UPDATE 7
Sid took a deep breath and turned the knob. As he stepped over the threshold he was mentally preparing himself for what he was going to have tell Riddhima. He looked up his eyes searching for what his heart had already known that Riddhima was there waiting for him. But before his eyes could zone in on her like he always did he was distracted by the transformation his foyer had undergone. The lights had been dimmed and before him stood two rows of red candles leading to the main doorway where their living room stood. And on the path lay thousands of white rose petals. But he only gave these things a quick glance for his eyes were immediately drawn to the woman who stood at the end of the path surrounded by a half circle of tall candles. His feet automatically started moving him towards her and his heart started beating faster and became lighter as he got closer to her. There she stood with her eyes sparkling, a wide grin on her face that clearly spoke "gotch ya". He couldn't take his eyes off her face, until she took her arms and passed them in front of her as if she were showcasing herself. Then his eyes automatically followed the path her arms took and he took note of her long slender neck adorned with only the mangalsutra in his name. Then his eyes followed the line of her neck to her shoulders, which were covered with a red silk cover up. Immediately his heart picked up. Then she shrugged her shoulders and the wrap fell off. And all that was left behind was her smooth silky shoulder spilt in the middle by a thin ribbon of red silk. Sid's eyes automatically skipped over to the other shoulder where he saw the same thing. As he continued the path downwards he realized that Riddhima was wearing a body hugging red silk dress that was not really a dress, but fancy lingerie. Upon seeing this Sid's heart literally skipped a beat.
There stood in front of him the love of his life, the most beautiful woman in the universe in a daring bold outfit. Just for him. There was nothing Sid could say or do. Then as he stood there, only a foot away, staring at his wife he realized that the dress Ridz was wearing was in fact the dress he had given to her that night when he surprised her at the hospital and they got busted by the hidden cameras. He had realized immediately upon gifting it to her that their relationship wasn't ready for that step yet, but it was too late. He had thought that she had gotten rid of the dress. But seeing it before him today he was glad she hadn't. It was most definitely worth the wait. His arms automatically started reaching out towards her.
Ridz couldn't help but tease Sid a little more so she stepped aside to avoid his arms and said, "Mr. Siddhant Modi. You are 10 minutes late. That means that you will get a punishment. Your punishment is you can look, but you can't touch." And with those words she turned away from Sid, her dress twirled out with her spin, and she walked towards the dinner table. As she walked away her face held a slanted sly smile for she knew her husband had no choice but to follow. His mind and his heart would force him to. Sid's arms dropped as he started to realize what kind of slow torture his wife had planned for him. As he obediently followed Ridz towards the dinner table his eyes watched the gently sway of her hips and he couldn't stop the smile from forming on his lips.
Ridz reached the table she sat down with the grace of queen and Sid immediately took is cue and sat down across from her. As they sat face to face their eyes locked and Ridz forgot what she was going to do. The two just sat and stared into each other's eyes, into each other's souls. After a few minutes the wind from the window blew and it jerked Ridz out of the trance that only her husband seemed to be able to put her in. She stood up and tried to shake off the disorientation and distracted herself by starting to unveil the dishes that sat on the table. The first one she lifted was red chawal and rice to which Sid could only grin for not only was it his favorite dish, but it held very special memories too. The second one held pasta to which he could only lift his laughing eyes to Ridz's. For they both knew why she had made it. It was because that was all they had to eat for about a week six months ago when Ridz had gotten sick and Sid had to make all the food. Poor Sid was great at cooking pasta but not much else. And with Ridz bedridden with a nasty infection Sid had refused to let anyone else into the house for fear of it spreading and thus the two were stuck in isolation for a week. It was great at first they got to spend some quality time alone, but after about three days it became batameez, cudhail and pasta. Then as Ridz unveiled the third and final dish she couldn't keep her giggles in. Upon seeing the burgers inside Sid burst out laughing. The two just sat there cracking up for a good five minutes. Finally after a lot of breath catching and calming down, Sid said, "So, you remembered huh? I'm never going to be able to live that down am I?"
Ridz sat down in the chair next to Sid's and said, "Of course not! Even when we are old and watching our grandkids playing by our swing out front I will not forget it. I mean what wife would ever forget something like that?" Sid responded with feigned seriousness, "A loving one?". To this Ridz simply gave him a stern look and recalled for him his past transgression, "Siddhant, it was my first birthday not only as a wife but with you and what did you do? You forgot it! In fact, you forgot it so bad that when you finally did remember it not only the cake shops, but all the shops were closed. So you, being you of course, got the brilliant idea to go to McDonald's to get me a burger!?!" Sid simply looked back at her with a chagrined face. But Ridz was on a roll and she wasn't going to stop till the whole story was out. "Then you come home with one half wilted white rose and one red rose and present them to me as though they were two dozen roses. I mean why the heck did you only get two?? Why not one? Or a ton?" Sid starts to defend himself, "It's the thought that counts..." But Ridz interrupts him, "THE THOUGHT!!! Siddhant you didn't have the thought!! That's why you had to go run last minute and get it!!!" Sid knows a losing battle when it's coming, especially one led by his wife, so he replies with, "Yes, Dear. You are correct."
But Ridz would not be placated that easily. Just thinking about that night makes her blood boil. She still couldn't believe the ridiculousness of Sid that night.
There she was waiting all day for him to come up to her and wish her Happy birthday and to give her a gift, flowers or even a hug. And what did she get?? Nothing. She waited all morning and all day and got nothing but the brush off. On her birthday. So of course just as she's about to give up and head to bed he walks into the bedroom at 11:55pm the day of her birthday with a smile. I mean can you believe the guy, and he presents her with two wilted roses and says, "My dear wifey, Happy Birthday!!!! I got you the white rose for our friendship and to maintain peace in our relationship and the red one to show you my love for you." He knew the words he was spitting out weren't him at all but rather Armaan's last minute instructions to try and placate Ridz, but he figured with the fire brewing in her eyes they couldn't hurt. Boy was he wrong, it seems his wife knew him better than he thought for right after the words came out she gave him a sardonic smile and took the flowers and tossed them on the nightstand and turned her back towards him. So he thought he'd go with plan B and he pulled his other hand out from behind his back and in it lay a box from McDonald's. Upon seeing the box Ridz got confused. She didn't know what to make of it.
Sid took advantage of her loss of balance and spoke from his heart, "Riddhima cakes and pastries are certainly what you deserve. But unfortunately you didn't marry a Bollywood hero who always gets the gifts and surprises right. You married a simple man from Houston who at most times is clueless to the things around him except for his love for you. After our being together and countless ruined dates and planned events I have learnt that when it comes to you and me the unplanned is often the best. Thus, although this burger may seem last minute to you it is probably for the best because if I had ended up ordering the perfect cake for you that I had wanted to originally with red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting it would have, with my luck, either burned, fell on the ground, or worse fell on you. And if I had planned the surprise romantic birthday dinner for you that I had already in the works then it most likely would have ended up with you going to the emergency room because I some how broke your foot while trying to woo you with my fancy dance moves. So instead, all I have to offer you is something unique and just as delicious I have this burger."
Although Ridz had wanted to smack Sid initially, her heart was no longer in it. For her Sid like always had made wonderful plans but somehow they fell through like it always seemed to for the poor guy. She could see the disappointment and sadness in his eyes for failing on such a big event. So she let the anger die down and gave him a forgiving smile and said, "Okay. Fine I forgive you Sid. But you owe me big time!" To which Sid responded with a sigh of relief. She then quietly watched as he opened the box and started to pull out the burger to feed her. He was so focused on her that he had no clue what was going to come next. Ridz went to take a bite from the burger and then immediately spit it out right into his face. Sid's face was locked in frozen shock over his wife spitting at him. Ridz continued to spit around him and then ran into the kitchen to grab water and began gargling. As the shock started to subside Sid followed her and asked in slight anger, "What the heck?? I thought you understood about the burger. Why did you spit it at me? If you didn't want it, you could have just said NO. You didn't have to pretend to forgive only to spit it at my face!" By the end of Sid's tirade Ridz had finished gargling and she turned towards him with a stern look and said, "What else would you expect me to do? Did you even look at what kind of burger you got? Sid I do NOT eat meat. And you brought me a chicken burger!?!"
Sid's eyes immediately went down to the burger he was holding and upon inspection he realized that his wife was absolutely correct. He simply turned away with his shoulders sagging and sadness in eyes and mumbled to himself, "This was bound to happen. I never get anything right. I can't even give my wife one good gift on her birthday." Upon seeing how heartbroken Sid was on his failure, Ridz followed him and wrapped her arms around from behind and said, "Sid, I don't need fancy gifts or lavish parties. I all I need is you. And the fact that you have spent the past week thinking about me and my birthday is worth more than a diamond. All I've ever wanted is to love someone who loves me just as much. And what did I get? I got someone who loves me more. I will admit this wasn't how I imagined my first birthday with you would go, but as you said nothing ever really goes the way we plan when you and I are together. But as long as we are together nothing else matters."
Upon remembering the words she had spoken to Sid that night Ridz's anger dies down and she looks up at Sid and she too knows that he was thinking about the words she had spoken to him on her birthday. Then after a few seconds they both break out into grins for they recall how ever since that day anytime there was a special day in Ridz's life Sid always brought home a veggie burger for them to celebrate with...
