Hi All,
Thank you for your comments. I sometimes feel so sad at how the CVs treat Sandy's character. Not only that, they have made every character in this serial very despicable. I understand it is a fiction and no point brooding over it. I also believe in traditions and am not saying that they are bad. All I am saying that devotion, spirituality, is in people's heart, and fasting should not be a criterion for judging a person. To me that is superstition. Okay, someone mistakenly forgot a tradition. So what! Mistakes happen, and it is the duty of elders to explain the mistake and help that person to overcome it in the future and move on. Why should that person be made to fell so guilty over this mistake (considering this mistake did not cause harm to anybody). Anyways, I do not agree with the trash the CVs show sometimes, so I guess I should take a break from the show as some of you advised. Somehow I like Sandy's character and identify modern girls with progressive thinking with her. So it hurts to see an entire community standing there and ridiculing her for one mistake. Here are my comments to your posts:
I don't know about current Rajasthani culture. They are shown as traditional in the media but the land of historically brave, fearless and magnanimous people can't be this mean spirited in my opinion. - Deebz
Completely agree. That is why I told CVs to stop showing this stupidity. The way they have degraded a mother's character, and all other characters is a shame.
In fact if you are generalizing few fictitious characters and forming an opinion about a whole state, you are either too naive or you are emotionally over reacting. -Deepika_bigfan
I am neither nave nor trying to generalize. This is exactly my point to the CVs. In fact what you are saying, applies to the CVs. Why cannot they show one or two good characters that will give support to Sandy and Suraj? Are they portraying that community correctly? Rathi family could be mean and narrow-minded. But did Daisa's family have to be equally bad? They killed Sandy's parents and disappeared her brother and BIL, so there is no support for her. There should be a balance in what they are showing. In every family there is good and bad, so they should try to portray that. You may be educated enough not to generalize a community with a serial, but his show may be watched by people who are not so well-educated or knowledgeable about other communities. This paints a very wrong picture for them.
I am giving examples which may sound irrelevant, because frankly I do not know the importance of fasting in a vrat. I fast many times during Shiv-ratri and I feel definitely more alert and aware of my hunger and learn how to overcome it.
I am not trying to justify "superstitions" - I am only saying try to search for a exaplanation before striking them off as superstitions. The traditions are part of our social evolution - many of them keep changing and many of them are relevant to modern society. -Deepika_bigfan
I am not saying do not follow traditions, neither I am saying traditions are superstitions. But if someone is unable to follow traditions for whatever reason, that does not mean that that person is responsible for his/her partner's misfortune. Now that is superstition according to me, connecting someone's action with another family member. I have fasted many times during Pujas and also forgotten to fast sometimes, and sometimes unable to do it because of work related travel. I come from an open community where people openly admit forgetting to fast or not doing it every year. People work at offices, travel, have exams, so it is not always possible to follow traditions by the book. Many times I have told my friends and mom that I forgot to fast. In return, I have always heard, so what, no big deal! If you have devotion in your heart, that is what matters. But to be discussed in a big gathering in front of everyone, and mocked about it, seems very heartless to me. It is ok for Sandy to feel guilty, but the elders should try to console her and make her feel not guilty. The elders should also reprimand Meenakshi for talking nonsense. Pushkar does not seem to be an uneducated rural area or village. DILs wera maxis, young girls work in beauty salons, men use laptops. It is ridiculous for CVs to show that each and every member of this community is a narrowminded fool.
I am sorry to say but I have stopped watching the show since last 2 weeks. I can't watch this crap. - devica:
You have done the right thing. I keep waiting for IPS track but all I get is Bhabo and her crap track.
So what modernization in thought process are we talking about...Girl child is killed at birth or aborted, brides are burnt, lovers are killed, DILS are tortured and girls are raped...I did not find anything odd in the entire episode. The fact that Sandhya is feeling so heart broken goes to show she believes in that tradition and feels distressed she forgot to fast. However, I definitely do not approve of their attempts to show an intelligent girl like Sandhya in that light. That I accept is a major flaw in the script. - UMDU
Yes, I agree with those things happening, but does not Star Plus boast of changing that ?Rishta Wohi Soch Nayi" ? Where is the "Nayi Soch" ? They should not have shown Sandy to be crying. She should have told the truth and stayed away from the Puja. Instead she should have looked up a recipe and cooked a great meal for Suraj. She should have made up to her hubby this way. But channel shows Sandy crying, Bhabo and Meena blabbering nonsense and Bhabasa is a mute spectator.
How can we ever reach equality when fasts like this are glorified in this manner? They signify that the husband is superior in a marriage.
And I frankly feel now that Sandhya is not fit to be an IPS officer. Police officers need more than intelligence, they need the ability to stand up for themselves as well. - ambodidi
Completely agree. Fasting is a personal belief/tradition. No one has the right to dictate it. Why making a big deal about it? And Yes, you are absolutely right, this is actually promoting discrimination. I did not look at that angle. I agree, in real life Sandy would be totally misfit for an IPS officer.
I would also like to add , that its just a serial one track goes another comes..we shoudnt take it all very seriously - Sonali_11:
I agree. But the Forum is also a place to discuss issues and interpret them, and that is what we are doing.
its not real life, so you can stop watching it whenever it makes you feel sad. just an idea, please dont mind. - fresco
That's a good advice, I think I will take it.
What I meant was a girl as intelligent as Sandhya who can get a clue from small small things is shown forgetting something like this is surprising to my mind. Teej is a major festival and the atmosphere is full of festivity with mehnidiwalas sitting on street corners...shops having more crowd then usual...it is difficult to miss something like that is what I implied. I do believe in following traditions myself. At the end of the day the world is not equal no matter how much we cry from roof tops...the fact that a girl changes her Surname after marriage instead of the boy is a small example to prove the point. Fasts are only one aspect of discrimination. Things are changing but overnight it cannot happen. After all the land of freedom and equality, the US has never had a female president since its independence. So to expect a country like India to change is asking for the moon - UMDU
UMDU I agree with you but small changes are also taking place right? More girls are pursuing advanced degrees, more women are pursuing careers , we even see some great women CEOs, girls are also in army, they are pilots, they have climbed the Everest, travelled to Antarctica, went on spaceships. This has nothing to do with traditions. We can follow traditions but not be blinded by it. Sandy did a lot of important work that day; filled out UPSC forms, stood in line, went to Chhotu's school for meeting; I remember that a couple of times I had decided to fast on certain occasions, but forgot in the midst of multiple chores. I felt bad, but decided that next time I have to be more careful; in fact I made up by fasting on two other occasions which I would normally not do. My point is mistakes happen, but why are the elders and others in this community so unforgiving? I am pretty sure CVs are painting a wrong picture of this community.
This was the same girl who solves meenakshi burning storeroom case, terrorist case and fake baba case with small small hints. So sad that CVs are changing every character in a negative way. - jhema
Yes, CVs have made her character totally inconsistent.
I like to catch her when she's being all brave and fearless in the midst of all this chaos. But this pursuit of the Sandy I liked is a hit and miss business these days - Paddy
Paddy, we are watching this show over two years just for that - to watch and support a bravee and fearless girl. But when CVs make her cry for useless stuff, and make her obsessed, silly, forgetful, messy, the Sandy of our dreams get lost. And that is what has happened now.
Anuji ,Confessing her mistake infront of the family and neighbourhood is the only best thing we have seen from sandy from this track. One should be bold to accept the mistake infront of everyone,She has that courage to do it. and also as she beleives these traditions from her heart, she feels guilty for her mistake. - Jhema
Hema, she should be commended for her honesty and courage. Instead here we see CVs making her cry, making her feel guilty. And the whole community is mute spectator to Meena's bakwas.
Then Hema, this proves that Bhabo is not good for Sandy's mental health. But we all know that Sandy will not leave Bhabo. So I don't know where this story is going, but whenever Deepika looks lovely (all the time) and Sandy has some sanity (once in a while) I'll watch I think - Paddy
Paddy, story is not going anywhere. Meena should be in jail and Bhabo should be living a lonely miserable life. But this show belongs to them, so we will have to bank on our lovely Deepika's looks and sane Sandy actions for entertainment.
@Sandy... why you always cry?? Cv's give all tensions, all boo boo faces to her. why? kal wo itni achi lag rahi thi but once shez not smile why dont they give cry and tension faces to meena, chavi and emily ?? This is full torture! - Mariaaly
I so agree with you!
