Geet.
"I can't…I just…can't", Naina cried.
Something inside Geet melted as she rushed and took Naina in her arms and enveloped her into a hug. She instantly felt Naina cling back at her as the sobs wracked through her body.
"That's quite enough," Geet said to the officers, "You will have to come back later."
"But…" Officer Bill began to complain.
"You can see how traumatized she is…as her doctor I cannot let you continue," Geet said.
The officers knew that there was no use in getting into an argument with Geet at this point – they weren't going to win. The both stood quietly and headed to the door.
"Please let us know as soon as she is ready. We will wait in the waiting room," Officer Steve said.
Geet simply nodded her head and soon they were gone. She stood there simply holding Naina and stroking her back to sooth her the best she could. The only sounds that filled the room were Naina's sobs and sniffles, taking Geet back to the night she'd first meet Maan's little sister.
--------Flash Back--------
Geet rushed into the Khurana mansion. Maan had called her only thirty minutes before asking her to come over and help him find his sister. Geet wanted to ask for details, like how could he loose his sister, but she controlled herself after she registered the fear in his voice. She knew how much he loved his sister – he loved her more than anything else. With their parents being absent so often, Maan always put his sister's needs ahead of everything. He hadn't even introduced her to his sister because he didn't want Naintara to be uncomfortable. Geet understood and loved him more for the way he loved his sister.
She came into the living room and saw him pacing around the room.
"Maan…" she called as she placed her purse the first chair she saw.
"Geet…" he said as he turned to the sound of her voice.
The relief was evident in his voice as he came and pulled her into his arms.
"I don't know where she is or where she went," he said.
"But what happened?" Geet asked.
"We got into a fight," Maan said.
"About?" Geet's asked.
"Mr. & Mrs. Khurana," Maan said coldly.
Geet and Maan had been together for just over six months and in the entire time, she'd never heard him refer to his parents as anything other than Mr. & Mrs. Khurana. He had once told her that they were no existent parents and didn't deserve the title of 'Mom and Dad'. That was it; he never brought up his parents again.
Geet knew better than to ask more questions.
He only said that they'd gotten into a fight so Naintara had gone up into her room and slammed the door. That has been nearly two hours ago. When he'd gone up just a half hour ago, he opened the door to her room and was shocked to see that she wasn't there. They'd searched the entire house and couldn't find her.
"The police are on their way," Maan said.
"Ok," Geet said, trying to remain calm. "You stay and wait for them…I'm just going to look around one more time."
"I've already looked everywhere!" Maan roared.
Geet stroked his hand to calm him. "I know you did, I'm just going to do it for my own satisfaction."
Maan sighed as he nodded his head in agreement.
Geet rose to her to toes and placed a soft kiss on his cheek.
"It's gonna be ok," she said. "We'll find her."
She then searched around the house but found nothing. She was passing large window in one of the second floor halls when her eyes fell on a few structures outside. There was a barn off to one corner where Geet knew they kept the horses, there was a guest cottage that sat empty, and then there was the pool house which had been closed since it was winter time and it wasn't being used.
Geet first checked the barn, then the cottage and found nothing. She checked the pool house next and again found nothing. She had just turned to leave when she heard a sniffle. She stopped dead in her tracks.
"Hello," she called. "Is someone there?"
She waited for a second.
"No," came a small voice.
Geet thanked God as small smile played on her lips. She turned on the light and then saw her. The little girl was dressed in a pair of overalls and a purple shirt. Her hair was tied in uneven pigtails, and she had on some black shoes. The little girls looked at Geet with surprise and relief in her red rimmed eyes. She sat on the floor, in the corner next to a towel rack.
"Well hello there," Geet said as she sat in front of the little girl.
Geet was surprised when the tiny body came hurtling at her. She wrapped her little arms right around Geet and cried.
"Shh…it's ok sweetie," Geet said as she stroked the girls back.
Geet sat with the girl in her arms for a few minutes. The little girl babbled on and on about how scared she was because it was getting dark and she couldn't reach for the light and she was too scared to move. It was only when the girls grip loosened that Geet too let go. The girl pulled out and sat quietly in front of Geet.
"I'm Geet," Geet said introducing herself. "What's your name?"
"Naintara," she said.
"That's pretty," Geet said.
She cringed at the fact that she had to lie to the little girl. While the name wasn't all that bad – what kind of parent names their child Naintara? That's just opening her up to a life time of teasing and torture. Geet gathered that the little girl agreed because she made a face.
"I don't like it," she said as she crossed her arms across her chest. "It sounds so…old. I wanna change it"
Geet couldn't help but giggle.
"How about we give you a special nickname?" Geet asked.
That caught the little girl's attention as she looked up at Geet with wide eyes.
"Nickname?" she asked.
"Yeah…like……………how about…Naina?" Geet offered.
The girl seemed to ponder it for a minute before a smile spread across her face.
"I like it," she said. "Thank you!"
That earned Geet another hug.
"How about we go back inside," Geet said.
Instantly the girl pulled back and sat back in the corner.
"No," she said adamantly.
"Why not sweetie? What happened?" Geet asked.
"I'm mad at Bhai," Naina said.
"What did he do?" Geet asked.
Instantly tears filled the little girls eyes again.
"He…he said that Mom and Papa won't come to my birthday dinner because they don't love me," the girl cried.
Geet had to fight the urge she had to yell at the moment. What was wrong with the man?
Who tells a little girl that her parents don't love her?
"Of course your Mom and Papa love you," Geet said. "It's just that your Bhai loves you so much he wants everyone to love you the way he does."
"Really?" Naina asked.
Geet simply nodded her head.
"He just wants everyone to love you so much that they are never away from you. I know that doesn't happen with your Mom and Papa, but that doesn't mean they don't love you," Geet said.
"That's what I told Bhai. But he still said they don't love me," Naina said, her voice cracking.
"Your Bhai is crazy, what does he know?" Geet asked. "Girls are always smarter than boys when it comes to love any way."
"Really?" Naina asked.
"Really," Geet agreed.
That earned her a smile.
"So Mom and Papa might come for my birthday dinner?" Naina asked, looking at Geet hopefully.
"Well when is your birthday?" Geet asked.
"Today," Naina said.
Geet suddenly fell speechless.
What am I supposed to say now?
"Your birthday is today, and you are in here by yourself?" Geet asked. "No no, that's not fair."
Geet got to her feet and dusted off her hands.
"Let's go get you cleaned up so you can have a nice birthday dinner with your Bhai," Geet said.
The girl smiled and rose to her feet taking Geet's hand.
"Will you stay for dinner?" she asked.
"I'd love to," Geet replied with a smile.
There was a skip in Naina's step as they walked back towards the house. They were almost at the door when a thought occurred to Geet. She stopped and kneeled down in front of Naina.
"Remember how we talked about how much your Bhai loves you?" she asked. "And about how girls are smarter when it comes to love?"
"Uh huh," Naina said as she nodded her head.
"Well, when we go inside, your brother might yell at you a little asking things like 'where have you been' and 'why did you leave'…things like that," Geet said. "But don't take it to heart, he's just really worried about you and he loves you so much. When he saw that you were gone he just got so scared."
"Haw…Bhai got scared?" Naina asked, her eyes wide with shock. "But he's Bhai…he doesn't get scared."
Geet chuckled slightly.
"I know, but he loves you so much…he can't live without you," Geet said.
"Oh," Naina said.
As they walked through the doors of the main entrance, Geet called out to Maan.
"Maan, you have a visitor," she said.
Maan peeked into the hall from the living room and when his eyes settled on Naina, his body nearly went limp with relief. He rushed over and scooped up Naina in his arms. Geet stood silently as he held her for a few minutes.
When he finally put her on the floor and kneeled in front of her he yelled, "Where have you been!? Why did you leave!? Do you have any idea how worried I've been!?"
Naina simply looked at Geet and the two of them giggled, which caused Maan to frown.
"What's so funny?" Maan asked as he looked up at Geet.
Before Geet could answer, Naina wrapped her arms around Maan's neck and squeezed him tight.
"I love you too Bhai," she said.
Geet fought hard to not laugh at the expression on Maan's face.
"Why don't you go upstairs sweetie, get cleaned up for dinner," Geet said.
"You're still staying right?" Naina asked.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Geet said.
Naina ran off towards her room as Geet couldn't help but smile on. When Naina disappeared upstairs, Geet turned to Maan who was looking at her utterly confused.
"You two…bonded," Maan said, trying hard to find a word that fit.
"We sure did," Geet said, "She's adorable."
"Okay…" Maan said, rather oddly. "I didn't want you to meet her like this. I wanted to introduce you to each other."
"Don't worry," Geet said as she wrapped an arm through his, "We did ok."
Maan looked at her adoringly and said "I love you."
"Me too," Geet said just before he leaned down and kissed her.
Then suddenly, Geet remembered what Naina had told her about what Maan said. She pulled out of his embrace and smacked him hard on the arm.
"Ow! What was that for?" Maan whined.
"What kind of person tells a little girl her parents don't love her?" Geet asked.
Instantly Maan's demeanor changed.
"They don't," he said.
"Of course they do…just maybe not the way that you expect them to," Geet argued. "Even if they don't, who are you to break her heart?"
"I didn't…" Maan began.
It was then that he realized the enormity of what he'd said to his sister.
"You can be such an idiot sometimes Maan Singh Khurana," Geet said. "Now shut your mouth. We have a party to get ready for."
"Party? What party?" Maan asked as he followed Geet down the hall.
"It's your sisters birthday…don't you have a party planned?" Geet asked.
"Well…no…" Maan said.
Geet was horrified as Maan told her that he simply was going to have dinner with her, give her the presents and they'd call it a night – no cake, no party, no celebration.
Geet's hands were just itching to smack him, but she had to remember he as a man and didn't know any better. Instead, she took her frustration and devoted all her time to putting together a party. Geet along with the Khurana staff managed to buy decorations and get them up in just under an hour. Maan had been sent to get a cake for the party and to pick up a cartoon for them to watch. While Maan had planned a serious five course dinner, Geet trashed that plan and instead ordered some pizza, salad and chicken for a fun, more kid friendly dinner.
Upstairs, Geet had made sure Naina took a shower. Then she helped her pick out a pretty pink dress and helped with her hair. She made Naina promise that she'd stay in her play room until Geet called for her.
About an hour and half after they had started getting everything together, Naina was allowed back down. The expression of surprise and joy was evident in her eyes and her voice.
"Happy 8th Birthday Naintara," Maan said.
"It's Naina," both Geet and Naina answered.
"Huh?" Maan asked.
Geet went on to explain the new nickname.
"Happy Birthday Naina," Geet said as she handed her a single pink rose.
"Thank you," she said as she threw herself at Geet. "I love you."
"I love you too sweetie," Geet said.
Although they'd only met just hours ago, Geet already knew she loved the little girl who was the center of Maan's world.
As they sat in front of the TV eating pizza and waiting for the movie to start, Maan asked them a question.
"What were you two laughing about before?" Maan asked.
"When?" Geet asked.
"After you brought Naintara…I mean…Naina back," Maan said.
"Cuz she knew that you were going to y…" Naina began but Geet shushed her.
"We are not telling because it's a secret," she said with a wink.
"A secret?" both Naina and Maan asked.
"Yes," Geet said. "A secret between girlfriends. Right girlfriend?"
Geet looked at Naina who was looking back at her with big eyes.
"Right girlfriend," Naina said as she smiled at Geet.
Geet knew Maan was looking at her partly in awe and partly in confusion, but she paid no attention, instead she focused on 'The Little Mermaid' as it began to play.
--------Present--------
Geet smiled as she remembered that since that night, Naina had called her 'GG' for Girlfriend Geet. It was the nickname Naina had given to her.
It was when she felt Naina pull away that Geet came back to reality.
"Are you ok?" Geet asked as she handed Naina tissues.
Naina shook her head as she wiped her eyes and nose.
"I will be," she said.
Geet didn't want to waste time or make small talk.
"He's here," she said simply.
She heard Naina sigh.
"He wants to see you," Geet said.
"Not yet, I'm not ready to see him yet," Naina said.
Geet simply shook her head. She wasn't going to fight Naina on this.
"He wants answers. I have to tell him something," Geet said.
Instantly Naina grabbed Geet's hand with fear in her eyes.
"He can't know…he just can't know," she pleaded.
"But…" Geet began.
"Please…not yet…" Naina begged.
"Okay…when you're ready," Geet assured.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Maan was beside himself with worry and frustration, because he had no idea what was going on. All he knew was that he was at the hospital where his baby sister was admitted. That's it, he knew nothing more.
What could have happened to her? Was she hurt? Was it an accident? What!?
Dr. Mehta hadn't been back to see Maan since he left him in the conference room. Every time he asked the nurse to page the doctor she said he was in emergency surgery and would be with Maan as soon as he could.
"If you could please tell me what room my sister, Naintara Khurana, is in I'll be out of your way," Maan said again.
"Please have a seat sir, Dr. Mehta will be with you as soon as he can," the older looking nurse said.
Enough is enough!
He knew that the nurse was avoiding him but Maan didn't know why. At this point, he didn't have the patience to figure out why either.
"That's it," Maan roared as she stepped away from the desk, "I don't care what you people say. I'm going to see my sister."
His veins were pumping his burning blood as he turned a deaf ear to the nurse who called after him. But then, he stopped in his tracks and his blood ran cold.
"No, you're not," her voice called.
He didn't have to turn to see who it was – he already knew.
He stood still for a few seconds before he turned and when he did he came face to face with her. She stood only a few feet away from him, and just like it always did, her beauty took his breath away. Even without a smidge of makeup, hair tied back and dressed in scrubs, she looked as beautiful as ever. More mature, sure, but beautiful nonetheless.
There she stood – his Geet.
No! She's not your Geet anymore.
Maan's heart shattered for the second time in two hours. Of course he hadnt forgotten that he'd seen her – his Geet – when he had come. But for a second, just a second he'd forgotten who she'd become. She wasn't just Geet Handa any more, she was Dr. Geet Handa.
He didn't know what caused him more grief – his sister being in the hospital or the girl he'd once loved with his heart and soul accomplishing her life's ambition?
okay me back... had to come back for this one... so i dont have that many parts pending...😆
