St Stephen Hospital
"She is in room no 52."
"Thank you"
He walked down the corridor. 'Room 48, 49, 50, 51 , ''', 52'
He entered the room. His gaze shifted from one to the other, the nurse adjusting the drip, ecg monitor, the saturation monitor, the blood pressure recording , ''. , Shifting his gaze , he looked at her, as she lay motionless on the bed, her face as peaceful, her chest rising rhythmically , the head in a plaster and the right leg bandaged .
He walked ahead and stood next to her bed not shifting the gaze from her serene face, until the nurse spoke up.
"She has been given analgesics and sedatives. She will be awake by tomorrow morning."
"Can I stay with her?"
"Yes" . "I am incharge of the night shift and will be monitoring her periodically. Yet if there is a need, you can find me in the nurses cabin"
"Thank you"
Making a mental note of the monitors once again and assuring of no need to worry, she left the room.
He walked around the bed, stood next to her, watching her for a while, and then bent down to gently hold her hand.
After a while he pulled up a chair. Sitting on it, not letting go off her hand, he kept looking at her , the memories of the last time that they sat hand in hand coming to him.
----------------------------------------------
It was a week after his mother had passed away. He knew she was in the terminal stage of breast cancer and there was nothing he could do. But her loss was intolerable to him.
""I wish I could '..somehow'''"
" You did everything worldly possible to save her"
"She always wanted me to pursue my dream . I had promised her I will."
"Viren you are the best son, any mother could have. I know you will fulfil your promise"
"You know what Jeevika. Sometimes I think you believe in my abilities more than I do ?"
"You are a fighter Viren. And I believe in that fighter in you."
He held on to to her hands gently as she tightened the grip.
"Promise me not to loose your faith in me. Cause your faith gives me the strength to fight."
"I always had the faith in my belief. How can I loose my faith in you?"
That night he wanted to believe in her, as she made his life worth living now.
-------------------------------------------------
He stirred as the sunrays hit his face.
'Gosh. When ,..How did I sleep off? '
Coming back to his senses, he realized he had fallen asleep resting his head on the bed, as his hand still clenched hers. Shifting his gaze to look at her, he was mesmerized. How elegant she looked? The sun brightening half her side facing him, so radiant.
How he wished she opened up those greys to look at him!.
As if responding to his wish she stirred. Silently wincing in pain, her fingers moving slightly, she opened her eyes.
Not able to take the sudden flash of light she closed them, opening them again, strugging to form a picture of what was in front of her. Finally after the visual adaptation process settled in, she started looking around, as he leaned in closer.
She felt the presense and slowly sensing the touch , she turned to face him. As he looked on with a smile of joy and gratefulness.
"Hey...how are you feeling?"
" Never better" as vibrant as she wanted to sound her voice felt weak, but she managed to give him a smile.
"Where are we?"
So he briefed her about the past 24 hours. The accident, the operation, trying to give her her facts alone, as he didn't want to trouble her now with all that they went through .
"I wanted to give you a warm welcome back home in the band bhaja style, but now here we are, me on the hospital bed, with you taking care of me. Wow could life get better?!"
He chuckled at her talk and said
"I dont care. All that matters is I am with you and all I need to know is that you are fine"
"I am fine, Viren"
They stared into each others eyes with a new sense of hope, as they felt nothing could go wrong now.
----------------------------------
"Good morning Miss Choudary."
"Good morning doctor"
"I can see you are already better."
Dr Elen smiled as Viren moved away .
"Ms Choudary, you had suffered a vascular injury in your right leg, fortunately minor, which needed an operative procedure to effectively control the blood loss. Fortunately there was no fracture, so am expecting your wound to heal up soon. You will need to be on bed rest for atleast a week, with regular dressings and medication. But nothing to worry. You will be all hale and healthy say in a month"
Viren waited till Dr Elen moved out , came closer to the bed and with genuine concern asked
"What shall I get you. The doctor says you can take liquids if you feel thirsty, so shall I '"
She cut him off
"I am not thirsty, but you look tired. You don't have to say, for me to realise that you are straving since yesterday. So why don't you listen to me. Go freshen up, get some calories , take a nap and come back later"
He tried but knew no amount of convincing would work. She had her way. He gave in. After doubling ensuring that a staff would keep her company , he left, but promising to be back in max an hour and a half.
He had only his cards to his credit. All his lauggage was left behind at the aiport.
He checked in a hotel nearby, freshed up, bought some clothes, got some food and headed back to the hospital.
