Part 13

Baldev arrived in Veera's house and noticed the house was all decorated, ready for their wedding. Ranvi was busy at the farm, and Ratan and chaiji had left to do some last minute shopping for Veera. Veera was home all alone.

Baldev (thinking to himself): "Arre vaah, lagta hai shaadi se pehle hi meri Veera mujhse akele main milna chahti hai."

Baldev found Veera in her room. He went up to her and put his arms around her waist. Veera was taken by surprise and actually smiled, happy to see him.

Baldev (whispering in Veera's ear): "Tu aaj bahut sundar dikh rahi hai. Kal hamari shaadi hai lekin tujhe aaj dekh kar main ab aur control nahin kar sakta."

Baldev began kissing Veera on the cheek, and that's when Veera came back to reality, remembering what she had called Baldev for. She remembered her promise to Bansuri.

Veera moved away from Baldev. Baldev was confused.

Baldev: "Ki hoya? Kal hamari shaadi hone ja rahi hai. To ab kya sharmaana?"

Veera tried to stay strong, but she couldn't. She couldn't imagine living her life without Baldev, but she had to keep her promise to Bansuri chaiji.

Veera turned towards Baldev. That was when Baldev noticed that Veera didn't look happy. She looked sad, but then she quickly recovered, and made a determined face.

Veera: "Baldev, main yeh shaadi nahin karungi! Bhool ja mujhe."

Baldev was shocked. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. In anger, he grabbed Veera's shoulders.

Baldev: "Tu ki keh rahi hai? Mazak kar rahi hai na mujhe tang karne? Chal ab mazak khatam. Sach bata ki baat hai? Mujhse naraaz hai?"

Baldev was really confused. He didn't understand why Veera was saying all this.

Veera looked straight into Baldev's face, trying to be strong and cold in front of Baldev. But, what Baldev didn't see was that Veera was putting on an act. Deep down, her heart was breaking saying all this to Baldev. She loved him, but she had to be harsh in order for him every word that came out of her mouth.

Veera (in a cold and stern voice, like she didn't care): "Baldev, main yeh shaadi nahin karunga, kyunki main tujh jaise gawaar se shaadi nahin kar sakti! Tu aur main bilkul alag hai."

Baldev was stunned. Veera had never ever insulted him or spoken to him in this way. Even when they used to be enemies, she never called him gawaar or illiterate.

Baldev clenched his fists. He was filled with rage. How dare Veera insult him.

Baldev: "Kya kahan tune? Gawaar? Toh ab tak yeh kya tha? Dikhawa? Agar tujhe mujhse shaadi nahin karni, toh shaadi ke liye haan kyun ki?"

Veera looked away from Baldev, struggling to control her tears. It really hurt her to see Baldev upset because of her insults. But, she continued with her act.

Veera: "Baldev, tujhe kya laga? Ki main tujh jaise ladke se pyaar kar sakti hoon? Tu yahan pind main kuch kaam nahin karta, bas sarpanch ke khwaab dekhta rehta hai. Main tujh jaise ladke se shaadi kaise kar sakti hoon?"

Baldev couldn't believe that he could have ever loved this girl. This wasn't his Veera. His Veera would never behave like this. This girl was selfish, and arrogant.

Veera broke free from Baldev's grip. She looked at him with all hate that she could come up with, which was hard for her. Baldev saw Veera take off the engagement ring that he had given her.

Veera: "Yeh le. Ab mujhe yeh nahin chahiye. Ab ja."

Veera began walking away, because she knew if she stayed there any longer, she would break down, and Baldev would find out how she truly feels.

As Veera was walking away, Baldev called out to her.

Baldev: "Jaane se pehle, ek sawaal tha? Kyun kiya tune aisa?"

Veera turned towards Baldev.

Veera (in anger): "Jaan na chahta hai? Uss din jab hum tere ghar Gunjan didi ka rishta mere veerji se karne aaye the, toh tum sab ne mere parivaar ki bahut baizati ki thi. Uss din se maine thaan liya tha, ke main iska badla loongi."

Baldev was shocked.

Baldev: "Tu meri Veera ho hi nahin sakti? Jis Veera ko main janta hoon, woh aisa kabhi nahin karegi. Itni kadhvahat! Tu abhi bhi uss din ko bhula nahin payi! Toh jaa, mujhe bhi tujhse shaadi nahin karni."

Baldev left from there, in anger. As soon as Baldev left, Veera finally broke down.

Veera: "Rabji, mainu maaf kijiye. Main Baldev ko aisa dekh nahin sakti. Lekin mujhe yeh karna pada, Bansuri chaiji ko vaada jo diya tha. Maine toh kab se Baldev aur uske parivar ko maaf kar diya tha uss din ke baad. Lekin mujhe yeh kehna pada. Ab yeh shaadi nahin hogi."

That night, Veera spent it in her room, crying all night. She knew Baldev was hurting, and she was hurting even more after what she had said and done to him.

Part 14

A week had gone by since Veera called off her wedding to Baldev. Ratan, Ranvi, and Chaiji, along with Balwant had been shocked with the news. They didn't understand how and why this was happening. Baldev had turned destructive ever since Veera broke off their marriage. He was drinking more, and taking more risks. Bansuri and Gunjan were concerned, and hoped that Baldev didn't hurt himself after what had happened. They knew that all this was happening because of them, but they didn't want to give up on their hate and revenge against Veera.

At Baldev's house...

Bansuri: "Baldev, accha hua ki tujhe uss Veera ka sach pata chal gaya. Tere liye kitni acchi kudiyan hai. Tu chinta mat kar. Main hoon na. Teri shaadi ek acchi kudi se hogi."

Balwant arrived there, having heard Bansuri's words, and he got angry at her.

Balwant: "Bansuriji, yeh aap kaise keh sakti hai? Baldev ki shaadi abhi hi toh tooti hai? Aur Baldev tujhe sach mein lagta hai ki Veera ne tujhse pyaar ka natak kiya Gunjan aur tujhse badla lene?"

Baldev (thinking to himself): "Papaji, aap nu nahin pata ke maine bahut koshish ki Veera se nafrat karne, lekin abhi bhi main usse pyaar karta hoon. Nahin bhool sakta main usse."

Balwant: "Baldev, main tujhe kuch pooch raha hoon?"

Baldev came back to reality, having realized that he was being asked a question.

Baldev (angry again): "Papaji, aap uska naam bhi mat lo! Main uss ladki se nafrat karta hoon. Main use kabhi maaf nahin karunga."

Baldev left from there in rage.

At Veera's house...

Ranvi had noticed that Veera had practically become a living dead body ever since that day. She didn't laugh as such anymore. She was always quiet and this worried Ranvi. Finally, Ranvi had had enough and decided that it was time for him to confront Veera about everything that had happened the past week.

Ranvi: "Veerakhri, menu tujhse baat karni thi."

Veera (pretending to be happy): "Ji veerji, bataiye?"

Ranvi: "Mainu sach bata? Kya tu sach mein Baldev se pyaar nahin karti? Kya tu abhi bhi Gunjan aur Baldev se badla le rahi he? Main nahin manta. Sach bata menu?"

Ranvi shook Veera's shoulders, upset seeing her like this. Veera tried to look away and lie, but she could see that her veerji was hurting seeing her like this. She had to tell him the truth, but also make him promise that he didn't tell anyone.

Veera: "Veerji, agar main aapko sab sach bataungi, toh aap ko bhi mujhse vaada karna hoga ki aap kissi ko kuch nahin kahenge."

Ranvi promised Veera that he wouldn't tell anyone anything, but what Veera didn't know was that Ranvi had crossed his fingers behind his back, so that Veera wouldn't see.

Veera told Ranvi everything about that night when Bansuri and Gunjan came to her room and made her promise that she would not marry Baldev, because of Bansuri almost having had a heart attack during one of her arguments with Balwant and Baldev regarding her opposition to Veera.

Ranvi was shocked. He couldn't believe Bansuri would stoop so low, along with Gunjan to stop Veera's marriage to Baldev.

Ranvi: "Mainu pata tha Veera ki tu sach mein Baldev se pyaar karti hai. Tune apne pyaar ko kurbaan kar diya Bansuri chaiji ki khushi ke liye? Lekin tu bhool gayi ki inn sab mein tujhe kitni chot pahunchegi, aur Baldev. Tujhe pata hai ki Baldev pehle jaisa ho gaya hai. Usse toh apni zindagi ki parva hi nahin hai. Ab voh sara din ya toh daaru pi raha hota hai, ya apne aap ko chot pahunchane ki koshish karta hai."

Veera was shocked and hurt to hear this. She knew that Baldev hated her for what she did, but she had hoped that he would get over their breakup. But she was wrong.Veera began to cry.

Veera (thinking to herself): "Main kitni galat thi? Meri vajah se Baldev apne aap ko chot pahuncha raha hai. Lekin main ki karaan rabji? Main Bansuri chaiji ka vaada kaise tod sakti hoon?"

Ranvi: "Veera, aisa mat kar. Baldev ko sach bata de. Hum sab Bansuri chaiji se baat kar lenge aur teri shaadi Baldev se ho jayegi."

Veera: "Nahin veerji. Agar chaiji iss shaadi se raazi nahin hai, toh main nahin chahti ki meri vajah se Baldev aur chaiji ke beech mein daraar aaye meri vajah se."

At the dhaba...

Baldev was busy drinking beer along with Balli and Jaggi. Balli and Jaggi noticed that Baldev was drinking too much beer, and they knew that he was just hurting himself. He was trying to drink away all his problems and sadness. They were worried about him.

Balli: "Paaji, ab bas, aapne bahut sharaab peeli hai. Ab aur nahin. Aapke papaji kya kahenge?"

Baldev didn't care about what his papaji had to say. He had to drink. Getting drunk was the only way for him to stop thinking about Veera. Despite everything that had happened, Baldev was seeing Veera everywhere and thinking of her everytime. For a minute, Baldev forgot about his anger towards Veera, and started to smile when he thought back to imagining seeing Veera everywhere he went. Like earlier today, he thought he saw her in the market, wearing a nice, pretty pink suit, and hearing her anklets jingling away, but then it turned out to be another girl from the pind.

Jaggi and Balli noticed that Baldev was lost in thought. Jaggi tried to snatch the bottle of beer from Baldev's hand, but in vain. Baldev came back to reality, realizing that he had been dreaming of Veera..again. Baldev went back to being angry and held the beer bottle tightly in hand.

Baldev (angrily): "Chod de menu Jaggi! Menu sharaab peene de!"

Jaggi and Balli realized that there was no point in trying. Baldev wouldn't give in. They knew that there was only one person who could try to talk some sense into him, even though that person was also the reason for Baldev to be in this state.

Jaggi called Veera. Veera recognized the number as Jaggi's, but she picked it up, worrying that something might have happened to Baldev.

Veera: "Jaggi veerji...Baldev theek toh hai na?"

Jaggi: "Veera, Baldev paaji bahut pee rahe hai, lekin hum unhe rok nahin pa rahe. Aap hi unhe rok sakte ho."

Veera felt guilty, knowing that all this was happening because of her.

Veera: "Theek hai. Main abhi aati hoon."

Ranvi noticed Veera's concern, and could see that despite what Veera might say, she could not stay away from Baldev.

At the dhaba..

Baldev was still drinking, when suddenly someone snatched the bottle of beer away from him.

Baldev (in anger): "Kiski himmat hui Baldev Singh se panga lene?"

Baldev looked to see who had snatched his bottle away from him, and at first, he was surprised to see it was Veera. Baldev thought he was dreaming.

Baldev: "Abhi tu phir mere sapno mein aane lagi? Tu mujhe chain se nahin jeene de sakti?"

Veera (being firm): "Bas Baldev, aur nahin. Ab chal ghar chal. Balwant tayaji aur chaiji tere liye pareshaan honge."

Baldev realized that he was not dreaming. Veera, the girl who broke his heart was actually there, and wanted him to go home.

Baldev grabbed Veera's arm and his face was just inches away from hers.

Baldev: "Tu kaun hoti hai mujhe rokne? Kaun hai tu meri? Tu ne hi ho shaadi tod di?"

Veera felt hurt. She could see that although Baldev tried to act tough on the outside, like he didn't care, his eyes clearly expressed his sadness, pain, and heartbreak over what she did.

Veera felt really bad, and wanted to touch Baldev's face, to scream out that she loved him, and couldn't see him hurting like this, but she had promised his beeji.

Veera (quietly this time): "Baldev, please. Mat kar aisa. Galti meri hai. Tu apne aap ko saza mat de."

Veera pleaded with Baldev. Despite Baldev being drunk, he could see the hurt and genuine concern in Veera's eyes. He didn't understand why Veera was doing all this when her eyes clearly expressed something else to him.

Baldev: "Theek hai, main aur nahin piyunga. Lekin tu ja yahan se. Main teri shakal nahin dekh sakta."

Veera tried to control the tears that were welling up in her eyes, and before Baldev could see her crying, she walked away from there.

At Veera's house..

Ranvi heard the front door being closed with a bang, and saw Veera, who looked like she had been crying run upstairs to her room. Ranvi had had enough and decided he had to take action.

The next day...

Baldev was alone at home, and completely sober for a change. He was surprised to see Ranvi walk in to his house, wanting to talk to him.

Baldev (in anger): "Tu itthe ki kar raha hai? Mainu tujhse baat nahin karni samjha!"

Ranvi was determined to speak to Baldev.

Ranvi: "Baldev, main yahan tujhse ladne nahin aaya. Tujhe sach batane aaya hoon."

Baldev was confused.

Baldev: "Sach? Kaun sa sach?"
