Hi, everyone! Long time. 😃
So, the question is -- What made you choose that particular title for your story?

It is really weird actually, how I chose the title Bitter Sweet Symphony. And it's not any different from how I choose all the other story titles of mine.

First of all I'm not a plotter, I'm more of a pantser.

When a plot possess me, it is in the form of a general idea. Separate and random glimpses of twists and major scenes that I think will be awesome flashes through my mind all day and night. At some point, I think up what the opening scene will be, the ultimate hook. I don't write it down immediately, or if I want to I just write a few lines that I don't want to forget later.

Then I let things cook in my mind, and listen to music, I love songs... all kinds of songs -- old and new and anything. And while the story is cooking in my mind, I also find myself focusing on a particular song... the one that I can't get out of my mind no matter how much I try. Like ringing in the ear they stay always. The lyrics tug at my heart, and I don't want to let go of it, I keep the title of the song, I soak in the theme and pour it down into my stories.

That's why all my stories have titles of songs.

I completely depend on music while I write. Tune and words become one, separating them is impossible.

I know the lyrics don't match the story's real theme entirely, but it's the emotions that matters more. We can always bend and break words and meanings of them.

That's how I named Bitter Sweet Symphony, the new version is Bitterly Sweetly. Undertone of the song is still there, weaving is still going on, I don't know when I will be satisfied enough to stop it.

So, that's it.

I know it's quite a long answer. But hell will freeze over when I will learn to speak less. 😆

Brilliant idea this thread is. 👏
Hat's off to who asked this question and my insanely tight hugs to the brain from where it came. 🤗

I am one of those lazy souls who has not taken any efforts to decide the title of any story written by me.
So how it works is that I write a piece and then decide what it needs to be called depending on the feel that they give. The story is written and read and the title is decided at the fag end.

Kinara was the most casually chosen titles of all of my stories. The title struck my mind only once IF gave me a prompt while posting the story , to add a title. I actually then added a dialouge having the word Kinara to endorse the title.😆..eventually I concluded that the piece could not have been named better. Two souls who were drifting apart and yet hoping for a common shore to land on.

Goodbye Shravan was a last minute decision as well. I had realised how many people had avoided the story fearing a heartbreaking tale of Shravan and Sumo. I later on received scores of pm s telling me how they had pictured a completely different story due to the title. Incidentally, Suman was never my protagonist even when I had the idea...it was always Seher. So I gave a title that explained her renouncing the last semblance of hurt she associated with Shravan.

Likhavat entries again had their titles pinned to them in the last moment depending on feel that they gave me.

Cappy!

What a post!

I'll give a general gist of how I come up with names and its similar in a way to Lara's strategy.

I have prompts generally, really vague ideas. I let them develop in my brain, I imagine many different scenarios and then when I have a better idea of what I'm planning to do, a name pops khud se. Cause my names are very in sync with the update, the name itself is enough to give an inclining of the update that follows.

Alfaaz happened cause words are important, said or unsaid. And that's what I wanted to target on this piece. Inception of Alfaaz happened 3 months before I put the prompt up. The actual prompt was a few words, viz:

Apology
Skype
College
Prom
Ragging
Topping
Business
Oxford
Fight
Pain
Longing
Happily ever after

Between all this Alfaaz the name struck. And you have seen exactly how I've built on this prompt.

I won't give details of all cause generally its the prompt that determines my piece name :D

About Alation though, I had used this word in the poetry of Alaahida. I had fallen in love with that word. As a new year's resolution, I had decided to write something towards giving hope. This was November I believe, early. When I spoke to Nik about it, I told her I'm planning a poetry book, she flipped needless to say. Too happy she got. And while discussing what it would have, and what it would contain of, Alation struck.

I hope this is the answer you were looking for 🤗
