St Stephen Hospital

The hospital corridor was too crowded for him. The wives , mothers, children of accident victims……….anxious, fearful, praying,………… some heart broken, some holding on to hope…..waiting for news about their family and friends.

All he needed was inner peace, hoping to find which, he walked outside, to find an open lawn. The sunshine, not bright, yet pleasant, calming his emotions after …….a day long flight……….. the rush to the hospitals , going through hospital rooms, until he found her here, in a room, covered in blood, being attended by a nurse,…………….

As much as he had yearned to meet her………… did it have to be like this.

The phone vibration brought him back.

" Hi Raghav. Thanks for sending the blood, I was just planning on calling".

" Where are you? I am in the hospital reception".

" Oh I am ……. I will there in a minute".

Outside the post OP ICU

"She is fine. She is under observation"…….."Thanks for arranging for the blood. I just couldn't think of anyone else who could. If it hadn't been for you, today……"

"She is going to be ok!"

"Ya…."

"Good"……….."Why don't we go to the canteen?"

Hospital Canteen

5pm

Taking a sip of his coffee, Raghav was framing an apt question.

"When did you come back?"

"Today morning"

"And…….. on business?"

"eh…."

"and for her….?"

Viren looked up once and bent down again to take in another sip, trying to avoid the eye contact.

"You didn't think twice before you left"

"I had to……… I thought I was making the right decision. It was best for her. Afterall she is my best friend. Her happiness was above all"

"You call yourself best friend and yet didn't know where her happiness lies………… Viren haven't you hidden your feelings for long enough. Cant you let it out, atleast now."

Hearing no reply from him, Raghav continued.

"You didn't trust me enough to tell me. You could have atleast told her"

" I trust you, that's why I left her….. with you"

"Wah the great guy that you had to be. The ultimate sacrificer. When did you become so dramatic. Idiot.

If it had been anyone else, she would have moved on. But she chose to wait. Four years, no reply, no mail, no call, …… didn't even know where you were, but she kept her faith"

" I thought you two were…….."

" How did you think she would marry me? How did you think I would let that happen if I knew?"

Hospital waiting hall

10 pm

"Viren"

He opened his eyes to find Dr Elen stand in front of him. He jerked up worried how long he had dosed off.

" Is she ok ?"

"Ya she is fine. We are shifting her to the ward. You can meet her now"

"Oh …. thank God. Thank you."

She sat on the couch and placed a hand on his shoulder .

He turned to look at her , her eyes emanating concern……..

"I tried to get in touch with you after you left."." I only want you to know that you did your best to save your mother, but sometimes you cannot fight against the call of heaven"

He held her hand, spoke, not looking into her eyes

"I know…. I know you did everything possible too. And i know that today she is in the best place."…" sometimes I just wish she had been there with me………. longer ……"

"I am sure she is proud of you today, for the man you have become, independent, leading in your field of business."
