The day had retired, giving way to the night, which was slowly casting darkness over the mohallas of Chandni Chowk. A girl sat at the window of an aged mansion, overlooking the crowded streets. Her eyes bore a distant look....
Maybe his flight had been delayed, but he would surely come. She could wait for him all her life. After all, Nupur & Mayank had been inseparable before he left for England to complete his studies, as per his father's wish. That had been the most difficult day for both. But life did go on. He would call her once in a month or two without fail. Moreover, he had promised to give her the gift himself for her birthday, which was tomorrow.
"Woh zaroor aayega", she repeated for what seemed to be the 500th time. Yes, this was how she had been comforting her chaotic mind since the day had dawned. Her parents had gone to visit their native & would return the day after. So she had been alone & stayed at the Sharmas [Mayank's parents], who were her neighbours all day, but returned home in the evening. Since then, this had been her postion. An old radio at the corner of the room played- "Aayega aayega aayega, aayega aanewala aayega...."
But Nupur's attention was only towards HIS arrival. A sudden thought struck her! He would be so different from how he was 7 years ago, wouldn't he? What if he brought with him a firangi girlfriend? How many would he have dated? Somehow the thought made her jealous! "Stop behaving like a possessive freak Nupur! He's just your best friend! What right do you have to think about him like that?" Deep in such thoughts, she didn't know when she fell asleep, but the only thing she knew was that right now, there was some noise coming from the hall. She was half awake when the noise grew a bit louder. It sounded like footsteps which were approaching her room.
Nupur sat bolt upright & shouted, "Kaun hai?" But now the footsteps seemed to be getting away from her room. Curious & not in the mood to simply wake neighbours up, she stepped out of her bed & tried to walk as soundlessly as possible. The power had gone & she couldn't locate a torch. Perfect! She had no other option than following the footsteps. They seemed to be going towards the terrace now. Good, she would atleast be able to see a bit of the intruder under the moonlight. She was slowly climbing the stairs when the footsteps stopped abruptly! Nupur was scared now. What if the person was lurking near her? She shouted a bit, "Who's there? Tell me or I'll scream!" Finding no answer, she opened her mouth to scream, only to be held back tightly by two firm yet gentle hands. Nupur struggled in vain to get the hands off her. She finally opened her eyes, sensing a flicker of light in front of her & was she shocked!
"Mmmm!" Nupur struggled to get the hands off. "Oh sorry!" The person replied & removed his hand covering her mouth.
"Mayank tum???!!!"
"Nahi! Mera Humsafar!" Mayank replied irritated. Nupur burst out laughing, causing Mayank to get irritated even more."You mean Humshakal?"
"Yeah yeah whatever!"
"I can see that your Hindi has gone down the drain!" She replied, holding her stomach which was paining due to her constant laughing.
"Nupur, you can teach me Hindi later. Now come with me!" Mayank urged.
"But where?"
"Jahan tum...er...better not risk it, just close your eyes & let me lead you."
"But Mayank...." Nupur couldn't speak further as Mayank was already dragging her.
"Now open your eyes!" Mayank commanded her finally.
"Aye aye Sir!" Nupur opened her eyes to see the most beautiful sight! The terrace was filled with candles & red hear-shaped balloons. There was a path filled with rose petals leading to a small table at the centre with a heart-shaped candle on it, embedded on a huge chocolate cake!
"Sorry Nupur, I had to manage only with candles due to the frequent power cuts, but I-" Nupur placed her soft hand on his lips. She was still taking in the splendour of the scene before her. "Thank you Mayank" was she all she was able to utter.
"Wait, it's not finished yet!"Mayank kneeled down in front of her, "Nupur, tum aa gaye ho...umm...er...." But this time Nupur did not laugh. Nor did she speak. She just stood speechless, allowing him to continue.....
"Look Nupur, I'm not good with words. I just wanted to tell you that, how these 7 years have passed without you, I don't know, but I want to spend the rest of my life with you. These 7 years, you may have not literally been beside me, but you have always been in my heart, guiding me, inspiring me. You were the one who taught me to love someone, & that someone is you! I love you Nupur, & wish to be yours for eternity! Will you be mine?" He held out a beautiful ring before her.
A lone tear escaped Nupur's eyes, which Mayank caught in his palm.
"I'm sorry Nupur, I didn't mean to hurt you." Nupur stopped him.
"Yeh toh khushi ke aansu hai buddhu! Yes!" was all she managed to splutter & hugged him tightly!
This night would be etched in her memory forever.....
