Chapter 1
"Sonali! Sonali get up now I said!" Nupur pleaded with her roommate. It was already 8.30 and it took a horribly long time to reach school from their apartment. Nupur knew this only too well, as everyday she and Sonali had to trek 3 miles to reach their dilapidated but beloved school. Their financial standing had reached an all time low where they couldn't even afford to pay their rent and other expenses for Little Tots Education Centre ' having sufficient funds to enjoy the luxuries of a car was number 254 on their priority list.
"Sonali if you don't get up right this instant, we will not reach by 9.30 and ALL I repeat ALLthe children will happily skip back to their homes, getting a free day, which means for US it's doomsday 'cause today is payday and IF the parents find out the TEACHERS itself are not there then not only will our reputation go down the drain but the school's as well! Are you hearing me woman?! The SCHOOL'S AS WELL! '.Fine, you don't want to get up'alright then, if we don't get to meet the parents, it means YOU won't get the opportunity to drool over Lakshya's single-and-ready-to-mingle dad." Nupur shrieked in one breath.
"WHAT?!!" Sonali yelled. "He's WHAT?!"
"That's right, you heard me, single-and-ready-to-mingle" Nupur smirked.
"Oh my goodness! When did you hear? When? WHEN? Who told you? Is he really looking for someone? This is surreal! Oh my God Nupur Bhushan, if you're telling the truth then I'll have you know that if he indeed is then I'm going to be the first one to grab that hunk and butter him up and '"
"Alright, alright, please, don't finish that sentence Sonali. I've heard enough dirty talk for a lifetime from you." Nupur laughed, swiftly interrupting her. "I was only kidding so that you'll get up and get ready! It's already 8.30 meri maa, and if you don't get your arse into the bathroom and freshen up this instant I'll -'"
"NUPUR! You were kidding?! How dare you play around with my feelings? You know how much I love that guy! I was so excited and you, like a party-pooper, just had to burst my bubble didn't you?" Sonali pouted, sulking.
Nupur gave an I'm-not-falling-for-that-again look to Sonali and put her arms around her best friend.
"Okay, I'm sorry. Now stop your little drama and hurry! Otherwise you won't get to see Mr Raina at all. It's payday remember! All the parents turn up. Well, newcomers should too but you know we haven't had newcomers since what, 122 years now. I've lost hope of ever seeing bright new faces entering our office again." Nupur pondered, dejected.
Sonali gave her an irritated glare. "Nupur, learn to be more optimistic! You can't keep having that melancholy attitude towards life! I know from Gunjan and Samrat that you were a bundle of joy back in college. You can't let that one stupid incident in your life dictate your whole future! Pull yourself together and get over that phase AND him! It's high time someone knocked some sense into you, and trust me I have tried tons of times but it's like you want to feel miserable and lead a plain Jane lifestyle. This isn't done Nupur! You have to forget, not dwell in the past.
The moment Sonali uttered those harsh words, she regretted it terribly. Nupur was gazing at the window, a far-away expression on her face. A solitary tear managed to break the barrier and roll down her cheek, feeling triumphant that it managed to break free from the enormous bank of tears it's owner had kept building inside her for five years.
"Oh no, I'm so sorry Nupur! I didn't, I mean, I really didn't mean to make you cry! It's just'just looking at you so depressed made me spit out those cruel words'I swear, I didn't mean it at all! Oh please don't cry Nupur. You know it breaks my heart. Please..", Sonali whispered while consoling Nupur.
Nupur immediately wiped her tear and smiled wistfully at Sonali. "Oh Sonali, what would I do without you? Now forget it, like you said, and I promise you, I'll try to forget the past. I can't guarantee it, but I'll definitely try. Abhi ye sab chodo, jaldi tayar ho jao. This must be the tenth time I've told you since 10 minutes ago. Now, go!"
Nupur grinned when Sonali jumped from the bed and ran to the bathroom, singing in her off-tune voice. She had to listen to someone at one point. Sonali was right. So was Gunjan, Samrat, Uday Bhaiyya, Dia, etc'But how was she going to do it? Could she forget the intensity of that young love, the embraces, the soft touches, the kisses'stop stop stop Nupur! Don't put yourself through that torture again! If there was love, there was hatred, if there were sweet whisperings, there were loud fights, if there was understanding, there was misunderstanding. There's no point in thinking about that, Nupur. No point and there is no hope left for anything more.
