MANMARZIYAAN {PART - 1}
A silence of turbulence met her words. The air felt hot and suffocating.
Sam stood in shock barely upright only because of Neil who held her tightly, his face scrunched up in a furious scowl, eyes teary with heavy emotion.
Sam could feel her heart thundering loudly. Sometimes a situation arises where we ourselves are witness to destruction unable to do anything to stop it. That's what she felt like. A huge storm tore her already broken family to seams and she stood a wordless witness.
A storm that had always stood between her parents relationship. A storm that broke of her relationships. A storm that killed her and Radhika's friendship.
A storm called Nandini.
Sam took a shuddering breath as her eyes landed on her mother. The strong, uncaring, independent woman looked pale and weary, her eyes dazed as if she was fighting her own battle in some other land.
Her father. Sam swallowed. He looked angry, aghast, furious and pained at the same time. And yet she couldn't dredge up enough sympathy for him. For however innocent he might be, however psychotic Nandini might be, both were equally responsible.
A shattering of glass broke the blanket of silence. Samrat Khanna stood, fury emboldened and if glares could burn, the beautiful woman in front of him would be in cinders in a few seconds.
"You are a fool Nandini. A fool." His words coated with venom, spew forth claiming the attention of the whole room. "You claim to love me and yet you do not understand the meaning of it. How did you even imagine I loved you? Did I ever tell you that? Did I ever propose you? Hell I only cared for you because you were my dead friend's sister. I cared for you because I promised him to keep you safe and happy. I comforted you when you were down, shared your problems, and even got a house for you to live in comfortably. I gave you gifts to keep you happy, to feel like you still have a family."
"Really now?" Nandini's jewelled eyes flickered in sadistic delight. "Did comforting me also include sharing your problematic marriage troubles with me? Or perhaps, sleeping with me?"
A sharp gasp made Sam look at her mother crumple to her feet. It was like watching a monument glorious and powerful destroyed by a greater power, rendering it useless, dulling its glory.
Sam felt like laughing.
For the greater part of her life spent in odds with her mother, Piyali Khanna's sharp words made Sam dream her destruction. Seeing it happening right in front of her eyes, gave her no happiness. It made her feel nothing. Absolutely nothing.
A glimmer of something gold shifted in her periphery. Her gaze followed and landed on the last witness of this devious ploy.
Her ex-best friend Radhika Mishra.
Sam closed her eyes. How far had they all come!
Radhika, the happy and bubbly sunshine had come to her life and filled it with warmth and happiness. For the first time in her life she was content. Neil and Radhika were the bubbles of warmth, her coldness sucked comfort from.
And then he came along. And with him came the first blizzard of life.
Arjun Mehra.
Handsome, intelligent, seductive, arrogant, manipulative and calculative. He wasn't like anything she had ever faced. Different, mysterious, alien.
And of course being the idiot she was she fell for him.
And having Radhika and Neil with her made her realize how wrong they were for one another. She broke her relationship. She had thought that the chapter named Arjun will forever be closed.
But fate had other plans.
The road trip to Lonavla was the start. The start of a journey. Of love. For both her and Arjun. But not with each other.
Neil her constant support and friend became the centre of her world. His ignoring her and subsequent indifference made her realize how deeply she had hurt him and how deeply she wanted him.
A fairytale romance. The girl fell for her best friend.
But like the characters in books, she wasn't all good girl. Despite slowly accepting her fall for Neil, her attraction towards Arjun couldn't be diminished and this resulted in another trouble. A trouble she shook hands with to destroy her own friend's life.
The Lonavla trip likewise was the start of something for Radhika and Arjun.
Radhika, the sun tamed the harsh, cold moon.
The sunshine fell for the darkness.
And the darkness, unwillingly, fighting all the way responded.
The beauty and the beast fell for each other. The beauty broke the spell and the beast revealed the prince.
And that was what happened.
Radhika brought out facets of Arjun she didn't know existed.
With Sam, Arjun was cool, composed, firm, polite. Perfect.
With Radhika he was fire. Angry, hurt, passionate, emotional and most importantly genuine.
With her he was truth, real, existential. Not like a distant star like Sam saw him.
And Sam had witnessed all these. His soft smiles as he stared at Radhika. His small laughs at her antics. His slow trust on her. And finally love in his eyes for her.
For Radhika. Not for Sam.
She was by then very attached to Neil an on the way to falling in love with him but the jealousy burned her within. The fact that the love she had searched in his eyes for so long was finally there but not for her, ate her inside.
Radhika's betrayal tore her heart to pieces. It was not possible to say which hurt more.
Arjun's love for Radhika or Radhika falling for Arjun
And so resulted her subsequent actions. Ignoring Radhika, taunting her, framing her, making her miserable, became her routine again.
Radhika, her soft hearted friend was bewildered. Her pained gaze would give her sleepless nights. But she was far too gone to care.
However, while Radhika remained oblivious, three people saw her for herself.
Arjun, clearly understood her vindictiveness and became a shield for Radhika. Her efforts to trouble her went in vain for it appeared as if he predicted her every move and had a counter-plan.
Neil saw everything. He hurt terribly at her change but despite his love for her stood firm on his support of Radhika. He warned her again and again. She didn't listen.
And then the third. She came to her life as an answer of every trouble. Jilted by love, yearning for ones who belonged to other, they became good friends. They bonded. Slowly she replaced all he friends with her.
Nandini. Her friend and guide.
What she didn't know was that her very friend yearned for her own father or else this all would have never happened. But she didn't and soon this came out that Nandini was Arjun's sister who didn't approve of Radhika and wanted to separate them.
Somewhere Sam knew she was doing wrong. Oh she was attracted to him, but she didn't want him anymore. She felt cheated by him and felt that by separating Radhika from Arjun, she will give him back the pain and turmoil he gave her, and have her friend back.
Another accomplice joined them. Her ex-colleague Bonnie. Sam despised her but Bonnie wanted Arjun for herself. Everything was win-win solution.
And so the three plotted.
