Chapter 5
"Where are my things? At this rate I am never reaching on time. What's with people's obsession of early morning meetings? Can't they have it at 12pm?"
"Why have you suddenly become a complain master? Your things on the showcase, see!"
"What would I do without you?"
"Nothing"
"Hey! that's not fair."
"It's the truth"
"Hmm whatever"
"Nice way to wiggle out of an argument when you're losing"
"Shut up!"
"You shut up"
They looked at each other and broke out laughing. Every morning, in the last two years, was spent in these cute nok-jhoks and both Shravan and Suman, set out to work. Life was good. This wasn't always the case.
*Flashback*
After Ramanth's confession, Shravan was left dumbfounded. He couldn't understand the happenings around him. His father's words had hurt him a lot. He couldn't look at Suman. He felt ashamed, defeated and betrayed. He saw his father standing before him. he wanted to say something but he instead turned around and headed upstairs. He realized that his father was calling things off and he wouldn't have any of it. Not when he knows of Sumo's love for him.
"There is no need to tell Nanaji anything. I am marrying Suman. I don't want to talk you, papa. Not now, not ever. You knew everything, everything. Yet, you did all this. What did you achieve? My misery, my downfall, a drunkard for a son. Is that what you wanted?" he said, almost crying. Ramanth stood quietly. He couldn't do much now. His game was over.
"I am going to marry Suman. that's final. Let all preparations continue as they are. We will marry on the date that has been set. You! are not going to cause any trouble. I will have none of it. None." Saying this he stormed out of the house. Pushkar was ashamed while Preeti was happy, her sister was going to be happy. As for Suman, she was relieved. Shravan had stood up for their love. She was at peace.
At Malhotra house
Ramanth stormed into the house to speak to Kamini.
"Bhaisaab, is everything alright? You seem tensed?" asked Kamini
"Kamini! I want to call off this marriage. Shravan will not marry Suman. No. Never!!"
"But why Bhaisaab? Shravan puttar loves Suman" Lalaji interrupts.
"I'll tell you why, Lalaji. It's because Suman is and I quote - independent, overconfident, self-made, egotistic'. Atleast Mr Ramnath Malhotra thinks so. And he tried everything to keep her away from me, be it bribing her with money for paying the bills for Pushkar and Preeti's marriage or asking her to stay away from me. He compelled her to do it. Lo and behold! I almost lost her to that b****** Aditya. But he still wasn't satisfied hence he went to cancel the wedding himself" screamed Shravan.
Everyone was aghast. They couldn't believe what they heard.
Shravan continued, "I must be one of the few misfortunate children whose parents don't give a s**t about their child and his psyche. They are only concerned with their life and its success. But, I have had enough. Mr Ramanth Malhotra, I am marrying Sumo. Whether you like it or not." And he stormed out.
-------------
The marriage happened as planned with all the rituals and fanfare. Everyone was happy, including Shravan. His heart was at peace knowing Suman loved him. Their eyes shone with happiness. Their wait was finally over.
The Malhotra clan had ensured that Nirmala and Shravan were united. It was Lalaji and Kamini who revealed Nirmala's backstory to Shravan. Ramanth had dug his grave, but they didn't want to keep Shravan in the dark. They couldn't let his mother miss the biggest moment in his life. Shravan recalled how the truth unfolded.
-------------
That night Shravan had two visitors to his room. Lalaji and Kamini.
"Shravan puttar, we wanted to talk to you about your mother" said Kamini.
"Just hear us out, then it is up to you to do what you want to" said Lalaji.
"Puttarji, Nirmala Bhabhi is innocent in this whole scenario. She was innocent all along. She never left you willingly. She did not desert you." said Kamini.
"What are you saying chachi?" asked a puzzled Shravan.
"She is right puttarji, Nirmala Bhabhi didn't leave you. Bhaisaab accussed her of infidelity following which they separated and were filing were divorce. She came back for you, but your father sent her back and threaten to malign her name and memory in your eyes. She didn't want you to witness an ugly custody battle, so she left. She and your father are still married and she is just Aditya and his sister's guardian. She and I kept in touch. She always asked about you and knew about your life. She was always there, puttar. Always!" said Lalaji.
Shravan was dumbfounded. He was at a loss of words. But he pieced the puzzle and realized that what he heard was correct. His mother didn't abandon him. she was always there. The knowledge of this information set a lot of things straight.
---------------
After all the rituals, once the couple reached Malhotra house, Shravan made an announcement, "I have decided something. Suman and I are going home."
"But this is your home, puttar ji" said Lalaji.
"This is my father's home, Lalaji. Not mine. Suman and I are leaving this house. You'll are most welcome to come stay with us whenever you like, but we won't live here. I have already sent all our belonging there. I didn't want to create a scene in front of the Tiwaris, hence I didn't announce it then. I'll let them know about this soon" he said
"Shravan? What are you saying?" questioned Suman
"Sumo, we are starting afresh. That will only happen when we are able to get away from all that kept us apart. Are you with me or not?" he asked
"I am always with you" saying this, she held his hand tight. They then, bid their goodbyes and left for their home, for a new beginning.
*End of flashback*
Suman leaned against one of the French windows of their home. She looked around to see all that life had given her. She was blessed, she knew it.
"Never had I thought in the wildest of dreams that I'd have a life like this. A life to share with you, Shravan. I am so thankful to the one above for the day you came into my life. A companion like you is hard to find. You are my everything. Despite the challenges and difficulties, I am grateful for what we have. We are in this journey together, always!" she thought.
She looked out of the window and saw the sun set. A tall silhouette appeared next to her. She looked back and smiled. Shravan and Suman together, watched as the sun set and another beautiful day drew to a close.
