Ainun lowered her hands, and folded the prayer mat, placing it gently on the side table, went deeper into her room and stood there, in front of the mirror and even before Aman had a chance to look at her mirror image, he saw her hands rush up to the cloth round her neck and fasten it across her face, covering it.
'Damn, why doesn't she just let it be?' thought Aman to himself.
" Sorry to keep you waiting." She told Aman as she asked him to enter.
" How did you know, I was waiting here?" He asked as he entered.
" Despite the fact that I was in prayer, I could hear you come up." She said smiling.
" Take a seat sir, I want you to take a look at this file."
As Aman sat down on a chair facing a neatly arranged table that contained many books and files, he noticed that Ainun's room was not too filled with all 'girly' stuff but it contained only the things that were considered necessary.
" Very well maintained I must say." Said Aman as Ainun came back holding a file.
"Thank you sir." She said as she took a seat opposite to him.
" Ainun we are not at work, you need not call me sir, and my name is Aman."
Her eyes narrowed, maybe meaning that she was smiling, but because of her face cover it was difficult to know.
" Right Aman. Happy?"
" Very."
" Now listen. Who was your previous CA?"
" Well, it was some guy with the name lets see… Hemant. Why are you interested?"
" Well maybe because, there is an amount of 20 billion in rupees missing, and if you were to have a surprise visit by any of the tax collecting people or whatever you call them, we'll see ourselves in jail."
" 2 BILLION!!! You have to be joking.!!!!"
" Trust me Aman, I'm not."
Aman was absolutely dumbstruck and his mind was running rapidly to think of the nest step.
" Here is what we do, you are to make a list of the places where we have lost money and keep it ready and I'll tell Hemant to come for a visit tomorrow."
" My part of the job is over, the list is already ready, now you do yours."
" Wow Ainun, your really good, I mean I have not seen a better employee in ages."
" I'm glad you have now. Now call him up already!!"
So Aman dialed Hemant's number and called him for a visit without giving away the actual reason.
" That takes care of that." Said Ainun.
" Sure does." Replied Aman, a hint of his worried feeling could be heard in his voice. " I'm glad that this was brought out, I mean otherwise who knows how much money we would continue to loose."
Ainun just nodded.
Now that the formal business was taken care of, Aman was at loss at what he would do or say next.
Ainun may have been feeling the same way, for she rose, went out of the room leaving Aman staring at her as she did so.
" She is very atypical." He said to himself as she rose and started to walk about the room.
It was beautifully done with light cream walls and the corners and the cupboards done in a beautiful dark purple. It was simply mind-boggling.
Aman noticed footsteps moving towards him. He turned to face Ainun, who had in her hands a bowl that was covered.
" Taste this Aman, and tell me how is it."
" No please, I'm already full with the heavy lunch we had."
" That's alright, taste this, it's a sweet that is made out of apricots."
" No please…"
" I made it with a lot of hard work and you are not letting it go to waste mister." She said.
Even before Ainun had finished, Aman took the bowl from her.
She started laughing.
" Don't laugh now. I think if I would have refused you would have practically killed me."
" Na, I don't think so."
" Why don't you join me?" Asked Aman, " Oh I'm sorry I forgot you were fasting."
" It's alright."
Aman tasted it and it was something unbelievable. It was just too good.
" Its lovely Ainun, you are a very good cook."
"Thank you."
Aman finished his bowl and shook his head desperately when offered another.
After a few minutes Aman and Ainun sat side by side, separated by a chair and what was about 5 feet.
"Why do you keep your face covered at all times?" Asked Aman after he had made up his mind that he had to know the answer.
Ainun, to Aman's surprise was taken by shock.
As Aman turned to face Ainun, he could see tear drops filling her eyes up.
" No special reason." She said trying very hard, to keep her voice steady, Aman noticed that.
" Really? It does not seem so." Aman prayed that he was not pushing the point.
" Really." She said calmly this time, it was either that she meant it or she had learned to keep her voice under control, for Aman could still see tears in her eyes.
" Aman, you are the first one to ask me directly about the reason I keep my face covered, I appreciate that you asked me directly, but I don't think I would like to give you an honest answer to your question." She hesitated, looking into Aman's eyes she continued, " I'll tell you the truth when the right time arrives," she paused, " IF it arrives."
She looked right into Aman's eye and they sat there deeply lost in each other's eyes.
" Its alright Ainun." Aman said breaking the silence not looking away from her eyes.
" You know what, you will have to break your fast, and I think you need to be rewarded for your excellent work, so why don't I take you out…I mean so that you can break your fast outside and not at home."
" First things first, we open our fast and not break it, second thing, to show you that I did not mean anything against you when I said what I said earlier lets go." Ainun answered as she kept her eyes locked into Aman's.
Ainun had no idea that with those words she had started a huge storm in her life.
