PART 4

"What?" Geet asked shocked, her eyes turning as big as saucers in her face, which had gone incredibly pale. She was shocked beyond her wits and she hated the fact that the man sitting in front of her was hardly ever wrong.

"The way you are craving achar….I thought you were pregnant" his tone was cold but she saw a small twinkle in his eyes and took a breath to calm herself after reading his eyes that he was just joking.

"I……I just wanted it" she said in a small voice, the color rushing back to her cheeks and embarrassment flooding her features. Maan looked at her without blinking and felt sorry for putting her in such a position.

"Fine ….go ahead and order it" he waves her away and gets back to his files.

"Sir" Geet's soft voice makes him look up at her questioningly.

"What do you want to eat? Thai?" she asks unsure whether he had agreed or not to the food she had demanded.

"Geet" he takes her name irritated, "this is not a party that I will have something different and you will have something different…..just order what you want and get back to work" he snapped and looked back to his files.

Irritated at his high handedness, Geet sticks out her tongue at him but before she can turn away he looks up and catches her in the act and his eyes narrow. Geet hurriedly turns away and snatches the phone which in her hurry falls down with a crash. Maan rolls his eyes in frustration. This girl could not do a single thing without causing a small mishap. She was trouble.

Geet tried to avoid looking at Maan as she knew very well that her stupid action would have surely made him mad. Well there was hardly anything she did right where he was concerned anyways, she shrugged. She sat on her knees to pick up the phone and then decided that it was better to be under the desk and give her order, away from his prying eyes. She dialed the number of the restaurant and placed her order. When she got up from under the table, she met Maan's angry eyes.

"Miss Geet Handa……are you done playing hide and seek under the table?" he asked her sarcastically.

"I…..Um….I thought" she tries to come up with a believable reason as she couldn't tell him that she had just done that to escape his prying eyes. It felt like those eyes could look right into her soul and she hated that.

"I don't care what you think ……now just get back to work" he snapped and she scurried to his side and got busy with work.

Geet's suggestions to some of Maan's questions made him realize how smart the girl was and also how observant. The suggestions were well thought out and made sense.

"What did you study Geet?" he couldn't help asking her and saw her face fall.

"I….I studied till 12^th grade" she replied softly not looking at him. She didn't want to see disappointment cross his face. He was disappointed anyways by everything she did; she didn't feel the need to see it again.

"And what subjects?" he asked.

"Science……and drawing" she replied, turning to face him. She didn't understand why he was asking her these questions and suddenly they made her worry if he had concluded that she wasn't qualified for the job anymore and was thinking of firing her. She stood up quickly, knocking the pen holder over and wringed her hands.

"I….why are you asking me all this?" she asks, her voice worried.

"Calm down Geet…..why do you always have to over react?" Maan orders her and she sits down immediately, now wringing her dupatta.

"You ask me all sorts of questions…you are unpredictable….I don't know when you will get mad at me and throw me out saying you hate this one more thing about me….I try really hard to please you" she tells him looking at him teary eyed and Maan's mouth falls open in surprise. His eyes soften a bit at the young girl's insecurity and he sighs. Since the day he had laid his eyes on her she had looked tensed, insecure and fearful. He was trying hard to solve the mystery called Geet but hadn't been successful as yet.

The only times he had actually seen her happy was in his office. He knew she loved working here and did so with utmost sincerity.

"It's Ok Geet…..stop fretting Ok…..I was just asking you a simple question as your ideas regarding the project are very insightful……and no one is going to throw you put of this company….get it….now breathe" he says and watches her eyes close in relief.

"Thank you sir" she whispers and then a smile lights up her face and she opens her eyes and he notices that they are twinkling with naughtiness.

"You are nice….even if you pretend otherwise" she states in a happy tone but when she sees his eyes harden she apologizes immediately and gets back to work.

"Geet……what kind of drawing did you learn?" Maan throws another question.

"Not construction design….just a lot of portraits and other stuff….but I can learn" she answers and he nods.

"Ok…..I want you to meet with our design team tomorrow since Sasha is not here and share your ideas with them and see how much of it can be incorporated ….ok" he instructs and she nods. There was no way she would ever be able to understand this complex man, she sighed. He blew hot or cold and it was difficult to gauge when he turned hot or when he blew cold.

"Thank you Sir" she thanks him softly. Though Maan hears her thanks he pretends otherwise and keeps his eyes on his file. After a few minutes Maan is distracted by Geet's rumbling stomach and he looks up in surprise.

"Err….am just very hungry" she looks away embarrassed.

"Just call the restaurant again" he advises but as soon as she lifts the phone, their intercom buzzes announcing the arrival of their food. Geet excuses herself to get it and comes back with food and a happy smile.

Maan watches with fascination as she opens each package with a huge smile on her face and smells the food and looks at him excitedly.

"Smells wonderful" she announces and Maan shakes his head. She was such a kid and her enthusiasm was infectious. Though she irritated him and put him on an edge, he still liked having the bubbly Geet, so different from the one he had met in Hoshiyarpur around him.

The very thought stops him in his tracks. What had he just concluded? He liked having her around? He must be losing it. There was no way he liked her……she was irritating, clumsy and too happy for his taste.

"Maan…..what is wrong with you….she doesn't even deserve a thought" he reprimands himself angrily.

"Sir" Geet calls him but watches the expressions change on his face from softness to intense anger.

"Uff……I have no idea what he is mad about again…..I just hope he doesn't throw my food away" she talks to herself under her breath. When she calls him again and he doesn't respond, she walks close to him and gives him a gentle shake which brings him out of his musings. When his eyes meet her hazel inquiring ones, his anger soars.

"Stay away from me Geet" he yells and Geet takes a step back in shock.

"I….food" she points to the food that she had laid on the other side of the table and Maan clamps his anger. He knew it was no fault of hers and he shouldn't have yelled but when it came to this girl, his emotions went haywire.

"So? Eat na then……you were the one who was so hungry" he says rudely and he sees hurt cloud her eyes.

"You are too….maybe if you eat you will feel less angry" she says and he looks at her angrily but she simply walks to the other side and starts piling food on a plate. Maan sits down angrily and starts to rifle through a file. He needed to control his emotions. It was okay for him to like another human being. All girls weren't like Naintara. He rifles his hand through his hair. Now he was thinking like his Dadi. He needed to stop.

Suddenly the file from his hand is snatched and the plate of food appears in front of him.

"What the ….Geet?" he splutters.

"Eat…..you will feel better and it will also give you some more energy to fight with me or yell at me" she jokes and he rolls his eyes.

This girl was incorrigible. She too sits next to him and starts eating.

"Yuuum" Geet goes with each bite and Maan looks at her mesmerized by how she was enjoying her food.

"I love this food…..ummmm" she goes and then takes a big bite of the mirchi ka achaar she had ordered. When she looks up she catches Maan staring at her.

"What?" she asks touching her face as if something was on it. He shakes his head to indicate nothing.

"Mirchi? You love mirchi?" he asks and she nods vigorously.

"Did you taste it?" she asks when he shakes his head to indicate a no, she gets up and gets him some of the achaar.

"Eat sir….you will love it" she tells him. He hated mirchi. He couldn't sand it and here the girl was egging him to eat the achar.

"No thank you" he says.

"Fine….suit yourself….but sachhi sir….you are missing something" she says and goes back to eating.

Food done, Geet takes care of the empty containers while maan sits there wondering how he had enjoyed eating dinner after a long time. Usually he just ate it as a chore, while going through a file or on the phone. Whenever Dadi asked him to give her company, it was a boring affair where he answered her questions and gulped down the food so he could get away from the house and go back to the outhouse.

He looks at Geet and a very small smile crosses his lips. She was so different than any of the girls he had ever met. He concluded that it was just the difference that he found her so refreshing and in someday that too would wear off and he heaved a sigh of relief.

Work finished, Maan tells Geet that he will drop her home and she silently acquiesces. They sit silently on the opposite ends of the car when Maan's cell phone buzzes.

He picks it up to hear the investigator who he had sent to dig information about Geet on the line.

"Anything?" Maan asks.

"Yes sir…..her brother who had tried to kill her is out on bail and looking for her" he tells her and Maan's heart misses a beat.

"I see" he says not wanting Geet to make out anything, "what else?" he asks.

"Well I am trying my best sir….but the people of this village are very tight-lipped and also scared from Brij….but I will keep trying" he promises and after a few more per functionary questions, cuts the line.

Brij was in jail? So she had followed his advice…..he had thought she was spineless but he had been so wrong. So she had revolted against her family and complained to the police. He was proud of her but what he couldn't understand was why they were hell bent upon killing her?

Geet looked at him in deep thought and wondered what he was thinking. She bent forward and asked the driver to switch on some music.

"Madam….sir won't like it" the driver informs her.

"Oh he will….don't worry…who doesn't like music" she ignores the warning and insists the radio being switched on. The driver does so and the melody of a song fills the car and Maan comes out of his thoughts and looks up angrily.

"is it too much to ask for some peace or quiet?" he looks at her angrily. He knew very well whose idea it was as the driver would never do this on his own.

"Music is so soothing….how can you complain?" Geet asks him surprised.

"Then when you reach home, listen to it to your heart's content" he snaps and Geet looks at him angrily.

"Fine…it is your car anyways" she turns her face and looks out of the window, while the driver simply turns off the music.

In a few minutes Geet falls asleep with her head against the window and Maan's eyes soften while looking at her. Worry for her safety lines his face. Brij was looking for her….how was he going to keep her safe he wondered.

They reach her house and he gently shakes her awake. She wakes up and looks at him wonderingly.

"Hi" he says and she gives him a warm smile.

"Hi" she replies in a sleep clouded voice.

"Your house is here" he tells her and she jerks up.

"Slowly Geet" he tells her and she rubs her eyes.

"I…I am sorry" she starts when he lifts his hand to stop her.

"Don't worry about it….go home and rest" he says and she thanks him and leaves. He waits till she enters the house and instructs his driver to take him home. He calls the investigator again.

"I want you to keep an eye on Brij….I need a report of all his movements…..every second….get it" he orders and cuts the call.

He now had to devise a plan to keep her safe of that insane brother of hers would soon find her.
