Faded #6

I think it is a matter of love, the more you love a memory, the stronger and stranger it is.

-Vladimir Nabokov

Shravan moved through the motions of his job, mechanically. He had planned to express his findings with the guilty. So sharp at 1 p.m he stood up to reach Captain Tiwari's cabinet and greet her with a lunch surprise. The tiffin, he had dearly enjoyed for so many days, now looked like a dragging burden in his arms. He searched for Suman's cabinet, coming almost for the first time since her joining. He couldn't help but recognize the beautiful scent of her absence, the perfume she has been using for ages. Captain Garima greeted him with a 'Good Afternoon!' but he probably wasn't having any. There was a rush of all the wrong emotions, a strong sense of deviation from his job.

---------

Suman felt that the food, the tiffin-man served would make anybody angry for the rest of the day. No proportion to anything, everything going into extremities, like either it was too salty or too sweet. Astonishing as it might seem, she hadn't noticed it for long, not until she started making food for Shravan. A knock on the door startled her out of her thoughts. 'Come in!' She commanded.

She saw Shravan entering with a similar tiffin box, she filled up every morning. Her eyes went nuts, but then she decided to put on a great acting show.

'Good Morning Sir!' She greeted standing up on her feet. Shravan glared but nodded in a cold yes. His eyes again traveled to the burn of her wrist and the cuts of her fingers.

'Lunchtime Captain!' Shravan cheerily sat across her table while she stood all confused.

'Indeed Major. But you..' She trailed with a question.

'Can't I come?' Shravan smirked.

'No. Of course.' Suman was sure that he has smelled something fishy.

Shravan opened up the content, excitedly arranged the food on Suman's table. Suman's dilemma was touching heights. This was just the most worst-case scenario she had imagined if ever her deeds were caught. Lovely! It had become a reality.

'Eat' Shravan said with a smile. His smile could turn her stomach, but now it was nothing but fear. She could barely guess what came her way.

'Sir. I... I have my lunch. I... I can't..' Suman struggled to find words.

'So do I.' Shravan's voice changed into a breeze of chilling air.

'I seriously don't understand what is going on.' Suman looked down, making circles on the parchment. It felt like waiting for punishment, sooner or later.

'It's your tiffin Captain. You made this food. So figuratively, you shouldn't deter from consuming it, should you?' Shravan stretched in his chair-throwing daggers on her sorry self. 'Captain Tiwari ' he paused and looked at her meek figure as she dearly wanted to run away 'I can see that you are doing everything in your power to get suspended. And me..' he sighed ' I am doing everything in my power to forget and ignore. I have prices to pay, unlike you.' his last line hit Suman like a hurricane.

Before he could walk away Suman gathered all her courage to stop him 'Major!' the helplessness of her voice was clear as a crystal 'Please, not only you but I have prices to pay as well. I don't know if you would be interested to know or not, but I would like to tell you how much I have wronged my best friend in the past. I loved him.' Tears pooled up in her almond eyes. Shravan clenched his jaw before he could intervene, Suman let a sob escape her throat ' The only problem is, that my best friend and of course the man I loved happens to turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to my apologies. He just won't listen. What... What should I do?' She cried, tears falling down her eyes, like a streaming river.

Shravan's furrowed brows evened, he could feel his stomach take a somersault. Something similar happened a few years ago when his lady confessed that she wants to be his. Eerily, this was the same girl, who cried on his indifference. He turned around to see her pinch her nose, she did it often to let herself hold her tears. He felt his inners melt on her sorrow, and so he took steps to reach her side. He forwarded a clean handkerchief from his pocket, letting her take it. She looked at him with her heart beating in her eyes, she was really, really upset with the turn of time. Sharavn stared in her orbes, finding an earnest apology at every corner of it. He turned his eyes away, tearing them off painfully so that he doesn't start mirroring her emotions.
'Captain, he might be helpless. Leave him alone. Maybe it wasn't meant to be.' Suman could feel a mixture of spring and autumn in his voice, the warmth of his proximity.

'I dearly disagree.' She spoke, near his ear. He turned around with swiftness. He rotated his head in a no, trying his best to make her understand. But then he just decided to walk away.

-----------------------

Suman let the food dry and wear out. She won't eat, her stomach was so full of all the things it had basked in. She smiled that her efforts didn't go vain, at least Shravan acknowledged her apology. He won't take it, she knew, she had hurt him more than what was acceptable. The last straw of hope was his own understanding of the situation. She dearly wished that one day he would realise her trauma as well. She had lost her family, she had lost her support system. And now guilt burdens her shoulders as well which she could barely handle alone. She needed him, his love, his apology.

------------

Shravan scratched his pen on files, signing and reading each one of them. A true pain in the butt. His empty stomach was greeted with coffee in regular intervals, but it didn't lessen a throbing pain in his head. He felt his mind wandering towards Captain Tiwari and her nuisances which were out of his evaluation. He prayed that she would get away with this newly found business of hers for her own safety.

--------------

'Vikram' Suman's phone flashed with the name of an old friend, who has risen from forgetful grounds into her ongoing adventure. He had already invited her for 5 luncheons, of which only 2 she could attend. Her Aunt swoons over him, reminding her constantly how much her mother and father might have liked him. Like for marriage. She too had given a thought about their relation, just a month ago, when her life was going pretty straight and hadn't taken a 360-degree turn. Now, situations were different and she barely had time for tomfoolery with Lawyer Vikram Raichand. But still, ethics called out to her, she picked up his call.

'Hey, Captain Tiwari!' Vikram was all enthusiastic about Suman's feeble greet.
'You promised me dinner. I won't listen to a no. Plus, I don't want you to be all alone after all the fatigue from your mission. I have WhatsApped you the location.' He blabbered and Suman paid it half of the attention she would ever gather.
Before her protest, he was ready to shun it, and she sighed but agreed. She would tell him the truth, about her and Shravan, and of course, her changed opinions about him.

In all honesty, Suman loathed the sound of crockery and spoons in all the dinners she has had with Vikram. In her modesty, she shall nod her head, and would half-sleep through his law conversations. He was a jovial guy and she was shocked to see his building interest towards her boring and feeble behavior. She felt sad for him.

------------------

Bassi entered his chamber at 9 and Shravan couldn't spare a glance. 'Oh Come on Shravan!!' Bassi was evidently making plans. He was out of his uniform and was wearing some fancy goggles. Shravan couldn't hold his laugh.

'Joining a circus? I thought you were better here.' he looked through his silvery jacket, his popping gelled hair.

'Oh just shut up. I am here to take you. Here wear them. We will sneak through the back door.' Bassi had plans of an outing.

'No. I am not leaving. I have ..' before Shravan could complete, he could feel a punch coming his way from his mate's side. He escaped it narrowly but then agreed to the fact that he has no choice left.

Every sentence in this story touches my heart. I am loving your characterisation.

And I am loving the trying to be cold Shravan and Traumatized Suman.
