"You what?" Geet asked, thinking she had misheard or misinterpreted the words coming out of her boss's mouth.
"Look Geet…..I think you heard me the first time….now let's get your prescription" Maan says and starts walking towards the pharmacy.
A stunned Geet looks at his retreating back rooted to the spot with his behavior. She couldn't make head or tales of what was going on and especially why he had done an about face. He was behaving as if everything was normal and she knew that was an act. Why he was acting like that was what she wanted to know.
Geet follows Maan slowly and once they get the medicines, she follows him to the car and quietly takes the seat. All through the ride, Geet contemplates how to ask Maan why he had decided to believe her and why he was going out of the way to actually help her.
"Geet" Maan's sharp voice breaks her out of her reverie.
"Hmm" she asks, looking at him with her beautiful but questioning hazel eyes.
"Where are you lost? I have asked you twice where your house is." Maan asks again, impatience lurking in his dark eyes.
"House……just lets go to the office" Geet replies.
"Geet….it's better that you go home….so just tell me the directions, the last time the driver was driving" Maan tells her sees her bite her lips.
"Geet……directions" Maan snaps and Geet looks at him in defiance.
"Let's go to the office" she replies softly and Maan crunches on the brakes and stops on the corner of the road. Eyes flashing with impatience and anger he turns towards Geet who is looking at him wide eyed.
"Why do you have to argue on everything Geet? I asked you the address give it to me and then rest at home" he says and Geet refuses.
"No….I don't need to and I don't feel like it….as it is there is a lot of pending work in office that needs to be taken care of" but before she can complete her sentence Maan comes a little closer to her and she shifts back, her back hitting the door of the car.
She smelled of baby soap and then Maan realized that the person he had cornered was herself a child but also was carrying one. His own brother's child….the child he refused to own. He took a deep breath to calm himself and moved away.
"Look Geet….the doctor asked you to rest, did she not…..so just obey her orders……moreover, today's events are going to create a problem for you" he tries to explain to her but she interrupts him.
"I was wondering why you did an about face…..now I understand……you have decided to play the sympathy hand……to get rid of me and my unwanted child" Geet's voice broke and tears filled her eyes, which for an unfathomable reason tore at Maan's heart, "why…..why am I getting punished from Brij veerji, Darji, Dev, Naintara and you? I never even wanted to get married……and all I want is a job so I can stand on my own two feet and you…..you want to even snatch that away from me? Just because that creep is your brother?" she questioned him with pain in her eyes.
Without wanting to, his hand rose to wipe the tears away from her cheeks. At his tender touch Geet's eyes snapped to his and she took a sharp breath in. Hearing that noise, Maan retracted his hand suddenly and looked away.
"Look ….stop crying……and also stop making up stories in your head……I am not taking away your job…..all am trying to do is let you rest…..come back to office tomorrow….you will still work for me…get it? Now the address" he asks and Geet gives it to him. He drives her to Pinky's house and comes out with her to escort her to the door.
Geet walks slowly and when she opens the door, he walks in right behind her.
"What…..what are you doing?" she asks incredulous.
"Checking to see if that crazy brother of yours broke in or not" he replies and Geet absorbs his answer.
Could it be possible in any way that Maan Singh Khurana was actually worried about her? "Hell no" her mind replied but her heart refused to believe otherwise.
He had taken her to the hospital, got her checked up, bought medicines, let her retain her job and now was looking for Brij.What exactly was happening she wondered.
"He doesn't know that I live here" she told him softly which didn't go unheard as she saw his back tense.
"He did reach where you worked right? Very soon he will find where you live too…..I am not happy about leaving you here alone…..so am asking for Pinky to come back and then I'll leave" he tells her calls his office and orders Pinky to be sent home immediately.
"Why ?" is what Geet asks him.
"Why what?" he snaps back, taking a seat on the sofa and waiting impatiently for Pinky to arrive.
"Why are you worried about me?" she sits opposite to him.
"You are carrying the Khurana heir….that's why" he replies and she looks at him in amazement.
"You……you….Khurana heir" she repeats his words and he nods.
"What is so shocking….the fact that I believed you or the fact that I accept this child?" he asks humorlessly and she shakes her head.
"Both….but I don't know why you are doing this still…....I mean why are you interested in the child all of a sudden" she asks him.
"Not only me……very soon Dev will be interested in it" he replies back and Geet asks him why.
"For the simple reason that Naintara can't have one" he tells her and she sits back in shock.
"Oh my god" she clasps her hands to her mouth and gets up, her eyes flashing.
"Get out….get out of my house right now" she orders him and Maan's eyes narrow at her tone.
"Why…..I told you I'd leave when Pinky comes back……and what are you over reacting about?" he asks her, without getting up, but his dark eyes piercing into hers. She knew he was holding his temper by a thread but she didn't care. She was raging mad at this two faced man and couldn't believe the level the Khuranas could stoop to.
"Oh please…..stop this drama about caring ok….I completely understand this charade of yours now and I want you to get out now or I will scream……and also …..I won't come to work tomorrow or ever" she tells him and Maan gets up vexed and advances towards her.
"Scream? Are you threatening me? Go ahead and try it then" he stand with his arms folded against his chest, just a breath away from her.
"I am not threatening you Maan Khurana……I will do it…..so get your two faced self out of my house" Geet replies back, refusing to back down.
"Watch your language Geet" he snaps.
"Oh my…..really…..does it not suit you? Two-faced……then why does it pinch so?" she fights back and losing control Maan grabs her by her arms and pulls her close.
"How am I two faced? Answer me Geet, Answer" he yells and throws her away.
"Naintara can't have children, so you are helping me….I know why…..you three…..you want my child…..don't you…..your Khurana heir……but listen to me and listen well….this is just my baby….Geet's……this child is nothing to you Khuranas" Geet yells and suddenly dizziness hits her and she starts swaying.
"Geet" Maan rushes to hold her before she falls and makes her sit on the couch. He gets a glass of water for her and makes her drink it. Geet takes deep breaths and holds her stomach protectively, trying to calm herself for her child's sake.
"Are you ok?" Maan asks her gently and she nods.
"You do know that you have to keep calm don't you….and Geet" Maan gently touches her hand and she looks up at him.
"No one……no one will ever take your child away from you…..that is my promise to you……I won't let Dev or Naintara come near you and if you want I will stay away too but please…..take care of yourself…..this is not good for you" he rubs her hands gently and Geet's shoulders sag and she sags against the couch.
"I don't know who to believe" tears slip out of her eyes.
"I understand…..but if your heart lets you…..please believe me" he says and she opens her eyes to look into those pitch black eyes. She searched for the truth in them and they meet her gaze unwaveringly and his hands tighten their hold around hers.
Geet had been betrayed by everybody she had ever loved. Now this complete stranger was asking her to believe him. Believe that he was not going to let anything happen to her and her baby. How was it even possible? When she had looked into his eyes, she had seen conviction and truth in them. Her heart wanted to believe him but he was the brother of the man who had betrayed her. How and why was he going to be any different from him?
She took a deep breath, "You don't even like me" she said softly and opened her eyes to the sound she had never heard before and had never expected to hear all her life. The sound of his deep throaty laughter.
Maan threw his head back and laughed at the contradiction and innocence that was Geet. Here he was asking her to believe him, trust him to take care of her and her child's safety and she had come up with You don't even like me!!
Geet looked at his magnificent head thrown back and eyes closed in laughter. If she thought he was good looking before, he took her breath away now. His handsome face had lost that stern expression and his features had softened in the act of laughter. He looked young and carefree. His hand was still grasping her hands and now his eyes were looking tenderly at her.
"Well Geet…..neither do you" he replied back, the laughter gone and the old Maan back in his place.
"I have no problem with you Maan…..I always thought you hated me" the innocent child woman replied.
"I don't…..and Geet it's about you and the baby……that is all that matters" he told her and Geet nods.
"I ……I don't know why….I don't know how but I trust you…..I trust that you will take care of us Maan" Geet replies and watches relief wash over his face and he smiles ever so slightly.
"Thank you Geet……and tomorrow there are some papers I want you to sign….and trust me…..I will give you back everything you deserve and what is yours…..believe me and I won't let you down" he told her and the bell rang.
Maan gets up to usher Pinky in and leaves without looking back.
"What happened Geet?" Pinky asks and Geet tells her the gist of her day. Pinky too advises her to rest and the whole night passes with Geet smiling to herself and sleeping peacefully.
Believe me and I won't let you down……that was the promise which started her new day.
Believe me and I won't let you down……this was the promise Maan was going to keep come what may.
