Whilst the story in EHT is veering off topic exploring the internal and external relationship dynamics of the Goenka family, I chanced upon this 2 year old article which reflects the bad state of women's safety and security in India.

It is shocking that India has been voted as the worst place in the world for women , our society's double standards and hypocrisy notwithstanding.

Here is the link- This is how the world sees us. I am sure it will provoke plenty of strong emotions, reactions and thoughts

Apologies if you have already seen this.

This is a ridiculously blasphemous article aimed at dividing people of India on gender lines. Don't go by the Guardian. Its a foreign news agency and will surely try to defame our country.

I agree some evil elements have caused an increase in crime rate, but law will take its course. Rapists will definitely get life imprisonment as minimum punishment.
and death if crime is repeated.

We have tough laws for this matter. So there's no need to think that India is not safe for someone.

In fact I feel everyone should stand up for himself/herself and raise voice against injustices that happen in the society.
If we are strong no one can harm us.

That way US is worst. Its even dangerous to step out of the house for a walk once it gets dark else you'll be certainly robbed/killed.

Racial attacks in Australia is nothing new.

All middle east countries and islamic countries are in a state of war and people are killing themselves.
In China, people have absolutely no freedom of speech. any voice of dissent is crushed.

That way India is much better. Indian traditions always teach non-violence and respect for women, elders and senior citizens.

I ve no reason to believe that India is not safe for anyone.

I completely agree with you. And thanks for expressing which in turn is my opinion too. These foreign articles try to defame India on the basis of few incidents. Whereas Indian people who support such articles don't realize that India is very populated country . There are millions of other people in India who live a fortunate and safe life too in India. I agree some heinous acts of crime do take place and I feel sorry for those people but such crimes are there everywhere in this world. In most developed countries too rapes, murders, domestic violence, sexual harassment, etc etc all kinds of crime takes place.

There are things wrong all over the world not just in India.

However, specifically focussing on India, it is really heartening to learn that women do feel safe in here and that there are measures in place now to address all the injustices and crimes against women.

I do not work for the Guardian nor do I have a vested in this or any newspaper. I think the article did throw light on the ongoings in India and I do not believe it is a figment of anyone's imagination.

I am not sure what anyone would gain by dividing people on gender lines anywhere in the world, leave alone India.

It goes without saying that men and women do need each other and are simply worse off without the other ( in most cases and generally speaking). The need is to be able to achieve this by acknowledging this matter and being able to respect one another and to have no tolerance for atrocities of any kind.

The article simply pointed out how as a country India falls way behind others.

If things have been turned around in India and changes have taken place in terms of law and its practise as well as in the society's attitude towards women and crimes against them, in a span of just 2 years , then I take my hats off to India and all Indians!

I do hope that the next poll of the international community reflects this change-We do like to see and hear only nice things being said about us even if it comes from a foreign news agency!

the western world potray us like that-poor,rigid,ridiculuous n gender discrimination.

a new way of colonialization it is.

look at the statistic the most number of rape happen in western world, instead of being so open to sex.
even thei girls thinks they are not equally treated as guys (read living histry by hilary clinton)

It is true that crimes happen all over the world.
It is also very likely that only a small percentage of people commit crimes and the large majority live feeling safe and secure ( as I have been made to believe )

In my view, one rape is one too many.

This is not just about statistics or about which country has more rapes than the other.

In India there is a particular hypocrisy around such crimes where the women are readily blamed ( she wad drunk, was late out at night, was dressing to attract male attention etc.,) which makes it hard for the woman to even start seeking justice.

It is the crime rate + the attitudes of society, towards women and victims of rape and sexual crimes+, the difficulties a woman goes through in order to seek justice that puts India in the bottom of the list.

As a country we can choose to be open and honest about what is happening ,acknowledge one's shortcomings and look to move forward toward a more safe and just society for all ( a la 'Satyameva jayate')

or

we can bury our heads in the sand and believe we are o.k because we think other countries are worse than us, foreign media are out to malign us etc., a la politicians/ ostriches .

I'm not indian nor have I ever been there but from the article what j can concur is that it is extremely biased. Yes I agree that some events they mentioned do Occur but those places are mostly rural areas where education is not that prominent. If they are to look at a neutral picture it is not as horrendous as they make it out to be. Even country has areas where the education system is lacking whether it be Somalia, Mexico, Pakistan or India. And due to that lacking these events occur. The article is not a good source to judge what India is like. I just think it's really sad that the developed part of the western world has these opinions and that they need to be more neutral and respect others cultures as well...

I agree with this article!
India is indeed the worst country for women amongst the G20 nations as described. Its not a matter of pride that India is better than African countries like Congo or Somalia which are far more backward in economy and development.
In reality, India cannot call itself a developed country unless they protect the rights and dignity of half of its population, the female half!

I know what Im saying because I grew up in India, spent the first 3 decades of my life there.
Every single day, girls and young women there have to face harassment and indecent behavior in buses, public transport, workplaces, commuter trains, crowded places, sometimes even in educational institutions!

Everyday, girls step out of their homes ready to face neighbourhood scoundrels, heckling on the streets, the so called eve-teasers, who also hang around girls' schools and colleges.

Every day there are dowry deaths, domestic abuse, rapes, molestations, trafficking of females, female infanticide, female foeticide and countless cases of abuse and torture of women and young girls!

We have faced this growing up as girls in India, we used to read abt these cases then... yet this violence continues against countless girls and women even today!

Modernization has changed nothing, in fact technology has made it worse, as now there are the added crimes of making indecent MMS and blackmailing the victim, etc.

One just has to read newspaper headlines to know and acknowledge the truth! Closing your eyes to the horrors going around will not change the reality!

After the Nirbhaya incident, the whole world views India as a country of rapists and we cannot deny what is still happening there.
The laws were changed, punishment made more severe for rape and molestation, but these are not being implemented properly and have done nothing to deter the criminals!
In fact such crimes went up by 20% in 2013...

Many of these cases do happen in villages where people are illiterate and society is backward and horribly patriarchal and savage in outlook!
But what abt the recurring cases in Delhi, the rape capital of India? What abt such cases in metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Kolkata?

And what about the school rapes in Bangalore, the IT capital of India? We have all been shocked and horrified by the pedophiles attacking little girls as young as 3 and 6 yr old in that city's schools!
Why arent they protecting the little children in those expensive schools? Why cant the teaching staff accompany the little kids everywhere instead of letting them wander off and become victims of pedophiles?

In the west, there are many such child abuse cases, thats why the schools and parents are extra protective abt the kids! Kids are taught from very young age not to trust strangers, its called Stranger-danger.
Why cant Indian schools implement programs to teach little kids abt stranger danger and also provide constant protection to kids while they are at school? Why arent there female attendants on school buses?

Instead of being in denial and ignoring such horrifying cases, the public shd get angry and demand tougher laws, punishments and demand constant protection of little children who are the most vulnerable!
And ALL girls starting from their teens shd learn some sort of self defence to protect themselves since Indian mothers wont teach their sons how to respect girls and treat them as human beings.

Anybody heard of the 50 million missing? The 50 million girls who are missing from population of India because they were killed in the womb or immediately after birth?
That is a statistics that cannot be denied in any way!

Of course there is misogyny, gender injustice and gender violence in the west too but they have better laws in place and criminals are punished most of the time, especially for more horrible crimes of child abuse. And nobody kills female foetuses in the west or drowns newborn female infants in milk! Such offenders would get the death sentence!
