CHAPTER 11

~ENVY~

Jealousy

It all got settled quickly, Sujal and Kashish went into the sick room and the Sujal did what he had to. I had managed to keep my stomach when I had worked with Armaan, but I was finding my limits to go overlook a vampire blood exchange ritual. Would David go mad? None of us could say… We would find out when morning will come for now, there were other mysteries to solve. Moreover like just one big mystery actually- Armaan.

I could feel his eyes on me whenever he looked my way. I was too tired to really analyze why I was so attuned to him.

After the vampire came out all of us went to the dining room, ate without thought and then assembled in the drawing room. I could see everyone' curiosity bursting to be satisfied. I saw all eyes trained on me to satisfy this need. Why me? Coz Armaan would answer only me by silent understanding of all present.

I wished not everyone was here. I wished I could talk to Armaan alone. I wished we just didn't need to have this talk at all.

"So how was David Mr. Grewal?", I asked hoping o divert everyone's attention from Armaan.. futile attempt I know..

"We will know by morning." Sujal answered looking hardly interested. He really didn't care what Armaan was or how he knew all he knew. He was only staying to get info to save everyone and kill the monster. But Kashish and Kripa wanted the dig I could see it in their eyes.

I sat looking around trying to postpone the questioning.. But Angad always had little patience.

Angad said to Armaan, "How did you know to cure David? How do you know so much about different species?"

Armaan didn't look ruffled at all, I could sense his steely resolve, he would tell what he wanted to and the rest… we couldn't take out of him even with a crowbar.

"How do you know about vampire and werewolf Angad? Maybe we had same teachers…?"

"How?… I didn't at first… I have lived a long…. -long time believing in supernatural so their existence wasn't a shock. I didn't have a teacher, who was yours?"

"Would you believe me if I say god? No?… So you didn't recognize them upon meeting them huh….?" Armaan openly baited Angad, " You also didn't go mad when you exchanged vampire blood.. Would you tell me why?" Armaan spoke directly to Angad, but his whole attention was on me. He would know if I would even move a muscle. It was only fair for him to suspect something… "No, you won't tell me? Then don't expect me to tell you stuff either." Armaan nicely put Angad in his place. Nice and polite.

"Well said. Now since some topics are off-limits, would you please tell you all you can instead of playing 20 questions?" Kashish spoke before Angad could get angry.

I felt Armaan's confusion at the statement though… He doesn't know what 20 questions is?!!...and then Armaan started speaking and he spoke unintrupted for a long time.

Armaan told us about creatures called hell demons. They came from hell in attempt to enter heaven or even earth. They were stopped and kept from doing so through some heavenly intervention. The wounds inflicted and the description of creature attack, led him to believe that our enemy was hell monster. It can twist light around itself a little to disappear, but harsh light, smoke and good eyes can pinpoint his location easy. It bled blue and its body rapidly disintegrates after dying. They are very powerful, more powerful than any species known, also faster than humans but not vampires. To kill them either special sword like Armaan's knife had to be used or rip it to pieces and burn the parts.

We all listened spellbound and shocked, but what he said next finally sent a spike of fear in all of us.

"It would be easy to handle them if they weren't so darn evolvable.. They need a month or two in new environment and to observe then they change… they can change their shape and form so… Well this is bad… If it's been here on earth for say 6 months… it could be looking like any damn human and walk around in broad sunlight."

Blood drained out of Kripa's and Angad's faces for they had had a personal encounter with this kind of monster weeks before their marriage. An encounter in which I had almost lost my dear brother to heaven, it had been Sujal's vampiric blood letting which had saved his life then.

"So how do you catch it?" I spoke calmly, oddly me, vampire and Armaan were the only one completely calm. Sujal was powerful enough not to be afraid and flustered and for me… I knew that Armaan.. Well this is silly but Armaan's presence makes me feel as if even a gunman in the room can hurt me.

"I don't really know.. I mean.. Up there we knew.. I mean.." Armaan stopped to take deep breath.. He had slipped up on his words.. Up where? Who is we? I caught the slip like everyone else and allowed it to pass. How did Armaan know so much about these things.. He had been fighting these things… and this fight happened according to Armaan somewhere in heaven, so up there is… NO!

"What I mean is that. They aren't that common… Look here's how it happens ok. They try and press forward through frission in heaven which are closest to well hell. Even if they change form a look like heavenly being their stench and intent is caught and they are taken care of. If one manages to escape then they generally go towards deeper in heaven.. Now they are on earth and on earth well… I don't know what would attract them here… up there, its power.. Here well I don't know… maybe we look around for news of destruction and murder, where David had been and find some sort of trail…" Armaan shrugged and looked ready to bolt. He couldn't hide the fact that he knew a lot about the demon but not about how it went on earth.. He didn't even know what 20 questions is… he always acted a bit strange… always referred humans as specie different from him…. He is from… oh god! On no! Oh god! No! He can't be! Not one of those cruel mind reading, self righteous angels!! NO!

Of all the things and people he could be, why did he have to be the most heartless and cruel one? Why? Is this somehow a continuation of my punishment? To send me a person who I finally like and then take him away to teach me a lesson?

I tried to shield my thoughts and feelings. But we were too open and even without touching I saw him turn to look at me, feel my revulsion, hate, dread and disappointment. Why him?! Why not anyone else? Why do I deserve this?!!!

I managed to keep my hands from pulling out my hair and my eyes from getting wet. No one could know that I had been to place where he came from. And this isn't about me. Human lives were in danger and for one time when I want to feel selfish I don't have the right to do so. So I will control myself. Control Ridhima.. have been doing it for last soo many decades few more hours should come easily.

"So it means that you are from…" Angad looked at Armaan as if he was an alien from outer space and Armaan continued to plead me with his eyes, ignoring everyone else.. What was he sorry about? Did he know I had been there? Was he sorry about hiding this important detail from me? Or sorry that he was going to break my trust and leave me now?

"It doesn't matter where he is from. He is here and he knows what will help us" Sujal said trying to resolve more pressing matters first.. See? Learn from the vampire. He is putting others first!

"Not too worried about your soul are you vampire?" Angad tried to bait Sujal, something which would never happen. Sujal ignored him and asked.

"Armaan. You said power attracted them… umm heavenly power like thing I guess? So what human power.. Say powerful human attract them maybe? Or maybe things humans consider powerful.. like money?.. If they are adapting their thinking too"

Armaan gave me last apologetic look, then turned to ignore Angad and look surprised at Sujal. I was as surprised as him at sujal's idea but I didn't really care. Even after all the self lecturing what I really wanted was to silently wallow in my misery.

C'mon Ridhima!! Show some spine. So what he did? I could take Angad almost dying calmly. I can surely behave reasonably now too! I berated myself and rose from the chair I was sitting in. I needed control and it would never happen around Armaan.

"I'll go and check net.. See if there are any patterns.. Please let me know if David wakes up." I left before I could blurt more or anyone could stop me.

I did found patterns.. Or I did find that there were patterns which I didn't understand. The demon was killing.. And it wasn't moving any place particular.. It had doubled back on it's route and it wasn't going around in circle either.. It seemed as if it went where it sensed something and some of the places it had visited were lower than dumps, not at all filled with human interpretation of power. Even the victim looked normal, not over developed strong individuals.. I rubbed my eyes to ease the strain. No one had bothered to disturb me since I had walked out of the meeting.

I stood and stretched my sore muscles and then hit the print button on the victims name list I had composed.16 in all. Over last 8 months. That was the number I was completely sure of, there of course may have been others who weren't reported or I couldn't find out about.

Gathering the pages I took a deep breath. Now isn't the time to wonder about Armaan and his origins. My time out had restored some of my control. And then I knew it in my bones that when this all is over, I would get as much time as I want interrogating Armaan and he would answer all my questions without evasion!

I walked back to the drawing room we had been using and stopped dead.

What a s***!! How dare she sit so close to him! Oh !! OOH!!!! Now she is flirting and laughing!!! She touched his shoulder!!

I knew the exact moment my control broke along with my shields as Armaan turned his head to look at me at that moment. All lines of laughter and flirting gone from his face. He felt my hot burning anger and my raging jealousy. He looked surprised and confused. Of course he can't understand what a woman feels which brings me around to the fact that why was I jealous?! I don't like him that way. A few hours ago I was close to hating him for his origins.

With that thought firm in place I schooled my face to look amicable and kept my eyes firmly away from Armaan. That's when I noticed another man who looked none too happy with Armaan and the hussy little woman getting cozy. He looked angry enough to hurt someone and perhaps I was good enough distraction for him.

"Hello. I am Maan. Er.. Sujal's friend. You must be the doctor." He said getting up and offering me a hand. I shook his hand and managed a polite smile, although this time I felt Armaan's gaze burning my body. Caution I felt caution coming off him and realized that Maan was not human but a vampire.. Ohh another vampire.. Great!

"I am not a doctor actually just a veterinarian…. I know what everyone is so… I get invited to treat everyone." I shrugged and the vampire grinned. Unlike Sujal he was more.. Easygoing.. Human like. I always thought it would break Sujal's teeth if he had to smile but this vampire acted just like a human. So maybe not all vampires are cold..

"Well you are not always exactly treating humans either so your profession is useful I guess.. And let me tell you Ms Ridhima.. When we get hungry we are but little different from animals." He smiled broadly at that I could see his fangs. Belatedly I realized that he was slightly flirting with me as he was still holding my hand.

Never having been in such a situation before, I stood dumbly and stared at his fangs which made him laugh hard with all his pearly whites on full display now.

"Oh Maan stop tormenting her! You'll scare her away! I am sorry, he just likes to make people uncomfortable when he isn't in a good mood. I am Geet his wife. Nice meeting you." The little hussy who had been flirting with Armaan attached herself to the vampire and extended her hand. To me it looked like she just wanted her fingers in all the pies, Maan, Armaan… pretty sure Angad and Sujal were on her to do list too.

The vampire let go of my hand so I could shake hands with his wife. Both were mad of course!

"I didn't know you were friends with Armaan." Geet beamed vigorously pumped my hand, "he is such a nice man."

"And I didn't know you were friends with Armaan." Maan said acidly to Geet, taking words and emotions right out of my mind.

"Oh I already told you didn't I? Armaan saved my life the day I met you. I wouldn't have been alive if not for him!"

And even that gives you no excuse to fall all over him when you are married! I wanted to shout but managed to keep hold of my tongue, while my emotions were having a field day with my heart and Armaan's brain.

"I see." Not at all! "Well it's good to have more… Help. Um where is everyone else?" I asked and stepped away from the weird couple to go sit on the single sofa. The vampire too resumed his seat and this time his wife went with him but not before winking at Armaan. If I could control the demon I would gladly lose it on her.

Armaan looked quite shock at the violent nature my thoughts were taking but kept away from me too.

"I think the wolf and her mate are looking after the patient and Sujal was… his control was fraying a bit so… He's resting with his Rwhal-Msdr"

I didn't even want to know what that last word meant or what exactly was the vampire doing in private. Thankfully I didn't have to coz next moment Sujal made his entrance guess he wasn't that fatigued..

"Maan. Geet. You will stay here in the sunlight." Sujal stated.

Question: where do these fit in the royal court?

Where..Where…where..

The royal ally.. Another ruler but of smaller kingdom.. Mainly trade alliance.. But their company in royal court is tolerated in good humor. Came the reply and it wasn't my thought. My eyes moved on their own and saw Armaan grin at me and my lips smiled on their own too.

Before I could make a bigger fool of myself in front of Armaan thankfully Sujal called me to attend.

"Ridhima did you find anything?"

"Yes.. Here's the list of victim names which I am sure were killed by this demon creature." I said handing out the list and its copies to all the people and non- humans present. "I didn't find pattern in the places where they were killed nor a certain direction.. So maybe it's just randomly killing.."

"Or the victims are drawing it to them.." Sujal finished and I could definitely see a scowl working up on his face. If he was showing emotions and so was I then I can safely assume that things have gone to hell.

"Umm Maan.. Aren't three of the names here our client?" Geet spoke looking very worried now you see it not the time to flirt?!

"It is. Also… this guy Richard… Sujal.. Call your wolf I think he was alpha trainer… this is a-" Maan stopped in mid sentence and his frown turned into a worried look. He had figured something out and he was darting glances at me and Armaan.

"They are ok. Do continue Maan."

"None of the victims I think was human. Or atleast a human removed from our supernatural society… There are.. feys, one harpy, wolfs, weres on this list… God I don't know who else Sujal.. Some are my clients… and fey die so easily! I never suspected.."

"So it is powerful creatures after all." Armaan muttered, Maan asked what he meant. When Armaan explained our theory. Maan looked truly worried now.

"You know Sujal.. You r… your aura is no less in comparison to those people. They were my clients coz they wanted to hide their aura from the world. All of them more powerful than the average were, fey or vampire. This is bad… What does it, this demon hope to achieve by doing this…"

Now that, none of us had thought about. Que to look at Armaan.

"I don't know.. We never had this type of power before but.. I think that… No.. That would be horrible thing to happen… NO… This demon must be destroyed now!" Armaan got up and started pacing. I lowered my mental shield to read him but he wasn't letting anything out. Whatever he had concluded was much worse than what had occurred.

Armaan may have blocked me but then, Sujal had some abilities of his own, "c'mon Armaan it can't possibly believe it can rule the earth! That's absurd. Yet if it consumes all that power then.." Sujal said after reading something more from Armaan's mind.

Now I really didn't care about shielding my thoughts and emotions with so many mind readers present. I was too busy not hyperventilating and blowing a fuse. I was scared. So scared I could hardly breathe. Angad was powerful. So he was attacked… It could come here again and… I looked around the room and saw only powerful supernatural people or human who lived so close to them. The whole bloody bunch of royals were facing this deadly force and none of us were safe. I didn't have any combat skills like all the people present! I can't even kill a chicken!

I felt Armaan draw close to me and place his hands on my shoulders. I would die before I would let anyone put a scratch on you Ridhima. No one is going to touch you. No demon and no angel!

"What?" I said out loud coz Armaan had moved away after the psychic message and it couldn't have been jealousy Armaan feltd felt when he had mentioned angel.

He looked fierce and looked ready to kill. Ok.. So I am safe from this demon.. But what did he mean about angel? He knows. He definitely knows! He is from there of course he knows. He is not jealous just angry. I am reading him wrong.

"What, what? Ridhima is something wrong?" Sujal asked me while I mutely stared at Armaan, lost in my thoughts.

"What are we going to do about this?" I improvised on my question.

"We hunt it down."Maan pitched in getting as worked up as Armaan.

"Yes we will. Geet you will stay here with Kashish and Ridhima. Maan go see to transport and other needs please. Armaan we need your input and frankly I don't care if you dropped from heaven." Got to admire Sujal for never dilly dallying.

Armaan raised his brows but nodded his head. Not deny Sujal's claim.

"I'll go with you. Kripa can stay here and guard-" Angad had arrived and so had his wife.

"I am not leaving you alone Angad. Mr. Sujal I would like to come to!" Angad and Kripa entered as soon as Maan left.

"Who is going where?" Kashish came in seconds later.

Before Sujal could calm down anyone we all heard a loud piercing scream.

All r gud ppl actually....they hav their secrets...they hav their insecurities....their own space which they dont like to be intruded.....in fact I love all the characters actually....all is very very gud...
