Part II RAGHU IGNORED, ANTARA SCARED

It was evening when Raghu entered his house. He had just returned from the office. After keeping his bag in his room, he went towards the balcony where he relaxed for few minutes. Suddenly, his eyes went to the balcony in front of him. Antara! He remembered the conversation between him and Machmach in the morning. Lagta hai Machmach ki help karni padegi! Par kaise? He remembered Machmach's request that he should befriend Antara. Chalo! Yeh bhi theek hai! Machmach ke liye Antara se dosti kar leta hoon. He relaxed for few minutes and then got up. Kyun na main abhi Antara se baat karoon? Start toh kahin se karna padega na! Lets start Mission Miss Call and Machmach. He got up and went downstairs. Soon he was walking towards Antara's house.

Antara sighed as she sat browsing the internet. She was looking for some good recipe. The house was empty as Maama Maami had gone for some shopping while Ishaan had not come with her for this vacation. As her Maami would be too tired to cook after the shopping, Antara had decided to cook something special for the three of them. As she zeroed in on a recipe which looked unique and whose picture also looked tasty, someone rang the doorbell. She looked up at the time; it was nearly 7 PM. Abhi kaun aaya? She shrugged and glanced through the window nearby. As her eyes noticed the person standing in front of the house, they widened. Raghu? Her heart started beating faster, while breath became uneven. She placed her hand right over her heart as if she was trying to calm herself. Yeh Raghu yahaan kya kar raha hai? Aur yeh khud se mujhse baat karne aaya hai? She gulped. She remembered the first time she had met Raghu. She was five and Raghu was ten, when he had saved her from falling down after she had tripped and from that day she had a huge crush on him. When the crush turned into love she did not know. But Raghu always ignored her, as she was too small for him to play with. She was in teens and he was almost adult, when she decided to grab his attention by fighting with him. But nothing worked, he fought with her but never tried to talk to her and come to meet her willingly. Infact, the first time Raghu had come to her house was when she was 13 and he was 18. He had a crush on a girl and wanted Antara to give him ideas on wooing the girl. Of course, the girl had slapped him when he proposed her but still Antara felt fear in her heart. That was the first time and last time he had come to her house willingly to meet her. And today he had come to meet her again. She felt tears well up in her eyes. Kahin koi ladki toh pasand nahi aagayi Raghu ko? Agar aisa hua toh main apne aapko kabhi sambhaal nahi paaungi! She closed her eyes willing her eyes to stop tearing up. Nahi! Main is baar uski madat nahi karoongi! Forget about it! Par ab is Raghu ka kya karoon jo darwaaze pe aakar khada hai? Mujhe use baat nahi karna hai! I have to avoid him! She nodded her head in determination and turned towards the door. She opened it and looked at Raghu.

Raghu looked around waiting for Antara to open the door. When was the last time he came here without being invited? He scratched his head while thinking. Ah yes! When he had planned to propose a girl from his college. What was the name of that girl? He thought for few minutes and then shrugged. He forgot the girl, it seems. He was about to ring the bell again when the door opened and there stood Antara. He hoped she would not start fighting with him again. He was not here to fight. He was here for Machmach, his best friend. "Kya hai?", Antara's rude voice brought him out of his thoughts. He wanted to smash his head somewhere. How was he to befriend her and ask her about Machmach when she is so rude with him? He shook his head and spoke up, "Woh tere se baat karna ka hai!"

Antara felt her heart hammer in fear. Jis baat ka darr tha wahi hua! Jaroor koi ladki ki baat hai! Mujhe ise yahaan se waapas bhejna hoga! She shrugged, "Abhi time nahi hai!", she said in an impatient voice. Raghu frowned, "Abhi time nahi hai? Time kaise nahi hai tereko? Na tereko College hai na Job? Toh tereko abhi kya kaam hai? Ghar par toh khaali baithi hai. Ab tereko kya kaam hai?" "Woh ...woh...", Antara stuttered unsure what to reply when her eyes reached the broom leaning by the door. She took the broom and shoved it in front of Raghu. Raghu took a step back in fear. Abhi kya yeh mereko jhaadu se maaregi? Antara piped up, "Mujhe jhaadu maarna hai ghar mein!" She winced internally at the lie. Her Maami had already sweeped the whole house in the morning. But how was Raghu to know that? Raghu nodded, "Theek hai! Tu kaam karle. Main baad mein aata hai!" He turned and walked away. Antara heaved a sigh of relief. Thank you, Bappa! She thought as she looked up. Due to hanging around Aaji, Antara had also got into habit of talking to Bappa. She closed the door and walked towards her laptop.

Raghu roamed the roads for half hour after which he turned towards Antara's house. Ab tak toh jhaadu maar chuki hogi, nai? He rang the door bell and waited. Antara looked through the window and again got a shock. Ek din mein do baar Raghu mere ghar pe! Ladki ka maamla serious hoga! Ab mein kya karoon Bappa? Suddenly, she got an idea and opened the door. "Kya hai?", she spoke in a rude voice again while frowning at him. Raghu spoke, "Woh tera jhaadu ho gaya toh baat..." Antara cut him off with an angry, "Jhaadu kiya toh kaam hogaya kya? Pocha nahi maarna hai kya?" Raghu stuttered, shocked by her anger, "Fffir main baad mmmein aata hun!" He walked away and she closed the door.

Raghu decided to walk to his home when he stopped. Nahi! Maine Machmach ka madat karne ka faisla liya hai! Us kaam ka aaj main shuruvaat karkeich rahega! He nodded and sat by the nukkad waiting for another half hour to pass.

It was nearing 8 PM and Antara decided to start cooking for the night. As she started cutting the vegetables, the bell rang again. Ab kaun? Maama Maami toh nau baje aane waale the! She shrugged and looked through the window. Yeh phirse? Hey Bhagwaan! There stood Raghu in front of her house. She slapped her forehead. Ab iska main kya karoon? Suddenly, she felt anger burst through her. Already he was giving her pain by ignoring her love and now he was here to hurt her more. She pulled the door open and glared at him with such an anger that Raghu gulped in fear. "Woh...main!", Raghu stuttered and Antara's glare intensified. "Dekho Raghu!", Antara spoke in anger and Raghu took a step back, "Mujhe abhi khaana banana hai! Agar tumhein samajh nahi aa raha toh main bata doon that I am busy! So please phir se yahaan mat aana!" Raghu spoke up, "Toh phir main kal..." The door slammed right on his face.

Raghu walked away miserably when he turned and looked at the house in puzzlement. Yeh Miss Call mere ko ignore kyun kar rahi hai? Aaj tak kabhi aisa nahi kiya! Bhale hi woh ladti hai jhagadti hai par kabhi ignore nahi karti! Yeh Antara ko kya hogayela hai? He scratched his head.

It was night and Raghu was lying on the cot in the balcony looking at the sky. He was thinking about Antara. Why was she ignoring him? Kahi kuch musibat mein toh nahi? He shook his head. Kuch problem hota toh Aaji ko jaroor bataati! He sighed as he remembered the sweet five year old Antara. How sweet she was and how rude the Antara from today is! Hamesha pyaar se baat karti thi woh Antara, aur ise dekho kitni rude thi aaj! He did not know what changed her from the sweet girl to the arguing teen. He shrugged. Mujhe kya? Mujhe sirf Machmach ke problem se matlab! Antara se nahi! As he thought about his office work, his eyes reached the balcony of Antara's house and he sat up with a jerk. There stood Antara singing softly lost in her thoughts. Raghu stood up and walked closer. He heard her humming a tune and he smiled softly. She looked so cute while concentrating! Raghu thought.

He did not know how long he stood there smiling at Antara. Suddenly, he was brought out of his thoughts by Aaji hollering his name. He turned and ran away towards his Aaji.

Antara was lost in her music when she felt someone staring at her from Raghu's balcony's direction. She felt her heart beat build up in anticipation. She turned to look at Raghu's balcony but no one was there. She sighed sadly. Bas kar Antara! Bas hogaya! Ab Raghu ke naam ka maala japna band karde! Woh kabhi tera nahi hoga! Ab ummeed lagaana chod de! Bas bahut hogaya! Antara nodded her head in determination. Main Raghu ko apne dil se nikaalkar hi rahungi! Aur iske liye mujhe Raghu ko face karna hi hoga! Yeh sachchai face karni hi hogi ki woh mera nahi hai! Aur na kabhi hoga! She took a deep breath. Kal main Raghu se miloongi aur uski madat karoongi! And I will try to get over him and do my best to move on. Antara walked away towards her room.
