The Gift


Next morning, Tara woke up early as usual.

The dressing table was two to three feet away from the left side of bed, i.e. Mrityunjay's side, inside the walk-in closet. She was drying her hair sitting on the stool kept in front of the dressing table. As she rubbed her wet hair gently with the towel, her bangles made a noise.

Mrityunjay heard this unusual sound and with his half-opened eyes tried to see the source of this sound. His eyes opened wide when he saw Tara, and then he again half closed his eyes and kept looking at the most beautiful lady of his life. In this beautiful morning she was like a fresh breeze.
Tara felt someone watching her and turned to confirm her doubt.

But Mrityunjay was quick, and he closed his eyes before she could see him.

Tara left the room. Mrityunjay was smiling at what he did just now.


Tara offered her prayers at the temple.

"After years this mansion has got back its soul," said Raghu Kaka, seeing Tara offering prayers.

After puja, she went into the kitchen. "Kaka, may I help you?" she asked in a low voice.
"Tara Bahu you don't need to do anything. What do you want? Tell me and I will do that for you," he replied.

"It's my house too Kaka, and I love to cook for my family, although there was no family before, except me and mom." Tara's face was covered with sorrow.
"Ok Bahu. As you say," he smiled.


After sometime, Dadaji came into the kitchen.
"What are you cooking Raghu? It smells like the halwa prepared by Nirmala..." When he entered the kitchen, he stopped seeing Tara cooking. He quietly returned to the dining area.

After fifteen minutes, all were present at the dining table for breakfast.

Seeing the halwa on the table, Mrityunjay's eyes moistened and he murmured, "Mom used to make this."

"It smells delicious." Saying this, Dadaji started eating.

Mrityunjay tasted it. "Yes it is delicious," he said in low voice.

Dadaji was watching Mrityunjay's reaction at this, and seeing Mrityunjay liked it, he said, "Raghu ... Raghu ... come here. You have done a fabulous job."

Raghu Kaka came and was quite confused thinking what he had done. "Sir what did I do?"

"Raghu you made the halwa. It's delicious." He was purposely praising Raghu so that he says Tara's name who was quietly sitting and watching Dadaji's and Mrityunjay's reactions on the halwa.

"Yes Kaka, it's very delicious and after mom it is the first time that I am eating such delicious halwa. Please cook it frequently."

"Yes why not. Tara Bahu will cook whenever you want to eat as she is the one who cooked this delicious halwa." After saying this, Kaka went into the kitchen.

Mrityunjay's spoon was near his mouth to taste the delicious pudding once more but after knowing the cook's name, his mouth was wide open. He was awestruck knowing that Tara cooked this. He was looking at her face, and Tara was smiling seeing his expression.

"Close your mouth son." Dadaji patted Mrityunjay's back.

He immediately closed his mouth and moved his eyes away from Tara.

"Tara Bahu, as this is your first day in the kitchen and according to tradition I have to give you a gift. Take this house's keys. Now it's yours." He handed over the house keys to Tara. "Mrityunjay, now it's your turn. Give Tara a gift."


Hearing Dadaji's order, he was confused what to say as he didn't know about this tradition, so didn't buy anything and now Dadaji was expecting him to gift something.

Seeing Mrityunjay's confused look, Tara diverted the topic, "Dadaji, can I go to meet Mom?"

"Yes sure, why not?" Dadaji caressed her. "Mrityunjay take her to the hospital."

"Dadaji, actually I have made arrangements with the hospital and today, in fact now, I am going to the hospital to bring mom home. I want her to spend her last days with us."

Hearing this, Tara was surprised and didn't believe that her biggest sorrow of separating from her mom in her last days was going to end soon. She would always be with her mom in her last days, and all this was because of the person sitting in front of her.

"Are you sure Mrityunjay? She will be fine here?" Dadaji was quite unsure whether medical arrangements would be sufficient for Tara's mom to be there at home.

"Yes Dadaji, I had talked to the doctor last week and he has arranged all the equipments for her. There will be one nurse for constant observation."
Hearing this, Tara's eyes were filled with tears. "Oh...That day when I saw him with the doctor, he was talking about this."

"If that's the case then go ahead, bring her home. Tara Bahu will get more time to spend with her mom."

Tara's couldn't stop the tears in her eyes anymore; it rolled out of her eyes with a smile on her face. "This is the best gift you are giving me Mrityunjay. You are giving me my mom once again," she thought and whispered, "Thank you."

Mrityunjay read her lips and smiled.
"Tara, you stay at home and tell the servants to clean any room which you think will be suitable for Mom and I am going to the hospital to bring her home." He left saying this.

"Bahu, come I will show you around this mansion." Tara followed Raghu Kaka.

The Shekhawat Mansion was a huge house, with a big hall, dining room, kitchen and four rooms on the ground floor, and four on the first floor and an open terrace.

"This is Dadaji's room and the other three rooms on the ground floor are empty." Then Raghu Kaka took Tara to the first floor. "This, as you know, is your room. That one is Mrityunjay's study, and other two are empty."
Tara was moving towards Mrityunjay's study when Raghu asked, "So which one you would like to be cleaned Bahu?"

She stopped and replied, "I think the third room on the ground floor will be perfect for mom."
"Ok Bahu."


Tara went to the room which was being cleaned for Aradhana. The servant was cleaning the room, and humming the song which played on the radio kept in that room,

~Na kuch poocha na kuch manga
Tune dil se diya jo liya
Na kuch bola na kuch tola
Muskurake diya jo diya
Tu hi dhoop tu hi chaya
Tu hi apna paraya

Tara stopped hearing this song.
"Was that song not for Mrityunjay? He is doing so much for me and mom. Who could have even thought of bringing an ill mother-in-law to their house? He is so kind. I am thankful to God for giving me such a kind friend."

She smiled thinking, when her inner voice questioned her, "Friend...? Only friend?"


She was immersed in her thoughts trying to reply to the question asked by her inner voice, when Raghu Kaka informed her that Mrityunjay had left the hospital with Aradhana and would be here within half an hour.
After exactly thirty minutes, Mrityunjay, along with the team of doctors and medical equipments brought Aradhana home. Within one hour all the equipments were arranged and Aradhana was shifted to her room.



Tara hugged her mom who said, "Don't worry Tara. I am fine and I will be with you and my son, Mrityunjay." Tara wiped her tears.

Mrityunjay sat on the other side of the bed, holding Aradhana's hand and said, "Yes Mom."
After dinner Tara went to be with Aradhana.


Mrityunjay went to his study, took some papers and sat in the balcony. The cold breeze of the night was caressing his tough body when he remembered his yesterday night's most beautiful moment when Tara was standing near the window and the wind was playing with her hair. He started sketching slowly.

When his sketch was completed, he looked at it once and then went to keep it in the table's drawer. While keeping it, his attention went to his previous month's sketch. He took that and found that it was the same face in last month's sketch as the one he had sketched today. He was surprised that he had sketched Tara a month ago. Then he took the other sketches and to his surprise, it was again Tara's sketch. He smiled and kept those sketches inside. His heart was restless, so he took his guitar and started playing slowly.

One by one the days passed. Every morning, the sound of Tara's bangles woke up Mrityunjay. He watches her stealthily every day when she dries her hair. Mrityunjay goes to the office on time and returns home on time. After returning home, most of his time was spent with Aradhana. Dadaji was happy seeing Mrityunjay happy. Tara was taking good care of the house and Dadaji. Dr. Fahim reduced Mrityunjay's medication from a dozen to a few.


One morning when Tara got up and didn't find Mrityunjay on the bed, she got worried. She hastily walked down to Aradhana's room. When she entered the room, she saw Mrityunjay sleeping on the chair near Aradhana.

The nurse came from the back, "Good morning ma'am. I must say you are lucky to have such a caring husband. You mom was awake till late last night. He came and talked to her. They talked for two hours and after that she slept and he also fell asleep here."

She quietly beheld Mrityunjay lost in a trance. When her inner voice asked "Why you are thinking this song Tara?" She immediately moved her eyes away.

By this time Mrityunjay was awake, "Oh...I slept here." They wished each other good morning and then he moved to their room.

Tara quietly sat there pondering on her thoughts for some time and then went to her room.


"Ma'am...Ma'am...Call the doctor. Your mom's condition is deteriorating."

Tara ran to Aradhana's room from the kitchen. She saw Aradhana breathing heavily. The nurse was filling a syringe. Tara called the doctor and Mrityunjay. The doctor reached within thirty minutes after her call, till then the nurse took care of Aradhana and provided her with the necessary treatment.

After the doctor examined Aradhana, he took Tara out of the room. "Tara, I am sorry but your mother doesn't have more than a week or two." She was shell-shocked. Mrityunjay also heard this. He too was shocked, but seeing Tara in tears, he managed himself and reached for her.

He caressed her shoulder and said, "Don't worry Tara. We have two weeks time with her." She wiped her tears.
