Sweet Sixteen
When Geet walked into the office, she expected the rumour mills to be turning at super-fast speed. She wasn't disappointed-whispers started flying across the room faster than the speed of light. Evidently Sasha had definitely kept her trap shut-in front of Maan at least.
Geet sat down at her usual table and concentrated on the files on her desk till they started looking blurred. Suddenly the phone rang and she jumped up.
She went into Maan's office with the file he had asked her and suddenly the entire Khurana family was in front of her and shouting abuses, and Maan's face was meta-morphing into that of a guy who looked like a cross between Dev and Daarji....
And then she woke up, covered in sweat.
She swallowed the lump in her throat for what seemed like the thousandth time and then went into the bathroom to freshen herself. When she came out, she saw an expensive sari laid on the bed with what seemed to be gold embroidery on the fringes and diamonds stuck on it. She looked up to see Dadimaa's emotionless face.
"You are my daughter-in-law now, so I expect you to dress like a married woman."
"But-" Geet started. "No buts. The mangalsutra and sindoor are lying in the drawer."
"Oh god am I in some saas-bahu serial?" she wondered to herself.
"What?" asked Dadi, narrowing her eyes.
Geet nodded her head like a docile bahu and felt a chill go through her, making goosebumps rise on her arm. She really was the Khurana bahu now.
As Maan was passing by to the staircase, he saw Geet in front of the mirror, putting on a pair of diamond earrings. She seemed to be having a difficulty in doing so because her hair kept coming in the middle.
As if in a trance, he walked into the room, stood behind Geet and slowly pushed the hair away, leaving her neck exposed. Feeling like she had been transported from a soap opera into a Mills and Boons novel she put on the earrings.
Then suddenly Dadimaa shouted 'Maan!!" and he jumped back. He raced out of the room before Geet could thank him.
In the Mercedes while going to office, Geet concentrated on some of the files he had handed her in order to avoid the strange look in his eye. As soon as they reached the main building of Khurana Constructions, he stepped out first, and then in a random burst of chivalry, he pulled her gently out of the car.
They walked into office together, and rather than spreading the rumours the employees were speechless. They had clearly been informed by Tasha's continuously open mouth that the marriage had been broken and Geet would be kicked out. So what was this?
Sasha fumed in fury. She thought she had caught two birds in her hand-the victory of Geet and Maan's broken marriage, and the victory of her promotion. She had already lost the first, and unknown to her, she was very close to losing the second.
Geet sat down at her usual table, and then the grinning face of Adi and Pinky appeared.
"Geet!!" the bubbly Pinky exclaimed. "Just because the shaadi is over, doesn't mean the celebrations have to stop."
"What do you mean?" asked Geet.
"We've decided we should have an after-marriage party. Then the honeymoon. And then when you'll come back, the baby shower."
"I don't understand," she said confused.
"Geet!" called out Maan. "Yes sir!" she said obediently. Adi scrunched up his nose. Who called her husband sir?
"I want the Khanna file," he said.
"Which Khanna?"
"You should know"
"Akdoo," Geet thought, "I'll teach him a lesson." And then the Geet express chugged out of Geet Land to that of Maan Singh Khurana.
"But there are so many Khannas in the world," she blabbered. "Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Akshaye Khanna-"
"What?" asked Maan.
"Rahul Khanna-" and then she started to chuckle, which turned into a full-blown laughter outburst. And the frown on his face slowly relaxed till he began to relax too.
It looked like he had taken a psychedelic drug, to be honest.
"So you're back to your ways," he said, regaining his stern composure.
"Sir, be clear in what you say na then?" she said, giggling.
"Okay fine-I'm being clear-being my wife doesn't give you the right to do whatever you want."
Maan was on the verge of confessing his attraction for Geet. Had not he himself said it was a fake marriage?
