"Hello?"
"Uh, Hello, kaisi ho beta?" said an unknown voice on the other end. Who was this? Kripa wondered.
"Um, main theek hoon uncle, aap kaise hain?" she asked politely. The voice on the other end halted for a minute. He knew that Suryabhan had a daughter, and he had met that daughter a number of times; she had always been rude and mean, and never had polite manners. So he asked, "Kaun bol rahi ho?"
"Jee, Kripa. Aap kaun?" Kripa asked. "Main Dilip bol raha hoon, America se. Suryabhan hai?" "Jee, eik minute, uncle," Kripa replied. Dilip was very surprised. Who was this Kripa?
"Chacha Jee, aap ke liye phone hai," Kripa said, and handed her uncle the phone. She hurried out of the house before another interruption could come up. She knew Riddhima would probably be waiting for her, and she still had to tell her that she couldn't stay back to study; she would probably get mad, so she didn't need another problem to come up now.
As Kripa was walking, her phone began to vibrate. She looked down and saw "Prithvi" flash on her cell phone screen. She smiled slightly. Prithvi Bose was her next-door neighbor and her best friend until last year, when he had asked her out on a date. She had accepted, and now they were both officially a "couple." Kripa never felt "the spark" when with Prithvi, but she liked him and cared for him. He was the first boyfriend Kripa had ever had; in fact, Kripa had never touched a man other than Prithvi, and no man had touched Kripa either.
"Hello?" Kripa said. "Hi, Kripa, kaisi ho? Kahan ho tum?" Prithvi asked. "Main road pe hoon, college jaa rahi hoon. Tum?"
"Main hoon yahan, ghar pe? Tum kyaa kar rahi ho'bohot dino se kuch kiya nahin. Aaj kuch karein? Howa bout dinner?" Prithvi asked.
"Aaj nahin, Prithvi. Kal mera exam hai, aur tayyari karni hai. How about some other time?" Kripa asked. She knew she would have to work extra hard because she wouldn't have the genius Riddhima helping her study.
"Theek hai," Prithvi replied. "Hum baad mein baat karte hain. Bye!"
Kripa put her phone away and sighed. She really enjoyed being in Prithvi's company. He was known around town and worked at a big firm as a business man. For the most part, he paid attention to her; many times Kripa wondered why. There were many other girls in town, and he had chosen her. That fact gave her some dignity; she felt worthy of other people.
That was another thing. If Kripa was quiet and obedient within the walls of her home, she was loud and energetic outside. She wasn't mean or rude; no, Kripa had her own ways to be seen and heard. She was steadfast in her beliefs and was a tremendous public speaker; she had won numerous awards and trophies for winning debate competitions for her school.
Aside from her confidence on the podium, Kripa was also brilliant on the stage. She had a melodious voice and sang brilliantly, while she also excelled in dance. She sang at a local restaurant, the Pearl, on weekends; the Pearl was a local favorite for teens and adults alike. The fact that she did so many activities around town and participated in so many things made her a favorite of many around town. many knew her as "Kripa beti" or just Kripa.
Her personality played wonders as well. She was soft spoken and kind to everyone, and even when angry, would control her anger to an extent. Maybe it was those miserable years she had spent at her Chacha's house that had taught her the value of patience.
Kripa finally turned the corner and her college came in view. She saw Riddhima and ran up to her. Before Riddhima could say anything, Kripa broke the news that she wouldn't be able to make it to study later in the day.
As predicted, Riddhima was upset. She shot out as many galis as she knew. But then Kripa calmed her down. "Guess what????" Kripa asked. "Kya?" Riddhima asked, still grumpy. "Prithvi ka phone aaya tha. He said he wanted to hang out." "Really?" Riddhima squealed. Riddhima was really happy for friend; although she knew that she and Kripa were like sisters, she also knew that it was essential for every woman to have a male companion in their lives. As far as Riddhima knew, Prithvi was not that bad.
The day went by quickly, and Kripa hurried home after her last class, Biology, ended. She didn't want any more drama in her life than she already had. She stepped into the house, and was about to go straight to her room to study.
"Kripa!" her Chachi called out. "Idhar ao!" "Jee, Chachijee?" Kripa replied. Her chichi was seated on the dining table, writing something in a notebook. "Tumhare chaacha ke dost America se aa rahein hai. Is liye ghar ki safayee karnee hai. Tumhara kamra aur Mishty ke kamre ka safayee tum kardena. Mishty ke paas bohot kaam hai." Kripa nodded. "Okay," she relpied. "Lekin who kahaan soyenge?"
Her uncle's house was relatively small. There was one master bedroom and one bedroom on the top floor, and Mishty and her parents occupied them. Kripa's "room" was on the first floor; it was actually a partition from the study, however the family rarely ever went into that room anyways.
Kripa was more than happy to occupy the small space. When she was younger, she used to be sad and wished she wouldn't have to live in such a rat hole. As she got older, however, she got more and more attached to her small space, and now it had become her home. She rarely left her place, except to eat and help around with the household chores.
"Pata nahin," her aunt replied. "Main wahi soch rahi hoon. Filhaal tum sab safaayee shuroo karo, woh log do din main aa rahe hain!"
"Theek hain," Kripa said, and began to clean and study at the same time. Yeh log kaun hain? She wondered'
