Clochette has obviously not seen this movie since she is against feminism and thinks it is sexist to men.

Madhuri was 🔥🔥🔥. Mahima & Rekha were good too. Manisha as always carried her usual 3-4 expressions throughout and was actually the weak link.

Manisha had become an alcoholic those days so no wonder her performance was below the mark.Although she is the one with maximum screen time .She is there from start to finish .Rekha,Mahima and Madhuri appeared in bits/pieces.

If there is an Indian director who is grossly underrated and never received the recognition and respect that he deserved as one of the Goats, it’s Rajkumar Santoshi. Even in this thread, 4 posts in and no one mentioned him yet.May be because the man never really did any PR putting himself on the pedestal like some of his contemporaries with a fraction of his talent. What a filmography the man has. Hard to find another Director from east to west to north to south in India who can match him in versatility. Truly one of the best India has ever got!🙌

Lajja – 24 Years Later: A Bold Voice That Still Echoes Lajja, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, released in 2001, wasn’t just a film—it was a mirror held up to society. Even after 24 years, it remains one of Bollywood’s most fearless takes on women’s struggles, dignity, and empowerment. The film revolves around four women—Vaidehi (Manisha Koirala), Maithili (Mahima Chaudhry), Janki (Madhuri Dixit), and Ramdulaari (Rekha)—each representing different shades of womanhood in India. Their stories are stitched together through the journey of Vaidehi, who runs away from an abusive marriage and witnesses the injustices faced by other women along the way. Santoshi used the film as a loud critique of patriarchy, dowry, honor killings, and exploitation. The dialogues were sharp, emotional, and sometimes hard-hitting enough to make viewers uncomfortable—exactly what the film intended. Performances by Rekha and Madhuri were particularly memorable; Madhuri’s fiery speech on stage remains iconic even today. While the movie was criticized for being too melodramatic and heavy-handed in parts, its intention was clear: to shock audiences into thinking. With strong music by Anu Malik (songs like Badi Mushkil still remembered), and a powerful ensemble cast, Lajja wasn’t entertainment in the usual sense—it was a cinematic protest. Verdict (24 Years Later): Even though Bollywood has moved on to more subtle storytelling, Lajja still commands respect as a film that dared to raise its voice. It’s not perfect, but it’s courageous, and that’s why it continues to be remembered. ⭐ Rating (Retrospective): 4/5 – Bold, emotional, and unforgettable.
