@ratna I am seeing this post quite late as I was quite busy over the weekend. This is my take on the character as well as the actor.
First and the foremost let me blame the CVs and director for the poor sketch of Dev-Nithya lovestory. I like the love story but I had lot of expectations from it. First and the foremost whenever you create a love story it has to touch the audience heart. For that you have to create the script in such a way that the audience completely feel the happiness of the couple and the beauty of the relation that existed. Only then the audience can feel the pain of their separation and it will tug your heart strings that you want to the couple to be together.
CVs in the FBs mostly concentrated on the time Dev went to US or the time just before it and the FBs were not connected properly with the stories. Ideally when Durga enters the Goenka mansion along with the bitter memories of Payal rape case Dev should have come in her mind, their child hood should have been explored. Before the entry of Dev's character itself the betrayal feeling for Durga should have been explored. Basically what I am telling is the beautiful friendship of Dev-Nithya should have been shown from childhood through teenage years in Durga's flashbacks and also in the intial flashbacks for Dev. That would have made the audience connect to their beautiful relation and the MU that happened between them.
Then came another flaw. His absence for 2 years. In the confrontation scene between Devga it was not properly explored. We are not in 70s or 80s where no contact is possible. More explanation would have been given . Like Dev wrote email to Nithya post his detention. Those emails should have been in Dev's inbox. We can atleast assume someone hacked Nithya's mailbox and configured Dev's mail to go to spam folder.
He tried calling her when he got the news, but her mobile was not reachable. It could have been shown after getting that email which Nithya believed to be from Dev and the pestering call she changed her number. Dev tried reaching out to his friends in India. But they denied to help or they gave excuse as they don't want to get involved in the scandal. Then detention. After he came news of her death came. He had no proof of her existence hence was forced to complete his studies, but somehow post completion he wanted to know things and have come back.
If something like the above was shown it would have been more logical. Ideally one epi should have been properly dedicated for that Dev-Durga confrontation where instead of Dev simply telling I don't know anything a proper explanation should have been given.
There are many other things like this but I am highlighting only the key things. In short CVs were unable to convey the beauty of that friendship and love to the audience. Also they botched up Dev's character which had lot of potential in the process.
So that is about character. Now coming to the actor. Yes CVs did botch up Dev big time. See the actor cannot do anything if Dev is unable to join dots and find Nithya. That is only possible whenever the story demands it. But to me where Bhuvnesh failed is in carrying the intensity of Dev's love and loss to the audience. See he is good in confrontation scene with Durga, he is good in fight scenes, he is good in some of the emotional scene for e.g his entry, locket scene and the wedding scene. But then there were numerous scenes where he could have carried the pain of Dev to the audience the key one being when Mathur tells him what happened during Payal rape case, then his alone moments when he thinks about Nithya in all these scenes Bhuvnesh failed to carry the emotional intensity of Dev. Ideally the scenes I mentioned above should make a viewer like me run for tissue paper. Unfortunately it didn't happen.
I had also said in another post Dev was supposed to be a role of life time like Sooraj in DABH. But then both the character and actor failed to deliver on the potential of the character. But I feel Bhuvnesh can always learn from his experience and can better his performance and take up better up roles in his career. It is not the end of the road.
