Chapter 4 - A shattered dream

The phone beeped, making his thoughts shatter, it was already morning and he had dozed off in his chair, glancing at the name flashing on the screen he stretched up and yawned.

"What is it" He snapped at the caller, in his sarcastic cold voice.

There was a moment of silence in which he kept listening, his brows linking with each other. "Alright, we'll see it tonight" He promised after a moment. "I want it at any rate!"

The phone disconnected.

"Dada!" It was Unnati, and if he recognized it right there was a note of fear in her voice. He opened the door still yawning, god, the night was disastrous!

"Yeah choti?"

Unnati took a moment to answer and then she said,

"There's someone to meet you"

And that someone was already talking to his father, whom he didn't know had returned till now. The sound of their laughter reached his ears as he made his way downstairs.

"That was funny" Giriraj said choking a little, and the little laughter that came in response was a very familiar one, what was she doing here? He made a mental note as he saw the soft brown waves of hair, and the gleam of glass bangles.

He stood there frozen for a moment her smile still had that effect on him, her rosy cheeks glowed as she turned to look at his with eyes pondering his face. She had something in her mind and that, was evident.

"Join us Uday beta" Giriraj said,

"She's been waiting for you for hours now."

"Oh why so" He asked coldly making his way to sit with them, and Manyata's eyes narrowed at his so civil response.

"Keep talking I'll be back"

Oh! Giriraj knows the devilish art of fixing people.

"So princess" He said turning to her. "Why the sudden urge to see me?"

Manyata took a moment to ponder her answer and then said,

"I came in with an invitation"

"Oh" Uday raised his eyebrows. "So the royals of devgar finally remember us how nice"

"Don't you just'"

"Don't I just what?" He snapped back. "I won't trust you ever again princess"

"That's too good" She retorted. "Don't trust me I don't want you to either"

She stood up to leave. "Stop insulting my family"

"That's not my fault now is it?" He asked standing up, his eyes burning in to hers for a moment, "If their daughter keeps running around with someone else while she's so called fianc of mine, the family would be disgraced now wouldn't it?"

She gasped at him,

"You did it?"

He looked calmly back in to her eyes nodding,

"Yes, I did it"

There was a look of surprise in her eyes that he didn't like, "I told the media that you were dating someone in London I am the source of that so called rumor" he said circling her.

"Sorry princess if I shattered that angle image of yours in front of the media"

Yet she said nothing,

"Poor dadi sahib, she must have had a very bad time wrapping up the stories, I feel so sorry for her, what is her fault to have such a fool for a granddaughter" His voice was as cold and as slow as a striking blade.

"You were right" She said slowly. "I was a fool! I was a fool to love you!"

That was the blow that cracked his composure. He grabbed her shoulders pinning her against the wall, still keeping an iron hold on her wrists, her bangles made a painful sound of shattering as they cracked due to his touch.

"Don't you dare say you loved me" His voice was husky as his eyes burned hers again, she blinked fighting the tears of pain, both physical and mental.

"You're hurting me" She whispered softly in a voice that melted away with his warm breath, "Please"

"I intend to" He said shortly. "I want to hurt you until you realize what pain is"

She struggled against his hold and he pressed his body to hers making her completely trapped between the wall and him, and making her unable to move an inch of her body,

"What did you thought that you'll play with my heart and leave it at that?" She closed her eyes unable to stare at the fire in his anymore; yes she deserved to be hated but not to be squashed like this.

"Did you think that you'll play a witty sweet game with some random boy, come back home and get married to a yuvraj? How funny!"

His laughter was as cold as his voice, she tried hard to fight them off but the tears kept burning her eyes,

"Then for your kind information, I won't marry such a girl who doesn't have an ounce of self respect left for her!"

This completely shattered her, yes she was expecting hatred, she was expecting harsh words, but she wasn't expecting this, not at all!

She cried, cried forgetting the situation she was in, forgetting the arms that soothed her belong to the person who hated her the most in this world, she cried, letting the tears that wrapped months of pain, and months of hesitation flow she cried, like the old Monya sometimes did, letting the whole world just go to hell in front of her.

He was taken aback by her sudden act that his hold on her wrists relaxed, tiny drops of blood drained from her wrists to his shoulders as she hugged him, still crying like some old self he remembered. And the broken pieces of those poor bangles hit the floor making a musical cry along with her sobs.

Her hair smelled sweet as he ran his fingers through them, making his more and more puzzled by her existence. Who was she? It was hard to work out, the princess he hated? Or the girl he loved? Or someone totally different, someone who was able to tame the flames inside him, someone who was a soothe a comfort to him in a way he had never realized before, letting his heart rule over his mind for a moment and his emotions to blind his logic,

He planted a soft kiss on her cheek, brushing away the tears with his lips, she looked up her eyes filled with wonder and confusion it took her a minute to ponder things and then she ran away, ran away pushing the hardest she could. He watched her hair dancing behind her as she gathered speed.

The lights called in the night, which came creeping inside; Manyata glanced nervously at the entrance for the hundredth time trying to keep her poise and control over her heart,

Will he come? She kept wondering as the invitees arrived one by one, it was her party, damn it, and she was the one sulking in a corner.

"Hey Manyata" She looked up at the voice that made her jump; it was Jagat the one she had almost forgotten.

"Oh" She sighed. "It's you"

"Yeah after a long time" They shook hands, she liked the friendly gleam in Jagat's eyes and remembered the intense glow in Uday's, she gulped, this surly wasn't the moment to think about him.

"Had a hard time these days didn't you?" Jagat's friendly voice broke her trance, "That you didn't even call all the old friends once"

"Yeah" Manyata nodded, how easy it was to carry out a conversation without really paying attention to what was being said, "After all the mouth watering rumors" She laughed and Jagat raised his eyebrows,

"So they were rumors" He asked casually.

"Hmm" Manyata said and her eyes lingered on the gathering people for a moment, "Some of it"

"I'm glad" She wondered why though,

"Well enough of me what about you" She asked, "Still enslaved by your dad or what?"

"Hmm" Jagat imitated her response a moment ago, "He can't think how his work would go through without me now"

"That's a good thing"

Jagat raised his eyebrows again,

"Do you think so?" He asked.

"Any girl would" Manyata answered.

"That's interesting" Jagat agreed,

"So should I take it as.." Manyata asked glad at the fact that her childhood friend was back, "The great Jagat Singh Ratodh is still single"

"What to do, you weren't there na?" They laughed at the childish remark he had made and suddenly a chill swept over her veins,

Uday's eyes board in to hers for a moment and then his gaze swept slowly over to Jagat, who started back at him coldly. It was general knowledge that they both detest each other to the very core of their hearts since their childhood,suddenly an idea hit her.

UPDATING...

"Jagat would you help me with something?" She asked slowly, watching Uday talking to DS.

"Yeah what?" Jagat asked her his eyes too fixed on their enemy.

"To settle some balance"

"If it's something that involves Uday don't.." It was Jay who just appeared,

"Oh come on J" Jagat said turning his attention to her, "Hurting someone a little isn't a crime now is it?"

"It'll be pity if I had to attend your funeral tomorrow Jagat" Jay gave him a retorting answer.

"Is he that possessive?" Jagat inquired politely and Manyata sighed,

"Let's find out shall we?"

Jay mouthed a begging no as they made their way towards the dance floor.

"What is it Nandu bhai you look terrible" Vijay asked tapping her on the shoulder,

"What to do Vijay bhai I've got a fool for a sister"

"ooo what has she done now?"

"She's going to poke the eye of a sleeping dragon"

"Now now Nandu bhai, we won't let her be burned until we're here will we?"

Jay turned to him her eyebrows raised,

"What do you mean?"

"I mean" Vijay bhai said slowly, "It's time to rock and roll"

They exchanged a look that if Manyata had seen she would've certainly reconsidered her idea of dancing.

The lights went off suddenly, Manyata couldn't find Jagat in the crowd anymore, inside her mind she cursed Jay for doing something stupid as she knew only Jay was capable of doing such things,

"Don't worry my dear friends…" A voice said as she tried to moved through the crowd, it was Vijay bhai, if he was saying not to worry there certainly was a reason to worry she made a mental note.

"We're planning a new game now, just to bring life to the party" It was Jay.

"Now as you can hardly find each other, please stay calm and listen," At that the whispers and the hustle bustle in the darkness stopped.

"What now?" Someone asked.

"Well the game is simple." Jay said and one spot light hit her face, she smiled at the crowd watching in darkness.

"And it's called grab and dance" Vijay helped her.

"What?" Some people asked.

"Well as this is a ball you've already got your masks," Jay continued briskly, "Wear them and grab the first hand you can reach and dance with him or her, we'll judge who the best duo is in dancing as you could be dancing with a complete stranger…got it?"

"Sounds interesting" Someone said in her ear she jumped and looked back, in darkness she couldn't see much, just the outline of a familiar mask, she sighed it was Jagat.

"Where were you?" She whispered back. "I thought you forgot the deal"

"Well no" He answered. "A deal is a deal"

She missed the last few lines Jay had said in this conversation and the music had already started.

He did what Jay had asked them to do, grabbing hold of her hand he lead her to the dance floor, they were dancing to the soft music that played, dancing like strangers among strangers, there was something wrong her mind told her, in moments Jay too joined them accompanied by someone who she couldn't recognize,

The tune changed in to a faster beat, his fingers slid to her waist pulling her more closer to him,

"There's no need to over act" She told him coldly.

"But the deal was to provoke someone wasn't it" He asked leaning in, his nose almost touched hers, she could sense the danger, her heart was beating wildly, Jagat was never successful in making her feel so helpless…

She missed a step as she was so lost in her thoughts, it made her lose her balance, his hold kept her steady and his fingers ran through her bare back taking the advantage of that backless dress she wore. That single spot light of Jay hit them for a moment and she recognized the familiar intense gaze of those dark brown eyes. She hadn't realized how tight that hold on her was until that moment, it was Uday, who had grabbed her…

"So princess" He asked softly. "You were trying to provoke me?"

The soft light that lit up the dance floor now had made his face glow; she couldn't lift her gaze up at him.

steeling his hand from her waist he traced a line down from her shoulder to her arm, feeling her skin with his finger tips making her shiver under his ruthless gaze that peered in to her heart,

"Do you know what I do when I get provoked?"

They turned back in to the darkness, she sighed, he couldn't see her cheeks getting redder and she couldn't see his eyes peering in to her soul,

He bent down his lips slowly touching her earlobe as he whispered in to her ear,

"Things that are mine should stay mine princess" She closed her eyes as his lips travelled from her cheek to her chin, "Or else I know how to keep them sealed"

"You can't imprison me" She whispered back in a cold voice, "I'm not yours as you seem to think!"

He watched her expression as they rotated from light to darkness again, his lips travelled over her cheeks once again,

"Can't I?"" He asked softly, "We'll see" He pushed her softly away from the crowd that kept dancing, still keeping a tight hold on her, more and more in to the darkness that burned her eyes, the blackness swallowed them whole as he pinned her to the wall.

The music and the lights were distant now,

"You're scared" He whispered caressing her cheek, "Not as brave as you seem to be huh princess?"

"I'm not scared" She said in a clear voice, a door closed somewhere ahead, His fingers ran through her back again,

"But your heart is" He said, "I can feel it" Of cause he could, his body was pressed against hers, why wouldn't he feel that heart which was beating the wildest it could.

"I…"She searched around for words. "I'm…"

"Shhh" His fingers covered her lips, and he was kissing her neck, her shoulders, his lips travelling all over her, she felt her weak heart completely giving in as she clutched in to his collar for support, he let go of her suddenly,

"I can even control your dreams princess…you won't sleep tonight" The way he said it she knew he was right, he left, his footsteps echoing in the empty hall and she stood there still pinned against the wall.
