Its strange how everything becomes interpolation when one cannot find a suitable explanation for it. We should remember that is a time and age we are not so learned about. Many things which we cannot imagine and what we think is impossible was possible back then.

It is also very strange that a book having around 9000 verse only grows almost ten times & finally reaches around 12 times of the original. Tell me how it was possible for Pandu to die 6 months after the birth of NS in northern recension & 12 years 6 months after the birth of NS in Southern recension?

I think he had already married twice & had 5-6 children before swayamvara, & his second wife was probably his own choice, a woman he loved. Also Suta men were allowed to marry only twice. Forgot where I read that. So it is unlikely that Karna wanted to marry again, IMHO.
Karna's age (32) was according to my calculation. Acc to that Yudhi was 27 then. Only southern recensions count precise age of these men & that age cannot explain many things. So better we do own calculations bases on cultural backgrounds of those times.

Thanks for the information...by the way, from where did u read that the second wife of Karna was his choice?
I thought nothing was mentioned much about his wives... 😕

I still remember how noisy it was saying Sutas are no less, Sutas are more or less Kshatriyas blah blah blah.. but almost went like 'how dare you' when I asked if Krishna and all Yadus were Sutas😆

This concept of Suta really confuses me...

On one hand, we find Sutas like Keechak who was feared even by the King...Then Sanjoy too was not exactly a very downtrodden person...

Then y is Karna rejected n insulted everywhere for being a Suta? If being a warrior was a taboo for Sutas, then wat about Keechak?
And if being charioteer's son was the issue, then y did people have problem with him even after becoming the King?

As for the theory of seven generations of princesses...the children of Brahmin women n Kshatriya men were Sutas, who did not have the priviledges of either...Was Pratiloma marriage treated like this only between Brahmin women n Kshatriya men or is it between woman of any caste n men of comparitively lower caste?

Amrita , the second wife is a guesswork frm what available today about his wives. While talking to Krishna, Karna mentions Adhiratha goetting wives (more than three) for him. But if we check Sanskrit sloka, it can also stand for a single wife. And after his death, Gandhaari mentions only two wives of Karna. Combining these, Karna had two vives. Since the first one was Adhiratha's choice for him, second wife must naturally be his own choice. That is why I said he was in love with his second wife.

@Sabhayata - please tell me the chapter number of Asura Vrata taken by Karna, in CE. I just want to read original sloka & confirm one thing. Also, in the Roy translation of CE, did Karna say he will not wash his feet or he will not let anyone wash his feet? There is a big difference in the effects of these two & it is an often misunderstood, unseen side of Karna.

Jamy its chapter 540 and as per Bibek Debroy's translation he says i will not wash my feet

But that is the only vow he takes not the one the he will never say no

I think Bhishma was a serious amnesia patient.. just one year back, right before his eyes Karna took the 'vow' of not saying no to anyone only only only from that day and until Arjun was killed.. but this is what Mr Bhishma pitamah had to say... now if you wanna say this is about the duty bound feeding of Brahmans, pls note he has mentioned high regards to Brahmanas and alms giving separately...
I know also thy regard for Brahmanas. thy courage, and thy great attachment to alms-giving!

Not only Bhisma even Krishna ji appreciated karna for his devotion to Brahmins.Guess he didnt know the full story either😆

Devoted to Brahmanas, truthful in speech, engaged in penances, observant of vows, kind even unto foes, for these reasons Karna is called Vrisha. Heroic in battle, possessed of mighty arms and with bow always uplifted, like the lion in the forest depriving leaders of elephantine herds of their pride, Karna always deprives the greatest car-warriors of their pride on the field of battle, and resembles the mid-day sun at whom none can gaze

I think Krishna's appreciation for Karna was probably not genuine. At the time of his death, Krishna viciously tears into Karna.

Isn't that Krishna's praise of Karna from the section that immediately follows Ghato's death, when Krishna tries to warn Arjuna about Karna?
