Vayuu, the bow given to Rama by Agastya was not the Saranga - although the name 'Kodanda' doesn't appear in Valmiki.

It was saranga bro and kodanda means bow,let me give you an example in sundarkand their is a chaupayi Har kodand kathin jehi bhnja, tehi samait mad nrap dal gnja, char dushan trisira aru Vaali ,badhe sakal atulit balsali(it's in ramcharit manas)I have ramcharit manas as well as valimiki Ramayana as well as Anand Ramayana along with 18 Puranas and few uppuranas with me ,so yes it was sharanga, along with which an celestial arrow was given to Rama and khadaga think it was kaaljayi of lord shiva was given to lakshmana, with which he slayed son of srupnakha.

Look it certainly can't be ajgava coz it was with parshuram, lord Vishnu gave agastya rishi his famous bow,so if it's not ajgava it has to be sharanga, coz these are the only two bow of narayana that are mentioned in puranas and uppuranas, the four famous khadaga I have heard is ,nandak of lord Vishnu and kaaljayi, chandrahaas and ratanmaru of lord shiva, kaaljayi for lakshman, chndrahaas for Ravana and ratanmaru for lord Kalki .

Actually no,everything you said is right except the part where lord shiva and Vishnu fighta nd hmm sound,in case you don't know the two bows of lord shiva are pinaka and vijay and two bows of lord Vishnu are sharang and ajagava, lord shiva killed three sons of tarak with pinak, that's why he is also called pinakdhrik,he however handed this bow to parshuram and told him, that their are only two people who are good enough to keep this dhanush,Vishnu bhakt devvrat and Ravana ,whomsoever you find suitable handover this bow to him,so at first he visited Lanka to test Ravana, their he saw Ravana humiliating rishi's,so at that very moment he decided to hand this dhanush to king devrat, the vijay bow was also given to him by lord shiva, which he gave to karna along with bhargavastra in regret of cursing him, lord Indra in brahaman form took both along with kavacha and kundala, other story is right, along with it the famous sharanga bow was first given to lord Rama by sage agastaya,it was also the bow of Shri krishna.

Vayuu1,

I have quoted from Valmiki Ramayana [Bala Kanda, Sarga 75]. What is your source?

This is what is mentioned in verse 20 of Sarga 75- "The great Rudra handed the bow and the arrow to the Raja Rishi of Videha Devaraat." Parashurama says this line.

Then he shows the bow in his hand and says (verse 21) "This is the bow of Vishnu (capable of great conquests) and Vishnu himself handed it over to the best among Bhrigus Sage Richika, as a matter of trust."

"Then the great sage Richika handed it over to my father the great Jamadagni" (verse 22)

Then in verse 27, Parashurama asks Rama to wield the Vishnu Bow, which, he (Parashurama) repeats, has come to him through his father and grandfather.

The story that you mentioned does not feature in Valmiki Ramayanam at least.

"Sharanga" is associated with Narayan / Krishna- not with Rama.

If you were to go by Mahabharata, Agni presents the Sudarshana and the Sharanga bow to Krishna just before the burning of the Khadavaprastha forest. He says that the bow was made by Vishwakarma but if its previous owner had been the illustrious Rama, surely that would have been mentioned too.

No, Rama's bow was entirely different- the one presented to him by Sage Agastya. But now am curious to know- how did it get the name 'Kodanda'? Where is it first mentioned?

Breaking the Shiva Bow was the condition set down by Janaka.

Parashurama asks Rama to prove his abilities by holding the Vishnu Bow erect and pulling the string up to his ear. Sharena eva purayasva - With an arrow, pull it (the string) Verse 3, Sarga 75

No one asked Rama to break the Vishnu bow- so he didn't.

Uh, no, Sarg 66 clearly has Janak asking Rama to just string the bow, not break it.

26b, c yadi = if; asya dhanuSaH = that, of bow; raamaH = Rama; kuryaat aaropaNam = does [strings,] bowstring; mune = oh, sage; sutaam a yoni jaam siitaam = daughter, non-, uterine, birthed, Seetha; dadyaam = I offer; daasharatheH = to Dasharatha's [son];aham = I will.
"If Rama strings the bowstring of that bow, oh, sage, I will offer my daughter, whose birth is non-uterine, to Dasharatha's Rama..." [So said Janaka to Vishvamitra.] [1-66-26b, c]

Parashurama didn't ask Rama to do anything different from what Janaka asked him.

Another thing interesting is that in Sarg 66, Janak tells Vishwamitra that the bow was originally used by Rudra to disrupt Daksha's yagna. But in Sarg 75, it's mentioned that it was used to destroy Tripura.

Shouldn't Mahadev have a range of bows, and not just one or 2, just like cricketers have several bats? 😆 Why use the same bow that was used against Daksha on Tripura? He should have used a different one 😆

A different question - is there any mention of Mahadev having a Vijaya bow that went to Karna via Parashurama? In any texts?

Forget a range of bows, Shiva appears to have had only one- the one that was used in the Daksha Yagna and the same one which was used against Tripurasura and ultimately which became immobile, thanks to Vishnu.

Regarding Parashurama receiving the Vijaya Bow and passing on to Karna- only Vayuu1 can answer where he / she got that story from
