Will You Be Mine?
"Why aren't you picking up your phone?" I asked annoyed. I threw my phone onto my bed and sat down. That was probably the tenth time that I had called him in the past 15 minutes. It was Valentine's day today and Raghu still hadn't called me. I looked at the clock again. It was 12:30. "Maybe I should just sleep," I said and laid down.
I picked up my phone and looked at it one more time. I smiled on seeing my wallpaper. It was Raghu and I, posing at the beach that we went to last summer. We had so much fun. I sighed seeing that Raghu still hadn't replied to my texts. I put the phone down and hugged my pillow and went to sleep.
I woke up to the sound of my alarm. I sighed and turned it off. I hid my head back in to my pillow, not wanting to get up. "Jaan utho na," I heard someone say. It was Raghu's voice.
My head shot up to find no one there. "Yup, you're crazy, Antara Kaul," I said to myself. I got out of bed and headed to my kitchen.
I lived in a small apartment by myself in downtown, Toronto. Raghu and I had both met at the university of Toronto, where we were both studying business. The two of us had hit off instantly on the first day of class. Later, on everyone's insistence, we had started dating and eventually fell in love. It was our first valentines day together and I thought that Raghu would make it special. So far there was nothing like that.
I set my coffee machine and took bread out of the fridge when the door bell rang. Must be Raghu, I thought and ran to open the door. There was no one there. I was about to close the door when I noticed a tray next to the door. I brought it in.
I picked up the plate and found a single rose along with French toast. My favourite. There was maple syrup on the toast in the shape of a heart. I laughed, how sweet, but who was it from. My eye caught a piece of paper under the plate. I picked it up and read it. A special breakfast for a special girl. There was no name though and it didn't even look like Raghu's handwriting. That was weird, if not Raghu, then who would send it?
I was hiding behind the wall. I saw her pick up the tray and take it inside. I hoped she would like it. It was one of the many surprises that I had planned for her. It was our first Valentine's day together and I wanted to make it very special. I had gotten some random person to write the note for her so she wouldn't be able to tell that it was I.
The day went by quickly, no more surprises. I was getting bored. I didn't have anything to do and Raghu still wouldn't pick up his phone. It was at 5'o clock when the bell rang again. I opened it to find a man. "Yes, how may I help you?" I asked. "This is for you," he said, handing me a bag. I took it from him and thanked him.
I took the bag into my room and opened it to find a gorgeous black dress with red heels and jewlerry. There was another note. Wear this and meet me at Polson Pier. Polson Pier? That was my favourite place! This time it was signed with Raghu's name so I knew it was him for sure. So he didn't forget, I thought. I hurried to get ready.
I stepped out of the house and went down to the parking lot and headed to my car. I stopped in front of my car, surprised at the sight in front of me. There was a bouquet of roses on the windshield. I ran to it and picked it up. I smiled and saw that there was a card attached to it. I opened it and read it. I promised that I love you, but when the 13th rose dies, then I will stop loving you. I looked back at the bouquet. I realized that all of the roses were real except for the middle one. It was made of plastic. The rose would never die, which meant that Raghu would never stop loving me. Tears started to form in my eyes. Was it possible that someone could love you this much? I wiped away the tears and got into my car and headed out.
I was waiting for her in the parking lot eagerly. I saw her car pull up and park right next to mine. I gave her a hug and whispered "Happy valentine's day jaan." "Thank you," she said. "Happy valentine's day to you too." "Missed me today?" I asked. "A lot, you could have at least answered one of my calls. I was getting so worried," she said. "I'm sorry," I said, holding my ears and making a puppy dog face. She smilled and said "It's ok. Now tell me, why did you bring me here?" "For our valentine's day date of course," I replied. "But first..." I opened my car door and picked up a teddy bear that was on the seat. "Will you be mine?" I asked, handing her the bear. "Aww, it's so cute! Of course I will," she replied, giving me another hug. "Now come," I said taking her hand. "But where?" she asked. "You'll see, just come." I opened the door of my car and she sat in.
Raghu pulled up at the drive-in theatre. "Raghu, you really brought me here?" I asked. I loved drive in theatres. "Hey, I know my girlfriend well. I know what she likes and doesn't like," he said. I smiled and got out. I kicked off my heels and with Raghu's help, climbed up onto the car. Raghu came and sat next to me. He lay down against the windshield and I curled up next to him. "By the way, what movie are we watching?" I asked. "Your favourite, The Notebook," he said. "Really? But you don't like that movie," I said. "But you do," he replied. "And I figured I'd give it a chance." "Great," I said and snuggled up closer and waited for the movie to start.
"That wasn't half that bad," I said as the movie finished. "I knew you'd like it. Now it's my turn," she said. "For what?" I asked. "You're not the only one that can plan surprises," she replied. "Get in the car." I sat in the passenger seat and let her drive.
Antara stopped the car in front of a restaurant and said, "Let's go." "You made dinner reservations?" I asked. "Yup, now come on! Let's go!" she said. The two of us walked in and waited for our table. We sat down and had a lovely dinner. Just the two of us.
Raghu and I stepped out of the elevator. "So..." I said. "So..." he repeated. "Thank you for everything," I said. "No, thank you for coming in to my life," he said kissing my hand. I smiled and blushed. Raghu leaned in and gave me a soft kiss on my lips. I looked down after he broke the kiss. "I love you," he said and I ran and unlocked the door. I stepped in and closed it but caught one last look at Raghu's smiling face. I leaned against the door and smiled. I was Raghu's forever and ever and nothing could ever change that.
