Chapter 3
"But I want to stay with you, daddy," Neev pouted.
The man looked down at his son, who was walking slowly next to him, his small hand held in his larger one. They walked through the deserted Francis Downing Street that led to the small school one of his friends had told him about. No'not friends, colleagues. One of his colleagues.
"You have to go to school Neev, don't you want to learn new things?" the man asked gently.
"I already know my aphlabet'"
"Alphabet," the man corrected.
"Yes, and I know my numbers up to one hundred!" Neev beseeched. "I want to stay with you."
The man squeezed the little boy's hand and smiled sadly, "I'm sorry buddy"
"Why can't I stay with Dadi?" he asked.
"Dadi agrees with me that you should go to school, don't you want to make new friends?" the man explained.
"You're my friend, daddy," Neev said stubbornly.
Neev always knew what to say to tug at his heartstrings. My God, he's as manipulative and cunning as his mother. He scorned, thinking of that dreadful woman. He shrugged the thought aside.
The school was located on the outskirts of Mumbai, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city in a secluded corner of the area. The small building looked more like a residential cottage that it did a school, but the sign reading, "Little Tots Education Centre" proved that it was indeed a school.
"Please Daddy?" Neev pleaded once more as he looked at the school with wide eyes. "I don't want you to go to work and leave me here all by myself!"
"You won't be alone Neev, you'll have classmates and a teacher," he replied as he opened the door to the school.
Neev tried to pull back from walking into the school by digging his heels into the ground, but the strong, tall man easily picked him up and carried him.
"That's not fair, daddy, you're stronger than me" Neev uttered sadly.
The man simply ruffled the little devil's hair and kissed his crown. He looked around, hoping to find one of the school personnel. No one was there. The atmosphere and surroundings gave the feeling as if someone had died.
"There's no one here Daddy. Let's go back home now." Neev said quickly and hopefully.
The man laughed a soft, husky laugh and ruffled his son's hair once more. "Here comes someone now, so be polite Neev"
Neev buried his face in his father's shoulder in response.
"Hi there!" A short, vivacious lady strolled out of a back room. "Welcome to Little Tots Education Centre! My name is Sonali Bakshi."
She struck her hand out for the man to shake. "I'm Mayank Sharma," he introduced. "I called you over the phone, wanting to enroll my son for school."
"Awesome!" Sonali said enthusiastically. "Hi there Neev! You are such a cutie-pie!"
Neev buried his head further into Mayank's shoulder.
"He's a bit shy," Mayank explained sheepishly, "And he's mad that I'm putting him in school. Neev, why don't you say hi?"
Neev grunted in response, but didn't lift his head.
Sonali smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Neev. You don't have to be shy here. Everyone is super nice and we all want to be your friend."
Mayank stopped himself from rolling his eyes.
"Well, you're in luck, Mr. Sharma because we have open enrollment throughout the year and all you have to do is fill out some paperwork and talk with our early-childhood teacher."
"Sounds great," Mayank said. "Can this be done today or do I have to come back?"
"We can do it all this morning and have Neev start today. Let me just go get Miss Nupur Bhushan."
Mayank nodded absently and then felt his eyes grow wide as Sonali walked away. His breathing rate increased. No actually, he didn't feel like he was breathing. Or was he? No, he felt the wind knocked out of him. That's the right expression. Nupur Bhushan? Did she just say Miss Nupur Bhushan?
Nupur Bhushan from college? Nupur Bhushan his first, and to be perfectly honest his only love till date? That same Nupur Bhushan? This was not happening to him. He clenched his teeth.
He wouldn't let 5 years of hard work get washed away so easily. He knew one day or another he would have to encounter her. Damn Mumbai and it's minuscule size! If it was indeed her, he wouldn't show her his surprise. He will react with poise. With pride. Not like a love-sick puppy who just found his long-lost love. Love, Mayank thought with scorn. More like loathing.
